Sixteen-year-old steps up to the counter with a six-pack, hands the cashier his father's driver's license:

I'm old, but I can remember there used to be no problem for a kid going to the local corner store [where the parents had an account] I remember picking up beer for my dad and cigs for my mom, without a problem back in the '50's.

I can remember some time in the late 70's my brother(who was about 10) went to the local pharmacy(in PA)to get cigars for my uncle. The women behind the counter  asked if they were for him. He told her no that they were for our uncle. Women said ok, took the money and gave him the cigars. Never would happen today.

Though I run a liquor store and I can't count how many parents try and use their minor children's cards to buy booze. Of course we have to deny them.

They probably didn't think you would take the 'be kind, rewind' edict seriously...

My favorite 'carding' story is a grocery store #2 son cashiered at.  He got reprimanded for not carding his mother! ::)

I got carded when I was pregnant. No, I wasn't buying anything for me.  ::) ::) I was on my way to a graduation party and was picking up something to bring to the party. I didn't bring my license into the store with me. The old guy behind the counter made me go back to my car to get it.  :o :o ;D ;D

The best is when the waiter/waitress/clerk has that brief moment when you can see the wheels spin on whether they need to card you or not.......and then they look at your hair.

For me believe it or not you can tell a lot about age from a person's hands. Not always easy, especially with gloves on because of winter, but that's a way you can judge.

They've gotten rid of those "We card everyone under 39" signs that used to be prevalent.  I wonder if they realized someone could just claim to be 40 and their whole system falls apart?

My father has had white hair basically since his 30s (he is in his early 80s now). He was in Florida about thirty years ago late in his father's life visiting/handling medical items. He was in a store picking up some food and a six pack for his stay. He got up to pay at the grocery store and noticed there was some police in an office, but didn't think anything of it. The young lady (probably early 20s) was scanning his items and asked for his ID. He says, he told her "I could kiss you!" and laughed. Her reply, "we just had someone try and use a fake ID to buy alcohol and the police are here because of it. While they are here, EVERYONE gets IDed."

LOL My dad clearly had that boost to his self esteem immediately run over by a truck.

When I was in college, I lived with my brother for a year.  He was 22 and I was 19, age to buy alcohol was 21.  He misplaced his license, and when he went to Spike and Mike's, the party store where he had been buying alcohol for a couple years, they carded him.  He looked younger than his actual age.  When he had no ID, they would not sell to him.  He had to come get his younger, underage brother to go to the beer store for him.  I wouldn't let him live it down for a while until I realized that in our middle age, he's got the better end of that stick.  Spike and Mike's has not aged as well as we did.
