At first glance I thought the mascot's shirt said 'beat Hope' rather than 'be at Hope'. :o
It was intentional.

A certain nearby school that will remain nameless wears shirts that read "Beat Hope"...
Hope students don't wear "Beat (said school)" for a list of reasons, so the (in my opinion clever) response has been "BE_AT HOPE"

Or as some of us say "Be Anchored At Hope"

Always thought it strange for students to want to wear a shirt with their opponents name on it

Agreed. I don't understand why you would ever willingly let your opponent know how much space they take up in your head.

On that lovely note, an email sent to Hope faculty, staff, and students today regarding the Alma game on Saturday labeled the match-up "The new Rivalry Perhaps"...

A few years ago Alma were selling Beat HopeTm T-shirts in the lobby outside their old gym.  They had maybe 20 students at the game, mostly women wearing Beat HopeTm shirts and 3 dudes dressed as ballerina's(still hilarious).

FDF asked one of the co-eds about the t-shirts and she said its because Hope is our rival.  To which FDF and I have had many, many good and snarky comments to each other over the years as we watched Hope rack up a winning streak that reached into the 40's.

8 or 9 years later I'm about to witness an MIAA program not named Calvin bring an actual bus load of students on the road to DeVos Fieldhouse which follows Hope doing the same 3 weeks ago.

It all seems very plausible now.  Beat AlmaTm

Your nation's military academies disagree wholeheartedly.

Ah yes, but they don't exclude their own name from those banners.  In the case of the Alma shirts referenced by sac, and the "other school" who wore them, their own school name was not present.  In fact the Alma shirts were even in Hope's colors

My nation's military academies, and the student athletes attending said academies, have earned my, and most likely, each others respect. The Army Navy game is the only game allowed to be played after every other team has finished their season. To compare a Grand Rapids based CRC college playing a Holland based RCA college to the Black Knights of West Point vs. the Midshipmen of Annapolis is a very big leap.

Shirts like that happen in just about every rivalry everywhere. Even for lots of games that aren't rivalries.

+K. I love those shirts because it does look like 'beat Hope'.

I need to get some shirts made for the big 43-man squamish game this weekend.

Greek Tragedy

I think Lawrence has shirts that say "Better Dead than Red" referring to Ripon.

I also have a Grinnell shirt. The front asks, "Where (hell) is Grinnell?" (Not sure if Hell is in there, I can check when I get home). And the back answers, "Who the Hell Cares!"

I don't really understand the shirt and phrases because it sounds like they are taking shots at themselves.

For this particular instance, might I suggest "Go Alma Mater"?

Welcome back,
Your dreams were your ticket out.

Welcome back,
To that same old place that you laughed about.

Well the names have all changed since you hung around,
But those dreams have remained and they're turned around.
