Then is UMPI the Nagorno-Karabakh of D-3??

Well played, sir.

After mentioning the Duchy of Grand Fenwick I was waiting for someone to come back with a quip about Fredonia. But the real-but-sounds-made-up obscure Caucasian territory of Nagorno-Karabakh is even better.

And they'd be taking it from a likely candidate... Stout has lost 9/10.

But... on the other hand... Stout has lost 9/10.  I'm not sure if they've got it in themselves to beat Platteville...

I'm required by law to declare every time a reference in a Greg Sager post requires me to use Google or Dictionary.com to decipher it. Check.

Oh, that's just sad.  Everyone should know immediately what and where the Duchy of Grand Fenwick is.  Immediate corrective action is called for.

If Crown would retain the BeltTM over the summer it would be close to Pat so he could periodically check in on it to make sure it is safe and he could ensure no "National Championship" team would attempt to steal it.

Pat would be as likely to facilitate such a theft as to prevent it.  But it's a moot point; I believe the BeltTM and its handlers have obtained a restraining order, requiring Pat to stay at least 500 yards from the BeltTM at all times.

Don't look now, but Crown might put all this ridicule behind them by sneaking into the playoffs.  Last night they beat 2nd place Minnesota-Morris by 12 and have another winnable game today that could move them within a game of the last playoff spot.  So if Crown can make a earlier season loss by 5 into a 12 point win, I think we can safely assume that there will be a similar turnaround in the Stout game.  They only need 46 more points than last time!

Stout forced OT... but Platteville retained the Belt.  Next up is defending National Champ (and former Belt holder UW Stevens Point).

And, from the "it still doesn't matter" department... Stout destroyed Crown 109-67 last night.

Their moment of glory just eluded Crown

So Stevens Point has The BeltTM  by virtue of their 82-54 demolition of Platteville tonight, and the next defense is Saturday at La Crosse. Could prove interesting as La Crosse was an easy winner over former belt holder River Falls tonight 93-78.

Are we witnessing belt history?  Could the belt champion from last year enter this years tournament with the belt after losing it during the season?  Has this ever happened before?

To my knowledge it has never happened. But Bill will have the definitive answer I'm sure.

I'm not sure The Belt has ever entered the following year's NCAA tournament from the same conference as the previous year's winner. But awaiting the official word from The Belt Historian.

Just Bill

No, no team that held the BeltTM from the previous year has ever taken it into the NCAA Tournament.

As far as teams who have had the BeltTM, lost it, then regained it within the same season that list includes.

2006-07 (aka the ODAC year) - Va. Wesleyan (lost it and regained it twice, actually)
2006-07 - Guilford
2006-07 - Bridgewater (Va.)
2007-08 (aka the UAA year) - Brandeis
2008-09 (aka the HCAC year) - Wash U. (regained BeltTM in national title game)
2008-09 - Franklin
2008-09 - Transylvania
2009-10 (aka the NCAC year) - Wittenberg
2009-10 - Wooster
2010-11 (aka the WIAC year) - UW-Stevens Point

2010-11 D-III Championship BeltTM path:

Start-Dec. 3 - UW-Stevens Point
Dec. 4-Feb. 4 - UW-River Falls
Feb. 5-Feb. 8 - UW-Whitewater
Feb. 9-Feb. 15 - UW-Platteville
Feb. 16-Current - UW-Stevens Point

Thanks to UWRF we are on our way to a record for fewest number of times the BeltTM has changed hands in a season. Currently we are at 4. The previous low was 9 in both 2008-09 and 2009-10.
