Well no matter how the final four goes, for the second consecutive season, the D3 champ will also have possession of The BeltTM.  It's just a question as to what region it will go to spend the offseason.

Just based on school locations, in theory, it has a 50% chance of going to Massachusetts for the summer.

But my prognostications have both Massachusetts schools losing tomorrow night and The BeltTM Championship will, also for the second year in a row, will have a first time Final Four school - who also is undefeated, vying for the title.   While I think Whitman will be hard to stop, I thought that of (my) Benedictine Eagles last year, part of me hopes that Augustana brings it home to the Quad Cities...

The Belt, I believe, has always gone to the NCAA champ.  We've been rooting for the scenario where that's not the case, but I think it has been for as far back as we've tracked it.

True. The BeltTM and the Walnut & Bronze have always ended up in the same hands on the last day of the season. As much as we all root for the Dream ScenarioTM, it's never happened. It requires a strategically-placed upset at the end of the regular season in which a team that's already been mathematically eliminated from post-season consideration upsets the current holder of The BeltTM, and that's inevitably a longshot.

This season we actually came about as close to the Dream ScenarioTM as we ever have. Gustavus Adolphus, which ended the season with a 5-20 record, hosted the holder of The BeltTM, Carleton (for whom Thee Most Exalted Bespangled CinctureTM was redubbed "The Goat BeltTM" for as long as the Carlies held onto it), on February 18, GAC's Senior Day and the season finale for the Gusties. GAC had the lead with a little over two minutes left in that game, but the Gusties couldn't manage to score over the course of the game's final 5:23, and they ended up losing, 63-60. They were two missed treys in the final ten seconds away from sending the game into overtime and possibly pulling off the upset that would've brought about the Dream ScenarioTM for the first time ever.

Alas, we're once again stuck with the spectacle of The BeltTM being treated like an afterthought in Salem while all of the focus is upon the hoopla of the net-cutting and the handing over of the Walnut & Bronze national championship trophy. Bo-ring. When's the last time that somebody did a diving crossbody or a moonsault senton or a frankensteiner off of the top of the backboard onto an opponent, or hit an opponent over the head with a metal folding chair, in order to claim the Walnut & Bronze?

This is the first time that the Beavers have had possession of The BeltTM. I hope that they don't use ItTM to help build a dam or something.

I kind of like the Dam BeltTM. So easy to use in a sentence.

I was looking through the history of The BeltTM today, just out of curiosity. Since The Dream ScenarioTM hasn't happened yet, The BeltTM always enters the NCAA Tournament, but I wanted to see how the team who brought it in has fared. Assuming I looked everything up correctly (brackets were tricky):

One and done: '17 Bethel, 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, '09 Transylvania, '08 Chicago
Round of 32: '07 Hampden-Sydney
Sweet 16: '14 Albertus Magnus, '11 UWSP, '10 Wooster
Elite 8: '16 Alma
Final 4: '13 St. Thomas
Title Game: '15 Augustana
Champion: None

Good research! So if The Dream ScenarioTM is where the team in possession of The BeltTM is not in the NCAA tournament, what is the name of the event where the team holding onto ItTM goes wire to wire? Both have been elusive thus far in the storied history of The BeltTM

Pat Coleman

I'd suggest it could or should be named after Platteville or Bo Ryan.
