Former CNU Captain Kenny Moreland continues his successful streak with  the Bluefield Orioles, having allowed only 1 earned run in his last 29 innings. Moreland is now 4-3, walking very few batters (some things never change), and pitching lights out baseball.

With his younger brother Kevin recording 13 saves for the CPL Penninsula Pilots this summer, and an ERA under 1.00, quite a summer for the pitching Moreland Brothers.   Great article in the Daily Press  (Newport News)  on August 2, that I'll attempt to paste. No guarantees as pasting is at the extreme limit of my computer skills.

Jimmy got his first start this past Saturday night and retired the first 11 batters he faced.  Completed 5 innings and got the win.  He will be in the starting rotation now for the rest of the season.

Brian Oates, Trinity Univ RHP has had a good 1st summer (hot) in Peoria, AZ Mariner rookie league.  Led team in innings, and some other categories, got shipped to Pulaski, VA team last night.  See if he can get a couple of moderate weather starts... although that nasty hurricane rain might 'dampen' his arrival.

After 43 games (7 HRs, 28 RBIs in that span) with Rookie League team Helena Michael Vass (Chapman) was recently promoted  to the West Virginia Power (A League). Nice opportunity when you can get it, eh?  :) ;) :D

CNU's Moreland finished 6-4, led the Bluefield Orioles in ERA, and has been moved up to the High A Frederick Keys.

Moreland walked 6 in 67.2  innings with Bluefield, 3 less than Daniel Cabrera walked in 2 2/3 innings today for the big Orioles. Maybe the O's would like to see some control for a change...

   A nice promotion for  a hard-working guy.

Oates was masterful in his first Pulaski Maariners (A) start at the Bristol sox tonite.  (I think everbody there would rather have been at the Bristol Motor Speedway)

How about Kiely from Trinity CT?  Heard he is out of the bullpen in the Angels system and doing well.

Saw this nugget on Rototimes.com:
Jordan Zimmerman won't be recalled by the Nationals as he is dealing with biceps tendinitis, according to Nationals.com. GM Jim Bowden said, "We felt it was better that we handle him like we did with John Lannan, where we shut him down. Jordan will be in big league camp. He has a chance to make our rotation out of Spring Training."

On the heels of an outstanding initial pro season in rookie ball, former LC SS Ronnie LaBrie will be attending instructional league with the Nationals later this fall.

Tim Kiely of Trinity CT is currently pitching for the Cedar Rapids Kernels of the Midwest League (Class A - LA Angels).  He is 5-1 with a 2.00 ERA and 2 Saves in 21 appearances since his call up from Orem of the Pioneer League (rookie) on June 26th.  Cedar Rapids begins its first round playoff series today against TX Rangers affiliate, Clinton Lumber Kings.

Of note is that Jimmy Dougher (Cortland State) is also pitching in the Midwest League Playoffs for the Lansing Lugnuts.  Looks like he has had himself a good year as well.

A couple to add.
Andrew Pinkney from Emory signed another free agent contract and likely will start on AA New Hampshire in the Blue Jays organization.
Nick Vera from Trinity, TX has been on the DL in the Cardinal's organization.

Marietta's Mike DeMark (class of 2006 - National Champions), was named the San Diego Padres Minor League Pitcher of the Year for 2008.

He pitched in both A and AA ball last season, not sure where he'll start this season.

Former UWSP pitcher Jordan Zimmermann will be with the big Club at Spring Training with a chance to head out with the Nationals at the end of camp.
