Geneva College is located in Beaver Falls, Pa (populaion about 9000) and is situated on the Beaver River, a tributary of the Ohio west of Pittsburgh. Joe Namath played for Beaver Falls High School. In Joe's time and presumably to today Beaver Falls High School has played its games on Geneva's field. Also Cal Hubbard, an original inductee in the Pro FB HOF, played at Geneva. There are memorabilia about Cal in Geneva's trophy case - at least there were about 15 years when I visited  Geneva to watch a DL play for Trinity International (not to be confused with Trinity University or Trinity College) against Geneva. A guy at the car rental counter at the Pittsburgh airport threw a hissy fit when I said to him that Cal was a better player than Joe.
I remembered that Cal Hubbard was the (Baseball HOF) major league umpire who had played football at Centenary College in Shreveport!

He played both at Centenary and at Geneva.

Yeah, as a 26 year old college student at Geneva!

It was a different era.

I appreciate the scientific analysis that Cal Hubbard brought to baseball officiating.

He may have been paid better by Centenary and Geneva than by the Giants and the Packers.

Frank, have you heard when did the concept of athletic scholarship began?

No, please tell.
I haven't heard either.  Unfortunately, my father and grandfather, who might know this are no longer living...

Dec, 1936.

I don't have a article pack feature, but the article talks about the "Western Conference".  :)

I am a parent of a future college student.  He is looking at DII and DIII schools across the country.  I have used the maps at Wikipedia to help locate schools.  The site did not have a map of DIII schools.  I found it very helpful, so I created one.  I am attaching it.  It is your to use on your site if you wish.  Other parents and students may find it useful. I used the programs listed at Wikipedia for the source of information.  The exact locations are approximate, but should be helpful.

Did you do a D2 football map, too?  I think they do a good job of filling in the upper midwest, even better than the NAIA.

Until 1987 officially known as the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives, it has popularly been known as the Western Conference, the
Big Nine, and the Big Ten, as it is now officially known.

I had an uncle now deceased, who played for Penn State in the early to mid 20s, and am of the impression that he was on "athletic scholarship" there.

Lou Gehrig attended Columbia from 1921 - 1923 on a football scholarship according to these websites:

http://www.lougehrig.com/about/bio.htm
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/mlb/features/1998/yankees/flashbacks/fall95.html

He scored his first collegiate touchdown against Ursinus College in a 48-3 victory.  He pitched in one of his earliest collegiate games against Williams (a 5-1 loss).

Mr. Ypsi

It will be interesting to see what you guys can dredge up about athletic scholarships, but I suspect it is a hopeless quest.  While the 'concept' is now well-defined (though not well understood as some hs coaches and sports writers still talk about the 'scholarship' players at d3 schools!), I'm almost certain that Fielding Yost had occasional 'ringers' back at the turn of the 20th century - aren't these, in effect, 'athletic scholarships' (and perhaps more 'honest' than O. J. Mayo :D)?

I made a Google map for all the D3 schools too.  Its unlocked and can be edited by anyone who wishes.

It does not have street addresses or conferences.  Feel free to edit away.
