St. Thomas captures The BeltTm and will hold it in the great State of Minnesota for the summer.  I'm all out of funny, clever or annoying.  So congratulations to the Tommies for capturing The BeltTm in its intended way.

Have we finally found a worthy belt holder?  A good team raised to greatness by possession.

It appears so...

Augsburg Auggies 71 @ Carleton Knights 76

The Knights have now won 8 games in a row and make that 5 in a row with possession of The BeltTM! I love to see a run like this propelled by The BeltTM. Before they had possession of ItTM, they were sitting at 1-6 in the MIAC, with little to no shot at making the 6 team league playoff. But now, sitting at 9-6 and bringing The BeltTM home to Northfield after each battle, it seems all but certain they will have a chance to win the MIAC AQ come early March. The run continues on Wednesday as the Knights make the trip up to face the Macalester College Scots.

Its this kind of hubris that puts The BeltTm in places like Macalester.

Indeed River Falls had it for two glorious months.

Incidentally a school called Hope has the record for most number of days holding The BeltTm during the course of season not including summers at 73.  I know that's not what was asked but I think its important for the public to know these things.

I failed to acknowledge the 10th Anniversary of the BeltTM back on January 20. My shame knows no limit.

Someone should inform The BeltTM that if it enjoyed the 73 days it spent in Holland during the dreary winter months, most would agree that best time to visit is April - October...

I heard tell (and might have even witnessed) that while The BeltTM was in Holland, they turned off the snow melt system, since ItsTM gloriousness was enough to keep the streets and sidewalks clear of snow - not by melting it, but ItsTM mere presence stopped the snow from arriving at all .

Not so fast sac. The Knights and The BeltTM are on an absolute tear!

Carleton Knights 80 @ Macalester Scots 46

All the cupcakes may have been in Northfield for the birthday of The BeltTM, but they sure didn't play slow tonight. A full team effort was turned in tonight in St. Paul, but they were sparked by Fy Kent Hanson who had 30 points tonight for a career high. Carleton has been one of the best defensive teams this year, as they rank 9th in the country in scoring defense... before this game! Make that 9 straight wins for Carleton and 6 in a row as they wear their new BeltTM.

After their dismal start, a Pool C birth is just a dream right now for the Knights, but a quick look at how hot they are right now makes them one of the scarier teams to be a bid thief come tourney time. The last four losses are... (all in a row, from Dec. 14th to Jan. 11th)

  • 63-55 road loss to Concordia Moorhead
  • 70-63 (OT) home loss to preseason MIAC favorite Bethel University
  • 62-61 (OT) home loss to defending national champion UST
  • 69-65 home loss to #7 UW-River Falls

In other words, a couple bounces go their way during this stretch and we might be looking at Carleton College, not only the owner of The BeltTM, but also a Pool C candidate.

Carleton travels to defending National Champion, 2 times The BeltTm holder this year and current MIAC leader St. Thomas on Saturday.

I'm sure it will go fine.
