Is this the first time the buelt has been West of the Mississippi?

Officially, yes.  Since I started the BeltTM with the 2006-07 season, it's the first time we've crossed Old Man River.

Unofficially, Sager went back and did a little retro-research (go back to Page 5 on this thread) going as far back as 2002-03.  In that history, Southwestern (Tex.) and Trinity (Tex.) each held it during the 2005-06 season.

I'm still waiting for Sager to keep going back until he can find his North Park Vikings holding the BeltTM.

I've almost finished translating the ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs in those old box scores.

How many conferences have held the belt at some point this season?

started in the NESCAC before being taken by Brandeis and the UAA, then passed around the UAA like a head cheerleader, then WIAC nabbed it in the first round and now BV takes it back to the IOWA conference? So I guess that makes 4. The UAA has a good chance to grab it back though on Friday and bring it down to Salem.

Remember, it's now the buelt until further notice.

I believe the 'correct' pronunciation would be 'bwaylt'. :D

I think what is confusing to people is that the school and the street at disney world/production company are pronounced differently.

I think that Chuck's right on the pronunciation of "buelt".

I found a Box Score from the 1979 National Championship game.

You just haven't seen real basketball unless you've seen some guy with the head of a jackal dunk the ball while wearing a white linen skirt and a golden-serpent crown.

Not to mention the Mexican-American War battle and the Cuban social club.

I'm not sure.  They pronounce it b-(you)-na vista, even though no one else would say it that way.

I think the idea is that while the BueltTM is around Buena Vista's collective waist we should pronounce it the way they do, even if it defies the laws of the English (and Spanish) language.

Now that I think about it, you're right. When Buena Vista played at Elmhurst a couple of years ago, the P.A. announcer kept saying, "Beyoona Vista", and since no one on the Beavers bench or Beavers clothing in the stands protested, that was obviously the way that the P.A. announcer had been instructed to say it.
