Update on Charlie Furbush: after 21.2 innings, he is at 2.49 era.  One bit of good news: he is tied for the tallest Tiger - with Cy Young current favorite Justin Verlander!  Second bit of good news: Jim Leyland (Tigers' best manager since Sparky Anderson) has gone from thinking he was a marginal reliever to thinking he is a future starter.

[Lest anyone get too carried away for Charlie, I should note that Leyland can be almost as verbally flaky as Sparky was. :P]

St. Olaf pitcher Ben Hughes, the first D-III pick in 2011, signed with Colorado. He does not have a link.

Eastern Mennonite catcher Erik Kratz was selected to play as a backup in the Triple-A all-star game, which will be played on July 13.

Wow, it has (apparently) happened even quicker than I thought!

Tigers #5 starter Phil Coke has not won in his last 12 starts.  Some were horrible, but some were also horrible luck (he twice was pulled with a shutout, and failed to get the win).  According to the Tigers radio announcers, Phil will be replaced in the rotation by - wait for it - Charlie Furbush!

Good luck, Charlie!! ;D

The White Sox promoted Otterbein pitcher Dan Remenowsky from Double-A to Triple-A. I thought his rise would have been quicker with the numbers he's put up over the years.

Eastern Connecticut pitcher Scott Chiasson was released from the Triple-A Mexican League.

Keystone's Yazy Arbelo was in a 2-for-22 slump until last night when he drove in a career-high six runs and hit his league-leading 20th home run. Arbelo also leads the MWL with 65 RBI. The link touches on his journey that led him to Keystone.

Charlie Furbush got his maiden MLB start tonite - respectable, but far from fantastic.

In the first, he gave up one hit, but it was a solo HR.
The second was 1,2,3.
The third saw a lead-off single, steal of second, steal of third, and a balk = another run.
The fourth saw 1,2,double,3.
The fifth went single, out, SB, single = run.

All together, he went 4.2 innings, 3 ER, 5 hits, and 5 Ks.

Charlie takes the loss, as the Tiger bats totally failed him (they fell, 5-1).  Ironically, the fifth LAA run was a solo homer off Coke, the man Furbush replaced.

Two of the three runs coming as a result of steals is worrisome.  The Tigers catchers are excellent in preventing steals, so Charlie may have some work to do on holding runners.  Overall, I'm disappointed, but not discouraged by his outing.

Thanks Osh for the info on Scott. I went to Quintnana Roo web site and found the article about his retirement.  Apparently elbow problems has hampered him the start of the season and he decided to retire after 14 seasons in 3 countries, (US, Japan and Mexico). He had a a couple of stints with the Cubs in 2001/2 if I remember correctly.  He and his wife are also expecting their third child.

Congrats to Scott on his retirement from professional baseball

In just over 3 seasons with the AAA Quintana Roo Tigers he accumulated the following:

SV  ERA    IP    H   R   ER       K    BB
87  2.26 171.1 123 53 43     140  73

ILVBB

Add 2010 Trinity (TX) grad Eric Binder who signed with the Cardinals. He is now with the Batavia (N.Y.) Muckdogs of the Class A (short-season) New York-Penn League.

Oshkosh pitcher Ryan Demmin ranks third in all of Short Season with three wins.
Keystone first baseman Yazy Arbelo still leads all of Single-A with 20 HR and 65 RBI.

The second MLB start for Charlie Furbush was a disaster.  He yielded more runs (9) than he got outs (8).  (Fortunately for the sake of redemption on the season, only 4 runs were counted as earned - an error prevented the third out in the third, after which all hell broke loose.)

His record falls to 1-3 and his era balloons to north of 4.  I'm certainly not yet throwing in the towel on him (no word yet whether the Tigers feel like I do ;)), but I am getting concerned.  Charlie, pitch like I'm pretty sure you can! :o

Mr. Ypsi

Furbush was sent down to Toledo immediately after his disaster, but that does not necessarily mean anything (Galarraga was sent down last year during the All Star break, and last year was his 'perfect*' game).  The key date will be on or about the 20th, when the 5th starter is next scheduled.  Speculation abounds whether Charlie will be back, or whether they will try Jacob Turner, a highly-touted prospect who has so far not even pitched triple-A.

As a d3 fan, I'm rooting for Charlie.  As a Tigers fan, I say 'mow 'em down, whoever you are'! ;D  With Scherzer falling back to earth (a great record only because of great run support), it is getting frustrating knowing that (aside from the almost guaranteed victory when Justin Verlander pitches), 4 out of 5 games are a total crap shoot. :P

OshDude

Anthony Recker, Vinny Rottino and Erik Kratz all went 0-for-2 at the Triple-A all-star game, but there were only nine total hits in the game.

Kratz was featured in a profile regarding his eventful all-star game past.

Archie Gilbert singled in two at-bats and committed an error, and Erik Arnesen struck out the side on 14 pitches in the second inning, at the Eastern League all-star game.

The Tigers recalled Charlie Furbush.

The Rays signed free agent Joe Bateman and assigned him to Triple-A Durham, according to the MLB transaction page. I didn't know he was a free agent. He pitched for the A's Double-A affiliate on Saturday.

The Rockies assigned Ben Hughes to the Rookie Casper Ghosts.
