Happy for Elmhurst grad asst Ben Gardner former Hope guard and something like three time wearer of The BeltTm

lmitzel

With their 78-72 win over Illinois Wesleyan last night, Elmhurst carries The BeltTM into the NCAA Tournament, where they will also play for that other, lesser object of wood and metal.

But the Blue Jays will not have history on their side. Here's how, in the Modern Era, holders going into the tournament have fared:

One and done: '17 Bethel, 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, '09 Transylvania, '08 Chicago
Round of 32: '19 Nebraska Wesleyan, '18 York (PA), '07 Hampden-Sydney
Sweet 16: '14 Albertus Magnus, '11 UWSP, '10 Wooster
Elite 8: '16 Alma
Final 4: '13 St. Thomas
Title Game: '15 Augustana
Champion: None

I should explain this one because it's different than what Ryan has in The BeltTM path:

2001
Calvin
Chicago
Wooster
Savannah Art & Design
Methodist
Lincoln (PA)
St. John Fisher
Nazareth
Rochester
SUNY Geneseo
SUNY Potsdam
SUNY Brockport
SUNY Poly
SUNY Geneseo
SUNY New Paltz
SUNY Brockport
SUNY Geneseo
SUNY Oswego (non-champion)
2002
SUNY Oswego
St. Lawrence
Christopher Newport
Randolph-Macon
Emory & Henry
Virginia Wesleyan
Emory & Henry
Hampden-Sydney
Catholic
Clark
Elizabethtown

Otterbein

Instead it is:
2001
Calvin
Chicago
Wooster
Savannah Art & Design
Chowan (non-champion)
2002
Chowan
Lycoming
Alvernia
Gettysburg
Muhlenberg
Ursinus
Johns Hopkins
Gettysburg
Franklin & Marshall
Gettysburg
Lycoming
Randolph-Macon
Otterbein

SCAD's loss to Methodist came before they beat Wooster.  So instead The BeltTM was passed from SCAD to Chowan and spent the summer in North Carolina.  This was the last time that a non-champion held The BeltTM through the summer.

Yeah, I clearly got confused by their two games against Wooster that season.

MapTM updates weren't too bad here, though a bunch of upstate New York and some of Pennsylvania got markers removed. I only had to go find gyms for I think four schools, which was pretty straightforward.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Did someone invoke the BeltTM without proper capitalization, trademark and most importantly ROYALTIES. Get me the Weasels on Line 2, stat!

"That seems silly and pointless..." - Hoops Fan

The first and still most accurate description of the D3 Championship BeltTM thread.

A strongly worded letter should suffice, as this lower-case piece of leather is not the true and actual belt. This would be an exhibition, much like pre-season, and the BeltTM would not deign to show itselfTM at such an event.

I dunno... I think that someone should petition the landlord to amend the name of this chat room so that the title reflects proper trademark protection.

I've completed my project and will now share the fruits of my labor.  I've created this spreadsheet which logs all 1,107 games  where The Belt™ has been up for grabs (both Stealth Era and Modern Era).  Not surprisingly, there are many games that I have incomplete information.  (And probably some mistakes I made along the way).  If anyone is able to find information that I'm missing - I'd love to be able to add it into the spreadsheet.

A few interesting tidbits:

Can you unlock the Stealth EraTM so that when I scroll the spreadsheet I can see the rows?  My excel-fu is weak today.

I have access to a ton of old newspapers and can spend a little time trying to fill in gaps in the time ahead.

I attempted to give you read/write access, but you may need to have a google account for me to give you that access.  If it is more helpful for me to attach the excel file in an email, I can do that.  I appreciate your willingness to help fill in some of these gaps.
