I think Tone pitches the first game for Cortland, Kelley for Plattsburgh, Maxwell for Brockport and Juedes for Oneonta!
You have to go with your #1 guy on day 1 in a Double elim format! The losers bracket will be no fun for any team except Cortland who just keeps rolling out quality pitcher after quality pitcher!

Lets face it, Cortland is the only team that stands a chance if they lose in the 1st round.

I agree with Mahvin, this is as deep/diverse a Cortland team that I have ever seen!

Having said that, Cortland is beatable like always with an outstanding pitching performance, some timely hitting and a few bounces!
Should be an outstanding Tournament, I hope the weather gets better!

adversity

I have attended many SUNYAC games this year and it is no surprise that Cortland is once again favored to win the torunament.  Their line up top to bottom is impressive and pitching around any one of them is no option as they all have the ability to hit one out of the park (23 HR as a team).  Once on the base paths do not look for Cortland to slow down as they steal their way to a win with great team speed (Especially K. Dimino).

That being said, I am also impressed with the pitching staff that Brockport has put together towards the end of the season.  Shannon, Mascari and Maxwell are all quality pitchers who have been in pressure games before.  Freshman Steve Locke and Kris Getzke have stepped up as well combining for a record of 7-1.  All have been shown to go deep into games, as is needed as the bullpen has struggled.  Seniors Matt Beach and Dan Ferraro have been the main go to guys and both have had quality outings, along with some poor performances.

I plan to be in Cortland to watch the entire tournament and I look forward to seeing some very quality baseball.  It would be great to see someone other than Cortland win the tournament and represent the conference in regionals as Cortland has proven they belong there with or without a tournament win.

Hey adversity, I bet you didn't know your email address is on your account and judging from that e-mail address you are either Matt Beach or its a heck of a coincidence.
"I have attended many SUNYAC games this year" I hope so, you played in 14 of them!

Matt, I would concentrate on the games this weekend and leave the d3baseball.com to the washed up guys. Go get some extra BP or defensive work!
Good luck this weekend kinda, I played for Cortland 93-95!

Who will pitch for each team is going to be very interesting... as there are options on each staff.  Does anyone think that who has pitched against a team already play into the decision a coach will make?

And while Cortland has to be the favorite going in based on the undefeated conference record and high national ranking... I think it is wide open as one game by a pitcher or two (good or bad) can change the dynamic of what happens.

There has been a lot of talk about the Cortland pitching... but looking at the conference statistics I have a question about the outfielders and the eventual All-Conference team selections.  This is probably answered best by one of the conference SID's... and I know that Fran does read this, so if he isn't already at one of the weekend venues, perhaps he can chime in to clarify...  My question is: Are there any minimum standards for the All-conference selections?  Games played/started, AB's per game, etc...  And then are the defensive stats/ability taken into consideration?  As they aren't listed on the conference only stats...

The reason I ask is Cortland has started 7 different outfielders in the conference games... with only two of them starting more then half the conference games... Only Mike Avery (11 starts, .308 in 39AB's – that is lowest BAvg. among the Cortland outfielders in conference games, with 2 - 2B, 1 - 3B and 3 RBI's) and Anthony Coromato (8 starts, .417 in only 24 AB's, 1 - 2B, 1 - HR, and 8 RBI's) have started in more then half the conference games.

Anyone have any thoughts on who the AC outfielders may be?

I think one of them has to be Dan Randle from Oneonta... .396 BA, (5 2B, 1 HR & 9 RBI and a.563 slug pct, and .434 OB pct...  but other then that I have no idea.  Especially if there are qualifying minimums to take into consideration!

Cortland 7 Cazenovia 3

Cortland has won 29-straight games. There may be a rematch in the NCAA Tournament believe it or not. Cazenovia hosts this weekend's NEAC tournament as the number one seed. They split the regular season series with second-place Keystone, last year's tournament champion. The winner gets an auto-bid into the tournament and will more than likely play in Auburn.

