Mr. Ypsi

Update on Charlie Furbush: another 1.2 innings tonite, 3 hits, 1 run.  era = 2.00.

As both a d3 and Tigers fan, I'm a bit concerned.  His first nine innings, he was 0.00.  Since then he is 4.00.  With only 18 innings pitched I am certainly neither giving up on him nor touting him for the HoF, but concerned whether scouting reports are now finding flaws in his pitching.

C'mon Charlie, both d3 and TigerNation are rooting for you! :)

Birmingham-Southern OF Drew Leachman was assigned to the Rookie GCL Twins.

The Mariners signed Pomona-Pitzer P David Colvin and CMS P Alex Sunderland. Colvin will begin at Rookie Pulaski. Sunderland will begin in the Rookie Arizona League.

The Phillies signed Cal Lutheran P Ian Durham. He doesn't have a link.

Former College of Wooster player, Greg Van Horn has signed with the Rockford Riverhawks of the Frontier League.

Probably not where he wanted to start his pro career but, at least he still gets to go to the ballpark everyday. Good luck on your season and hope you impress a MLB team.

Oxy P Brooks Belter will begin at Short Season for the Rays.

Wheaton (Ill.) P Steve Dennison was signed by the Astros. Dennison was the Marlins' 34th round pick in 2010 but didn't sign. He'll begin in the Rookie Gulf Coast League.

Whitworth P Nathan Johnson signed with the Royals. He doesn't have a link, but he'll reportedly begin in the Rookie Arizona League. If so, he would be a teammate of Cortland P Nicolas Blanco, a fellow D-III free agent signee (2010).

Oberlin P Phil Brua signed a FA contract with the Blue Jays. Brua was assigned to Short Season, where he'll be a teammate of Wooster SS Matt Johnson.

Keystone C Bryan Henry was assigned to Rookie Missoula by the Diamondbacks, so he'll once again be catching Keystone P Victor Lara, who'll begin his second MiLB season at Missoula.

EDIT: Keystone's Eric Groff will man 3B at Missoula.

Keystone's Yazy Arbelo will participate in the MWL home run derby on Monday. He'll start at first base in the all star game on Tuesday.

I like this approach: The 2011 Midwest League Home Run Derby will differ from competitions of the past in that it will be more of a hitting display than simply a home run hitting contest. Sponsored targets will be set up around the outfield that will reward hitters with points and prizes for themselves and fans or charities when specific targets are struck. Players will still be heavily rewarded for home runs but will also receive points for different areas of the field, as well as having points deducted for hitting foul balls or not making contact with a pitch. In the end, total points will determine the winner in the three-round contest.

Cal Lutheran P Ian Durham was assigned to the Rookie GCL Phillies.
Keene State P Corey Vogt was assigned to the Rookie GCL Red Sox.
Wartburg P Brad Watson was assigned to the Rookie GCL Cardinals.
St. Thomas 3B Roy Larson was assigned to the Rookie Elizabethton Twins.

Larson is 6-foot-5, but E'ton also has a 6-foot-7 Aussie at 3B. Don't think I've ever seen a 6'7" 3B.

EDIT: Whitworth P Nathan Johnson was assigned to the Rookie AZL Royals.

Keystone's Yazy Arbelo was out of yeserday's MWL home run derby after the first round.

Keystone 1B Yazy Arbelo went 0-for-2 with a strikeout while batting third for the East in the MWL all-star game. The West won, 8-3.

Otterbein's Dan Remenowsky allowed two hits and struck out one in a scoreless .2 IP for the South in the Southern League all-star game. The North won, 6-3.

Old Westbury P Robert Whitenack was selected to play in the Sally all-star game but didn't pitch due to injury. Whitenack is currently on the disabled list.

Messiah's Chris Heisey had a night to remember against the Yankees. Heisey hit 3 HRs, scored 4 and drove in 5 from the leadoff spot.

The Yankees signed free agent UW-Whitewater P Aaron Dott. He was assigned to Single-A.

Grove City pitcher Erik Arneson and East Bay outfielder Archie Gilbert were selected by the coaches and media to play in the Eastern League all-star game, which will be played on July 13.

Alvernia catcher Anthony Recker was selected by the fans to start for the Pacific Coast League team at the Triple-A all-star game, which will be played on July 13.

The Triple-A International League and the Short Season New York-Penn League are the remaining circuits yet to announce all-star rosters. Eastern Mennonite catcher Erik Kratz is expected to be named the IL starter, which would give D-III both starting catchers at the Triple-A all-star game. The NYPL game is Aug. 16.

Former College of Wooster pitcher Matt Barnes signed with the Washington Wildthings of the Frontier League on 5/24. He was released on 6/18.
