Stout was cold as ice for the first 14 minutes of the game, but it was 29 - 6 with 6:05 left to go in the first half, not 29 - 4.... ;)

It was really strange to watch.  LaCrosse couldn't miss, and Stout couldn't seem to find the basket.  Then with less than 6 minutes to go in the first half, roles seem to reverse and the Runnin' Lady Blue Devils that I know got back on the floor and went on a 19 - 3 run to put the game back in reach at the half.

It took Stout 7 minutes into the first half to finally take the lead for the first time in the game.  They slowly and methodically built the lead up to as much as 8 points, and even with under a minute to play looked like they had everything under control with a 5 point lead.

Missed FT's on our part and three point plays on their part (due to shooters being fouled in the act of shooting) netted UWL a one point lead with about 10 seconds on the clock.

We inbounded, but they trapped our guard as she was bringing the ball down court.  Coach T called a TO with 3.2 seconds left.

Joanna Bird inbounded the ball to Lindsey Geissler, who drove hard to the basket.  As she approached for the layup, the defenders under the basket took a step away from Julia Hirssig.  With moments left on the clock, Geissler feeds the ball to Hirssig who goes up and sinks the bunny shot with no time remaining!!!

Much more excitement than I needed... ;D

UWL played very hard - and you could see the pain and frustration in their faces at the buzzer.  Hats off the the Lady Eagles for a great effort!

Thoughts on the Blugold/Whitewater game -

As the senior leader, Michelle Burns willed the 'Golds to the win; she scored all of her 13 points in the second half... Missy Fremstad hit two clutch shots down the stretch, too - a two-pointer to tie it at 55, and a 3 to put the 'Golds up 58-57...

Nice balance overall for UWEC in stats: Heather Witt chipped in 9 points and led the team with 8 rebounds. Amanda Zenner had 9 points as well, with 7 boards. But two key stats - the leading scorer, Heidi Arciszewski, was held to but two points... and,

this leads to the player of the game, in my opinion - UWEC's Hannah Mesick, a freshman, who led the team in scoring with 16... It seemed as if they were determined to get her involved in the post, and she responded big time, especially early in the game, as UWEC jumped to a 29-19 lead at half... Her scoring helped take a load off the void created by the near shutout pitched against Arciszewski, who did pull down 7 boards...

Kelsey Hendrickson and Lindsey Buechner each had 11 for the 'Hawks; Dana Thompson had 7 boards...

Tidbit of the day - Whitewater has not won at Zorn since Feb. 21, 1987... Ugly stat -Golds had 23 turnovers, vs. just 11 for Whitewater... Congrats and thanks of the day to the man behind the mic for UWEC sports, who is now celebrating 33 years of giving us UWEC fans "Gold wraps," and reminding us of the many days when it's good to be a Blugold...

Golds move to 11-3, and 5-0 in conference. Warhawks are now 14-1 and 5-1... But still a long ways to go in the race. I just get the feeling that the winner of the conference is not going to have one loss, or less, though...  ;)

For those keeping score at home -

Here's a breakdown of attendance for yesterday's games:

UWSP men had 642 fans, vs. 1344 average attendance before that game; women had 224 vs. 429 average... (played Platteville)

UW Stout men drew 310, vs. 606, while the women, who averaged 535 prior to the start, had 435 fans... (Played La Crosse)

Superior drew 358 fans for the men's game, vs. a 130 average; the women had 124, compared to 52... (Played Oshkosh)

UWEC men drew 473, vs. 467 average... while the women, averaging 560 prior to tipoff, drew 473 as well... (Played Whitewater)

Draw your own conclusions, but methinks the Packer playoff game did have a negative impact on a few teams' coffers yesterday...

Congrats to EC.  Looks like our offensive machine blew a gasket in the first half.

Have to put it behind us and rebound with a win over Stout this Saturday.

You coming down, Champ?  Unfortunately I'm going to have to miss it, damned bowling Saturdays.  I hate them but Mrs BD thinks they're fun.  grrrrrr.........

I'd like tocome down and see the Runnin' Lady Blue Devils steal a win from your team, but I'll be flying out to CA Thursday after work for a 4 day weekend in the wine country out there...  Mrs. Champ is finishing up a 10 day project out there, so our only real cost for the trip is what we eat and drink... ;D

Frequent flyer miles, hotel loyalty rewards, etc. can be a wonderful thing!!!

Any chance of you coming up to Menomonie for the rematch?

EC must post the same attendance for men and women for the doubleheaders.  There were way more fans for the women's game than the men's.

WW drops from #2 to #4 in the DIII poll.  Point moves up one notch to #10.  UWEC remains just outside the top 25.

The Lady Devils get to play two teams in the top 10 in the country this week... :o

The WARHAWKS have gained a future recruit.  But this recruit will have to play for Pat Miller.  The WARHAWK WORLD welcomes Matthew Gary Carollo born yesterday.  At 8 lbs 13 oz and 20.5" Matthew's position is undetermined.

Congrats to Joe, Coach Keri.

That's great news that Keri and Joe's new baby boy has arrived.  But the rumor up here is that he's going to attend Stout... ;D

Joe - Keri... If you're reading this - Congratulations from the Champ's!!!

Good win for Superior.  I really thought that they would not win a conference game this season.

You weren't alone. I think I could see where the description of Superior women's play as "disorganized" might come from: Mulhern is running up and down in front of the bench bellowing like a walrus throughout the game. Like these women don't have enough to concentrate on and he's screaming at them from tip-off to buzzer. I was sort of hoping he'd get tossed; women might have been able to play basketball.

Voice of the Titans

Few thoughts from the EC/UWO game.

Solid gameplan from the start for UWO. SLow the tempo down, pick the good shots, and minimize turnovers. For the first half, they did what the needed to do. Unfortunately, they couldn't shoot 48% for the whole game, and the turnovers mounted in the second half. Burns was a monster the whole game. Played smart down in the post when it was obvious that 3 seconds would not be called, and just tortured UWO inside. EC is a solid team, but UWO competed the entire 40 minutes for such a young roster.

On a side note, mad props to the EC fan (with his binoculars in hand) who sought me out after the game for "running the clock wrong", even though I just do the PA. According to him, the clock should start immediately after a made FT, not when it rolls all the way to half court, even though no one touched it. Added a few needless obscenities in there, just to show how smart he was. EC fans, I know not all of you are like that (though every call was "terrible" according to most Blugolders in the stands. Don't the refs know that EC never does anything wrong?), but this guy was your delegate for the night.

Any bets on who will be the first to knock off EC?
We started that WRST Sports sh**.

After a made FT?  Why would he think it wouldn't start when it's inbounded.  That's crazy talk.
