A few updates, assuming we all know the day-to-day news of the four currently active big leaguers:
Jordan Zimmermann is making the last of his rehab starts in Triple-A before reportedly heading back to the Washington rotation on or around Aug. 20. Not that it matters, but Zimmermann is 0-2 with a 2.10 ERA in seven rehab starts, spanning four levels. The rest of his rehab line: 25.2 IP, 19 H, 4 BB, 22 K, .207 OBA. Take away an ugly start at Hagerstown (5 IP, 6 ER, 2 HR) and he would have 0 ER in 19.2 IP. I know you can't do that, but it's meant to show that he's been the old JZ for the most part.

Zach Lutz is back to crushing Double-A pitching after missing a couple of weeks on the DL. In his past 10 games Lutz has 7 HR, 16 RBI, 13 R, 4 2B while batting .350 with a 1.410 OPS. Overall Lutz is batting .280 with 16 HR and 37 RBI with a .985 OPS in 51 games for three teams.

Yazy Arbelo has been on a tear, hitting .436 in his last 10 games with 5 HR, 17 RBI and a 1.361 OPS. He has a current double-digit hitting streak as well.

Arbelo's former Keystone teammate Eric Groff has fallen off his approximately one RBI/game pace after driving in two in the past 10 games. He still has 32 RBI in 45 games.

Vinny Rottino is making a case to get back to The Show. At Double-A Rottino is hitting .285 with 6 HR, 56 RBI, 17 SB, 1 CS, a 39:38 K:BB ratio and a .363 OBP in 89 games.

Casey Lawrence is 5-1 with a 1.90 ERA in 11 games (nine starts). He also sports a 41:7 K/BB ratio with 37 H allowed in 50 IP.

Cole Kimball is 6-1 with 10 saves and a 2.71 ERA at two levels. Kimball has given up 42 hits and struck out 78 in 66.1 innings overall. He's notched all of his four saves at Double-A during the past three weeks.

James Wood is out for the year with an injury.

The Dodgers granted Jack Taschner free agency after they designated him for assignment. He was last seen in the WI State League last week, pitching in the last game of the Oshkosh Giants' season.

Veteran OF Archie Gilbert has 10 HR, 46 RBI, 53 R, 28 2B, a 52:44 K/BB ratio and 25 SB in 97 games.

Andrew Pevsner has given up a run in one of his 11 relief appearances. He has a 1.76 ERA.

Ryan Demmin has two saves and a 1.76 ERA with 15 K's in 15.1 IP, all in relief.

Playing every day at 3B in Single-A, Frank Pfister has 21 2B, 6 HR and 40 RBI in 94 games.

Kenny Moreland has a 3.16 ERA at the Single-A level with a 56:10 K/BB ratio in 82.2 IP (13 starts).

When he finds playing time Sean Killeen has produced, hitting .500 with a 1.261 OPS in 16 AB's while playing roughly every other day since a promotion to Single-A.

Ryan Flannery is sixth in the SAL with 14 saves. He's also holding batters to a .219 average and has 58 K's in 66.2 IP. Flannery gave up his first HR in his 66th inning.

Corey Hamman is holding his own after a promotion to Triple-A, where he's 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 18 games of short relief. At Triple-A Hamman has 22 K's and 5 BB in 25.1 IP.

Ryan Cavan is now playing 2B, but he's still hitting, banging out 28 2B, 11 HR and 52 RBI to go along with 68 R in 110 games.

Veteran reliever Joe Bateman is once again putting up great numbers one call away from the big leagues. Bateman is 4-0 with a 1.93 ERA in Triple-A. In 43 games Bateman has 48 K's and a .204 OBA in 60.2 IP. You'd think a RHP who holds Triple-A righty swingers to a .174 AVG would get a shot, even if he's 30 years old.

Despite a rough July and August, reliever Kurt Yacko is 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA and has 61 K's in 56.2 IP. Opponents are hitting .233 against Yacko on the year.

Reliever Dan Remenowsky has been on the DL since late June, but he was lights-out until then, striking out 60 in 39.1 IP and holding a 2.75 ERA.

Another season, another banner season for veteran reliever Scott Chiasson. Again it was for Los Tigres of the Mexican League. Chiasson ended the regular season tied for numero tres with 24 saves. He also had a 2.67 ERA and a .200 OBA in 48 games and 57.1 IP.

Chuck Huggins has had several shaky starts lately but is still 7-3 with a 3.67 ERA and a .239 OBA on the year at High-A.

Blake Maxwell is 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA in six games at Double-A.

After cruising at Triple-A, reliever Jeff Gogal is now cruising at Double-A. At Triple-A Gogal held a 0.00 ERA in 3.2 IP. Overall Gogal has a 1.23 ERA with 28 K's in 29.1 IP, most of which came in the FSL. But wherever he's worked, he's done his job well. Hitters are clunking along at a .194 average against Gogal.

Another fantastic job on the updates Osh +1k

After what I wrote a couple days ago, it's not a surprise: Yazy Arbelo was named the Northwest League (Short Season) Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Aug. 8. Arbelo leads the Northwest League in HR (11) and RBI (42 ... he leads by seven). He's also 2nd in SLG (.573), 2nd in OPS (.939) and 10th in 2B's (11). Here's the release.

And an additional story on Arbelo.

Not quite as obvious: Jason Hirsh was named the International League (Triple-A) Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Aug 8. Here's that release.

Not be ignored despite me forgetting to check the awards last week, Zach Lutz was named the Eastern League (Double-A) Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Aug. 1. The release is below.

Casey Lawrence has gone from a NDFA to an all-star. Lawrence was one of 10 pitchers named to the American League affiliate team in the New York-Penn League (Short Season). Lawrence, the only D3'er selected, is fourth in the league with a .90 WHIP, fourth with a 1.90 ERA and tied for fifth with five wins.

There's a decent chance, according to a release I read, that Lawrence will start the game on Aug. 17.

The latest D3 signing is Cortland P Nicolas Blanco (Royals).

This... is a simple game. You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.  "There are three types of baseball players: those who make things happen, those who watch it happen, and those who wonder what happened."

Actually they are #1 & #2 of active pitchers in the league as the player listed first had his contract rights bought by the Red Sox on July 15th.

Another former D3 pitcher Andy Clark from Franklin College(HCAC) is #10 in ERA in the same league.

Below is his stat line and game log:

Jordan Zimmerman (UW-Stevens Point) has been recalled by the Washington Nationals and will make his MLB season debut vs St. Louis. He had elbow surgery last August.

According to what I read, he is taking Stephen Strasburg's place in the rotation.  Semi-good news for the Nats, since supposedly the TWO of them are the pitching future of the team.

OshDude

Cole Kimball was the only former D3'er selected to play in the prestigious Arizona Fall league, according to the initial rosters. Kimball will pitch for Scottsdale.

Former UW Oshkosh catcher Casey Kopitzke will manage the Mesa club.
