#1815
Point trailed by 14 at the half and by 17 with 17min left, but comes from behind to defeat Point Loma 56-51.  Houghton carried Point down the stretch with 10 points in the last 4min of the game.

With the Point win, EC has no more regional games for the rest of the tournament.

buf

UWEC leads at the half over Ithaca, 42-18.  Ithaca has one player who is 4-7 from the field.  The rest of the team is 1-24.

buf

UWEC wins 72-46 over Ithaca.

Most likely they will have to play the host school, Point Loma, who Stevens Point squeeked by last night.

buf

UWEC loses its final game to the host Point Loma 71-51.  EC came within 3 points a few different times in the 2nd half, the last at the 12min mark.  Things unraveled quickly after that.  At the 12min mark EC was shooting 55% for the game and ended up at 42%.  Also, for the 2nd game in a row, EC turns it over at least 27 times.  For a small team that is guard oriented, I would think they would have to try and limit their turnovers to 15 or less.

Overall, this was not a good tournament for EC.  They go 1-2 and 0-1 in region.  I really thought this tournament was a good opportunity for them to get some quality in region games.  I was thinking that they would defeat both GAC and Carroll, and then hopefully play Point in the championship game, ending up the tournament at worst 2-1.

Point plays Carroll in the championship game at 6:00 central time.

Point wins over Carroll in the championship of the tournament out west, 84-60.

Whitewater wins big over Widener today.

The WARHAWKS settled the issue early with a 19-2 run to start the game and a 41-20 halftime lead.  Holding Widener scoreless for the the first 11:47 of the second half WHITEWATER buried them with another 23-0 run on way to a 73-42 win.  Nineteen WARHAWKS made the trip and all played with no starter playing longer than 18 minutes and no player longer than 24.  A stifling defense forced 36 Widener turnovers (16 steals) and held them to just 25% from the floor.    Lyndsey Buechner led all scorers with 18  points and Tiffany Morton recorded a double-double 12 points, 11 rebounds.  Meghan Schmidt also hit double figure scoring with 10 points as the WARHAWK bigs controlled the low post area and held a 48-37 rebounding advantage.

Today the 5th ranked, undefeated WARHAWKS matchup against undefeated, #1 ranked University of Mary Washington (Va.) on the neutral Irvine, Ca. court.

Halftime score

UW-Whitewater 35
Mary Washington 22

We sprung for the $8 to watch this thing on "Stretch Internet."

Unfortunately, no audio in any fashion to go along with video (technical issues...you'd think they'd tell you before you purchase).

Best observations I can make...

The UW-Whitewater players have long arms and that's caused disruption for Mary Washington in it's offense...having tough time both passing, shooting over the top of the defense. Whitewater has led whole way, and (I'm guessing here) I think the point guard (Hendrickson) is having a nice game. Little hard to tell though.

After leading comfortably theWARHAWKS ended up having to hold on for dear life.   But they do 70-67 and take down #1 ranked Mary Washington.

Sorry no details are available at this time.

I have a few...

Final
UW-Whitewater 70
Mary Washington 67

A really INSANE ending to this game.

Mary Washington was way behind...as much as 20 down in 2nd half, and to be honest, it was dominance from UW-Whitewater

But then, about 730 left, things took a major change...

Mary Washington started hitting some shots (including a couple 3's), and UW-Whitewater got a little tight.

I wasn't totally keeping notes, but I believe there was stretch in last 90 seconds in which UW-Whitewater was 2-8 on FT and Mary Washington made a couple 3's in a row, including one to tie game with 23 seconds left. Lack of audio and blurry video when blown up to reasonable size made it hard to tell who hit it.

UW-Whitewater got ball to point guard, Hendrickson, I believe, and Mary Washington tried to trap, ended up fouling her as she ducked through it. She made 1 of 2 FT.

Mary Washington got a look at a winning shot, but missed...UW-Whitewater made 2 FT with less than second left to account for final score.

Hopefully both schools will provide a thorough recap. Crazy game.

I think this says a lot about our league.  Whitewater beats the #1 team, and while they are tops in the WIAC right now, by no means are they head & shoulders above the other 8.  Point only lost by 4 on the road and I think Eau Claire (despite their tough showing in San Diego) can play right with them to.  I still predict the WIAC champ loses three league games this year.

I think next week, Whitewater should be 1 or 2 in the country and I'd bump UWSP all the way up to 4-7 based on their showing in San Diego and their result against Whitewater.

Congrats Whitewater! But, beware the burden of being a marked target!

Mr. Downtown

When was the last time a women's WIAC team was #1?

The last I can think of, was i think the 03/04 season when Oshkosh with Coach Pam Ruder, and the Junior Class of Brittney Herrick, Kelly O'Keefe, and Shannon Eggers got the nod.

Then they lost to some girl named Kelsey Duoss and UW-Stout...by 30...at Kolf.  ;D ;) ???

I think Whitewater should get SERIOUS consideration for #1.

buf

I am sure they will get at least some 1st place votes.  Not sure that they will rise to #1 though, especially if the teams above them win.

Jumping from 5 to 1, even by beating #1, is tough...unless 2-3-4 lose. That said, 16 first-place votes up for grabs, likely to be dispersed among Hope, Howard Payne, Whitewater and maybe NYU/Thomas More.

Jumping from 15 to top 5 (UWSP) also tough...albeit not unprecedented. But very few women's teams lost this week, so not much room for them to jump...good wins though.

Pat Coleman

Hope is really good. I think they'll be No. 1.
