Congrats to Carroll's Crystal Hoewisch for being named to the d3hoops.com 1st team All-America!  She continues to amaze and we all can't wait for another great season!  Also congrats to Carroll and Lake Forest for being named in the pre-season top 25 polls, bringing some more national recognition to the MWC along with Hoewisch!

Good Luck to all MWC teams as play opens this weekend.

Lawrence won new coach Walsh's debut at Lawrence in a rout of Clarkson 73-45.  They then lost a close one to host North Central 61-59.  Anyway, good start to the season.  I think LU has a good mix of veteran leaders and a promising group of freshman.

Congrats to LU for getting their first conference win over Knox yesterday.  Although the beginning of the season appeared promising, LU has fallen on hard times recently.  I think they are hurting from the loss of the on-the-floor leadership provided by guard Jenny Stoner who has been out with a wrist injury.  Hopefully, she'll come back soon and LU can make a push at the end of the season.

Since this seems to be the place for congratulations... Congrats to Allison Grubbs on her 3 team all decade selection.

I'll add another congrats.  Clearly, it's been a tough transition season for LU, but sophomore Caresse Reiland provided a bright spot yesterday by posting a triple double in LU's 66-51 loss to Monmouth.  16 points, 17 boards, and a school record 10 blocks.  Story here.

End of an era...Congrats Coach Slaats on a great season and an extraordinary 22 year run at Lake Forest!
You will be missed on the court...

You Lake Forest fans get a good coach in T Tills. I saw the NAthCon Tournament Semi-Final and she and the Cougar team were only a missed lay-up away from a berth in the Final. (Between '06-07 and '07-08, Concordia-Chicago improved greatly.)

MIDWEST CONFERENCE HISTORY BOOK: NO ORDINARY CONFERENCE

George Drake, a former Midwest Conference student-athlete and 1956 Grinnell College graduate, has culminated a project he calls "a labor of love" with the completion of the 100-page soft cover book No Ordinary Conference, an introspective history of the Midwest Conference. The Midwest Conference office is making the book available to the general public at a discounted price via the Order Form linked below for a limited time only (a small number of copies may be available at full price after the ship date). Orders are expected to ship in September.

Drake, who remains a professor at his alma mater, teamed with 2001 Grinnell grad John Aerni to provide a unique look at the league's history through interviews with Midwest Conference student-athletes and unprecedented access to league minutes.

No Ordinary Conference includes the accounts of numerous student-athletes and chronicles over 80 years of history from the league's formation through the men's and women's conference unification and beyond. No Ordinary Conference also features a 34-page photo gallery of some of the conference's all-time great athletes, coaches and administrators.

I have to admit I feel bad for Coach Gluckman (New WBB Coach for Grinnell). It will extremely difficult to be successful after getting a team who was middle of the pack w/o the highest scoring player in the conference the past four years. Hannah Wolf was an incredible all-around player who was the main reason for the wins that GC has had in the past four years. To lose her will be a frustrating start to Gluckman's head coaching career.

Lots of turnover in the coaching ranks this season... Marc Heidorf chosen to lead Lawrence, Knox Tabs Emily Cline As New Head Coach, Grinnell Names Kate Gluckman New Women's Basketball Coach and Tamlyn Tills Named Women's Basketball Coach At Lake Forest.  Who's got the best shot at succeeding in their first year?

If anyone's interested in the D-III regional volleyball tournaments, I have a fairly extensive blog that covers the St. Thomas and Oshkosh (where SNC will be) regionals. It's not bad in national terms, either. Stop by and tell me what you think.