Id have to say right now the AC outfielder's would be as follows

1st team
Perham      Brockport
Randall      Oneonta
Basile         Fredonia
O'Connor   Oswego
Thomas      SunyIt

2nd team
Jarvis        Plattsburgh
Shaffer     Oswego
Avery        Cortland
Gentzke    Brockport
Schwind    Plattsburgh

My bad on the defensive stats... they are farther down the page.

Bob Maxwell

Mostly the same names I came up with...   a few comments:

I think Avery would make it even with just a .308 BA when you factor in his defense (1.000 Field pct) Average may keep him on second team.  With playing the most games in the OF for Cortland he was the main outfielder in the top teams lineup.

Also, I would put Coromato on the first team even with only starting the 8 games.  His .417 average, .583 slug Pct and .500 OBP are all in the top of the league... and he did start more then half the games...

And I agree that Perham will end up on the first team in some capacity, I'm not sure it will be as an outfielder.  He only played 4 games there.  He was 3B for 4 and DH'd for the other 6... so I would think he would be the first team Utility of DH.

Of course, we still don't know if there are any minimum thresholds that have to be met when this is voted on by the coaches.   I would use a standard of you have to start in at least half the games... and if you played multiple spots you would be looked at as the one position where you played the most at first and then as a secondary possibility consideration in the others or Utility.

Any other comments on Outfielders?

All Sunyac
I am almost positive all conference is voted on by only the coaches and stats don't really play a factor as far a minimum BA or w/l or era.

Each coach can vote for players from other teams and they can't vote for their own players. Whoever has the most votes is on the team.

Its nice to make the all sunyac team but like most all other all-star teams, there are always a few left off that deserve to be on!

Scuba,

I beleive that you are correct and that is the process... The criteria that the coaches use for their selections are the statistics in the conference only games, NOT the entire season.  Fran made that clear last year after there was some discussion about the selections.

And I'm sure that they do put thier personal feelings into who they vote for too... as well as using the conference statistics.

To clarify my comment about Perham... I think that he will definitelybe on the first team.  And didn't mean to sound as if I don't think he is derserving as an outfielder.  Based on my loose criteria of having started more then half the confernce games... he would qualify, but would be looked at first as a DH since he played more games there.  However, if the case was to be that someone who is also very strongly deserving of first team was another candidate as DH (say Murphy from Fredoina) then you could look at those two in other postions they played in conference games... and Perham would be compared with the outfielders and third baseman.  He compares very vfavorably with any of the outfielders, DH's and thrid baseman... And what ever postion, he is a first teamer in my book.

Great season Jared!  Keep it up...

Jared Perham definately deserves to be on the 1st team, he is another kid I coached against in American Legion. Real nice kid and a good player.

As far as coaches and who they vote for, they definately call each other up and talk up guys to other coaches.
The criterion is very loose and thats the way its going to continue because its soooo hard to remember who was on the other team when you are trying to coach your own team. The exception is when a kid has a day against you and you def. remember him then.

Any thoughts on who pitches what game this weekend?

sunyacguru

i think jeudes for oneonta, mascari for bport, pretty sure kelley already threw against cortland but hes the only pitcher for pburgh who can give them a chance, and i dunno what joe brown will do cause i dont think he likes to run pitchers out against teams that they have already thrown against. With him having a deep staff he might run someone out there that pburgh hasnt seen. Only other possibility is maybe the Filak kid for oneonta instead of jeudes.

Any First team Sunyac predictions for all the posistions including pitchers?

Bob Maxwell

I'll take a shot at it... I am going to say that to qualify you need to have started more then half the conference games.  And then you are considered in the position that you started the most games first, and then secondarily in other positions that you played at least 2 games in.

With that as my guideline, and based on the statistics from ONLY the conference games:

This is what is listed in each column below.
1) Games started in that position/total conference games started
2) Batting Average (top15 rank in conference)
3) Extra base hits (2B/3B/HR)
4) RBI's (top 15 rank in conference)
5) Slugging percentage (top15 rank in conference
6 On base percentage (top15 rank in conference)
