If you want to play Stout style you better have either 5 bionic women or a deep bench.  Bionic women can be expensive so most teams go the deep bench route. :D

Last time I checked, all women were expensive - bionic or not... ;D

Is that a bad thing??? ???

Depth can be a very good thing, at least that's what I've been told... ;)

Champ-

I have no problem with the amount of players Stout has.  I just put that in my post because some past posters have made fun of that before.

I didn't mean to imply that you were sayin' that depth was a bad thing.  I understood from your "smiley" that you were pokin' fun.

That's why I had the ;) on my post.

In reality, I think many teams wish they had Stout's depth.

Perhaps not many ON Stout's bench...

If you've got talent, you will get minutes - even on Stout's bench.

It's not unusual for 10 or more players to get double digit minutes of playing time in a WIAC conference game.

It's what Coach T's style of play dictates and demands - and it's put them in the DIII tourney 4 out of the last 6 seasons.  Hard to argue with that kind of success... 8)

Right. With 22 players on the roster, 10 players getting double digit minutes means 12 players don't. There's plenty of talent in that group, too. But, sitting it out is their choice. Can't argue with that.

I'm always amazed at what those last 12 players are capable of; they get on the floor and they play good basketball. It's tough watching them marinate on the bench, when they should be on the floor pounding it out.

How many other WIAC teams regularly have 10 players with double digit minutes?

If your roster is 18 players, and only 7 of them get 10+ minutes of playing time - the playing time opportunity is better at Stout -  45% at Stout vs. 39% at school "X".

I've watched talented freshman join this team for years and get significant playing time.  I've also seen freshman join the team that took 1 - 2 years to develop and earn the right for that playing time.

I've also watched certain freshman develop into role players.  They many only get 4 - 8 minutes a game - but those minutes are critical to the success of the team.

Depth is not a bad thing.  Injuries happen.  If you have the talent and are prepared to step up, your playing time can increase overnight.

When I've seen Stout, I've always thought they generally have two decent units, but when they get to that third team it's pretty weak.  They usually come in and try to run faster than the first two units and kick the ball around like a soccer match.  But, I think Coach T is OK with that because he's resting his top two units and still forcing the other team to chase around his third unit, wearing them out.  Of course, when injuries happen he can pull from that third unit to fill holes and they do fine, but when the third unit is in as a whole they generally aren't very good.  Just my observation.

I know Stout has a "we play 18 kids a game" reputation, but generally in the games against really strong teams, Coach T shortens that bench up to a traditional 9-12 players.  I'm recalling some great battles against UWSP and Oshkosh (before the fall) when 10 kids might be all that see the floor, until the last few mop-up seconds.

D3Hoops.com preseason Top 25 poll is out.

http://www.d3hoops.com/top25/

WIAC represented by UW-Whitewater at 18, UW-Stevens Point at 24 and UW-Eau Claire receivng votes.

No UW-Stout at all??  I find that suprising.  I know they lost the top player in the league, but to not get a single mention on any ballot?  I don't agree with that.

It isn't unusual for the SIDs to simply pick last year's winner to be the favorite so Stout's droping to fourth may show how much of an impact losing Duoss has in the minds of the SIDs.   Of course how good the SIDs are at predicting the winner is a subject open to debate.  But it's interesting to see their reaction.

I'm really anxious to see the WARHAWK team this year.  We should be very competitive.

UWRF

Personally I think UWRF at 6 (9-7 conference rec)  is a pretty big stretch... they'll be lucky if they win 9 games all year.  They are going to struggle to find someone who can replace Preiner and/or Reimann.  And now with Flanscha gone its going to get really tough. I'll have a better feel for the team tonight after the intrasquad scrimmage and ill report back.

9-7 wasn't a prediction. It was last year's conference record.

Looking forward to hearing your update!
