Shouldn't stats profs be
able to count to seven
e'en in Michigan?

I retired a stats
Lecturer, not professor.
Counting??! :D

Chapman would be great;
Wooster could lose BeltTM, causing
OxyBob meltdown.

OB's head would explode
With such force it would end
Southern California.
Respectfully, Mr Ypsi...

I don't see how I can get five syllables out of "Southern California".

Now if we use a "Schwarzeneggerian" pronunciation, we can go with

"Cal - ee - for - nee - yah", and wipe out the entire state.

... Depending where you are Southern is attempted to be one syllable  (Suthrn) ... but not in Michigan.
I can speak the "su'thun" dialect.  There are two syllables, anyway that you try to mumble it. ;)

That's why I said attempt...  I didn't necessarily say they accomplished it!

PS,

My brother was a math major (then a hs math teacher his whole career).  He always claimed math had NOTHING to do with arithmetic!

GS,

I want to thank the academy for this award.  I wish to thank all the people who helped me get here, but, alas, I can't count them all. :P

So, at E.M.U
the ability to count
makes one tenure-track?

I grew up in SE Michigan, and rarely is EMU confused with an institution of higher learning. :D

.... I hope my mother-in-law (a Huron/Eagle) doesn't read these boards!

Yeah, that's about right...  There were some other math majors I graduated with who couldn't do simple arithmetic but got some of the really heady, abstract upper level stuff pretty easily.

EMU can be great.
It can be awful.
Depends on kid and prof.

For David:

EMU's professors
Gen'rally don't count.
Unsure whether they can. ;)

Chuck, I'm not quite sure
that you've grasped that Haikus are
Five, Seven, and Five.

I was wond'rin when
One of you guys would tell him
'Xactly what they were

Sometimes he had six
When there should be only five
Man was I surprised

Then I would see eight
Plus the five would have no mate
Then seven was late

Oops!  My bad!  I just
Went for seventeen total.

The BeltTM stays with Woo!

Hiram visits Wed.

There's a "Law" that says

Works for Haikus too.

Here is one that Bill the Bard wrote...

When I do count the clock that tells the time,
And see the brave day sunk in hideous night;
When I behold the violet past prime,
And sable curls, all silver'd o'er with white;
When lofty trees I see barren of leaves,
Which erst from heat did canopy the herd,
And summer's green all girded up in sheaves,
Borne on the bier with white and bristly beard;
Then of thy beauty do I question make,
That thou among the wastes of time must go,
Since sweets and beauties do themselves forsake,
And die as fast as they see others grow;
And nothing 'gainst Time's scythe can make defence
Save breed, to brave him when he takes thee hence.

;D

I prefer trochaic tetrameter...

   By the shores of Gitche Gumee,
    By the shining Big-Sea-Water,
    Stood the wigwam of Nokomis,
    Daughter of the Moon, Nokomis.
    Dark behind it rose the forest,
    Rose the black and gloomy pine-trees,
    Rose the firs with cones upon them;
    Bright before it beat the water,
    Beat the clear and sunny water,
    Beat the shining Big-Sea-Water.
