Ironic that it came against the Twins, who should have moved heaven and earth to sign a potential ace from relatively close to the Twin Cities.

Ironic, also, that Minnesota is threatening to be the worst team (currently 10-30) since the 2003 Tigers (the Twins won the division that year, while the Tigers avoided being the all-time worst team - they finished with 119 losses - only because they swept the final series against, yes, the Twins). ;)

Official scoring can be so cruel (and misleading) sometimes.  Pat Dean took the loss despite being infinitely more effective than Berrios (5.1 innings of 2-run ball vs. 0.2 innings of 7-run ball), while Zimmermann stunk up the joint and gets the win. ::)

It has nothing to do with official scoring. It has to do with the win statistic being utterly useless

I don't think that's particularly ironic at all except for the oddity re: the Tigers. The Twins were going to be pretty bad this year, they started out the season talking about how Molitor was going to have to get used to strikeouts. Not a great sign.

Mr. Ypsi

Jordan Z. had to leave Sunday's game in the 6th inning with a groin pull.  (The bull pen stepped up and preserved his 7th victory - he had been great to that point.)  Fortunately, the MRI suggested it was not nearly as bad as feared, and the Tigers have not put him on the DL.  They have an off day on Thursday, so they can rest him one start without having to find a replacement.  Miggy also left the game early after behind hit on the left knee by a pitch; I was pleasantly surprised he even played on Monday, then ecstatic when he merely had two HRs and a double!

Here's hoping that Jordan misses only one start, as (except for Miggy, and perhaps Verlander - who after a horrid April is becoming the Justin of old [he's got a 2-hit shutout thru six tonight]) Zimmermann if probably the player they can LEAST afford to lose for any extended period.

Mr. Ypsi

Well, Jordan did miss only one start.  Today was not vintage (5.2 innings, 2 earned runs) and he was pulled with a lower pitch count than usual (a precaution due to the groin strain?), but he left with a 3-2 lead, so it is up to the bullpen (and the hitters) whether he gets his 8th win or a 'no decision'.

The bullpen held (and the hitters produced) - he gets his 8th win as the Tigers win 10-3.

WAY too early to speculate on post-season awards, but at 8-2, 2.58, he is obviously an early candidate for Cy Young.  I'm guessing that would be a first for a D3 guy?

Mr. Ypsi

Alas, the batters did not bail out Jordan today in his shortest start as a Tiger.  He went 4.2 innings, yielding 7 runs (all earned) and suffered his third loss, 7-2.  His ERA jumped to 3.30.  I'm hoping (and cautiously optimistic) that ultimately his season will be closer to April (5-0, 0.55) than recently (last thirty days, 2-3, 6.30).  May he do a reverse Verlander, who absolutely stunk in April, but has looked like a Cy Young candidate lately, or like rookie Mike Fulmer, who over the last thirty days has the AL lead in ERA and is undefeated - in fact, he is the first Tiger pitcher (rookie OR veteran) to ever have three consecutive shutout starts with three hits or less over 6+ innings.

Mr. Ypsi

On Sunday, Mike Fulmer became only the second MLB pitcher ever to have four straight starts of 6+ shutout innings with 3 or fewer hits (Arietta of the Cubs beat him by a few weeks by doing it the last three games of 2015 and opening day this year).

Back to D3: Jordan Zimmermann was not prime tonight (6 runs, 4 earned, in seven innings), but he did move to 9-3 as the bats came alive in an 11-8 win.  His ERA keeps rising, but is a still respectable 3.46.

Also saw that Lake Bachar (UW-Whitewater) has been assigned to the Tri-City Dust Devils (short season-A for SD). Any word on the other D3 draft guys? Or additional players getting post-draft interest/signings?

Is there a running list of former D3 players in the minor leagues, maybe at full A or higher? Those guys are fun to follow, regardless of any tie to them.

I'd be happy to during some free time. Recommendations on how to collect this data?

That may be but that list is so old that it's probably a hindrance more than a help.

I would probably recommend using baseball reference's draft index, searching by state, and then scanning the far right side for names of schools that are D3 (or just search for a particular school, but you'll probably miss players that way). Then look to see if they're still active.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/draft/?query_type=came_from&came_from=OH&

This would miss the players that went into affiliated ball from the independent leagues (like Mike Demark and Mark Williams), and I don't have as easy a solution on those. You'd also miss players like Charlie Furbush and Ryan Dennick that started at D3 schools before finishing at different programs (Dennick went from D3 to JUCO to D1). But I don't have as good an answer on how to clean that up.
