Don't remind me of that year...

Point didn't win the WIAC Championship, and didn't even get to the WIAC Tournament Championship game - yet made the NCAA Tourney got a home game to start the DIII tourney.  Three out of four games to start the tourney were at home....

Stout won the conference and the tournament, then had to go on the road to St. Ben's - who didn't win the MIAC Tournament... ???

Not sayin' that Stout would have gone all the way, but it's still a mystery to me how Point played at home that year and Stout was forced to play on the road... ::)

I would think Stout would have preferred to go to St. Bens to play their first game then to take Point's road.  Point won a home game to start to the tourny, but then had to travel to Wash U.  Stout played at Wash U. that year in November and lost by over 50.

Totally forgot about that...I would have been pretty mad too if I were from Stout. That sure was fun to watch that year. There were some pretty awesome teams that year, as always!

Just Bill

I think the frustration over the brackets in 2002 ended up distracting Stout from the fact that they actually had a game to play.  I think they were so sure they were getting a home game that they were a little too busy being angry and weren't quite ready to go when the ball tipped.  Just what I've gathered from talking to the Stout staff at the time.

No doubt St. Ben's was also an excellent team, so I'm sure that was the biggest factor.

Once again, Oshkosh is giving everything they have to Point.

33-31 SP with 18:35 left to go.

...but it wasn't enough. Point finally gets strict on the defensive end and rolls by 25 or so. Gotta hand it to Zero though for putting up a fight. Watching this you were wondering how long Point was going to let them hang. Oshkosh puts up a 10-0 run and eliminates a 17 point lead in the second half to 7 and people were gritting their teeth.

Neuenfeldt and several players off the bench put a stop to that and the rest is history. Sad to see Tyriver end her career...would have been nice to see her play for someone better than Oshkosh.

Final Four...gonna be some fighting on Thursday! I'm taking Stout over EC at the Zorn and simply calling a toss up to WW/Point. It's war folks...

EC wins 73-43 over RF.  EC jumps out to a 23-5 lead, but then goes dry for a long stretch as RF comes to within 8.  Rachel Mueg. hits a 3 to end the half, putting EC up 31-19.  EC totally controls the 2nd half and is never threatened.

Player of the game is Rachel Mueg.  She set a school record by hitting 9 3-pointers.  She was 9-11 from 3, her last one being an NBA range 3.

It looks like EC will face Stout, who wins over UWL 65-63 in OT.

Countdown until someone gets home from the Stout game to answer me two questions I have from watching the Stout-La Crosse game on live stats.

1- What was the foul called on Hunter with four seconds left in regulation. And, with no bias, good call or not?
2- What happened on the game winner? Said Stout timeout with :00 left so I'm assuming there were tenths remaining ... what kind of inbound play and what kind of shot.

Blue Devil Backer

Hunters foul with 4 sec to go was a charge at half court when she was driving and was air boren

-The last shot was a out- of - bounds play with 0.05 second on the clock a pass to Char in the lane

Unreal ending at Stout.  I read about it being a lob pass to Edwards in the lane.  I am curious is LAX put someone big on the ball and if they flooded the lane to protect against this pass.  I would guess not, but I have no idea.

Blue Devil Backer

ya it was .5 seconds lax had hunter on the ball and char took a 8 ft jumper form a lob

#1- Good call. You know me billys, I'm not biased.  ;)

#2- Perfect lob into Edwards who took it at the top of her leap and tossed it in. Happened right in front of me. Awesome play.

I too, being totally unbiased... ;)

Hunter was going ninety miles an hour and just bowled over the opposition.  Very solid call.  I thought Coach Hereen was going to get T'd up after the whistle.  She ran out on the floor and was verbally attacking the refs...   Not sure how or why she had anything to complain about.

Sitting in the stands, when I saw Charlee go and check in, I said to my wife - Char's going to get the ball.  The girl is lighting fast, elevates real well, and is a solid shooter.  This is just a guess, but I think maybe UWL remember the first game when the inbound pass went to Hirssig in the same situation to win that game at the buzzer by one point.

Talking with Coach T after the game, they had just put that play to Charlee into the offense before the game and had run it maybe 2 or 3 times.  The team (as a group) suggested that be their play during the TO with .05 remaining...

Both teams were just terrible at shooting in the first half.  UWL shot 24% (6 of 25) and Stout 21% (8 of 38) in the first session.  The difference was in the FT's with UWL making 10 of 13 and Stout sinking 3 of 5 - score 22 - 20 UWL at the half.  Sidenote to the first half, Julia Hirssig - the WIAC leading scorer, was held scoreless in the first half for the first time this year.

Both squads improved their shooting from the field in the second half (couldn't have done much worse... ;)) - UWL upto 56% and Stout at 38%.  FT's balanced out somewhat in the second period with LaCrosse making 7 of 10 and Stout netting 10 of 14.

A true defensive battle in the OT, with only 10 points being scored in the 5 minute session - and 2 for each team were from the FT line...

Hirssig was the top scorer with 20 points (all in the second half and OT, and also led all rebounders with 17.  Edwards not only scored the game winner, but added 17 points for the evening.  Mandy Stevens led UWL with 18 points and Mackenzie Hunter had 15 points and 7 boards.

Next up, UWEC...

If it's possible last night's 93-53 win was even uglier than the score suggests.  Platteville couldn't shoot (31% on the game), couldn't control the ball (37 turnovers) and couldn't throw it to us fast enough (18 steals).   Defensively they had big problems with the quickness of our perimeter players and the size of our posts.  Wubben was the only Pioneer in double figures with 18 points.

Sophomore Dana Thompson led the WARHAWKS in scoring with 17 points.  Heidi Sontang added 15 points, Tiffany Morton 12 points and Kelsey Hendrickson 11 points as we were able to score from inside and out relatively easily.  Twenty players saw action and twelve of them scored.  It was the 10th time this season in which the offensive has score 90 or more points.

Next up, the Pointer.  I have a feeling that won't be quite as easy.  :D    Seriously, it should be a good one.  The two teams are both playing well.

Good luck to your BD, Champ.

Rachel Mueg.s performance last night was unbelievable.  9 threes; most of which were from steps behind the 3-point line.

She hit one with Tess Lardie right in her face, not sure how she even had enough room to get a shot off.

Top 3 Rachel Mueg 3-Pointers from Last Night:  :D

3. "The School Record Breaker": Right in front of the Blugold bench for number 8.

2. "The Momentum Swingers": Back-to-Back threes in the last minute of the 1st Half to kill RFs momentum and put EC back up by 12 at the break.

1. "She couldnt Guard Herself": Her final 3 of the night.  Krystal Parr was right in her face but in a stroke of bad luck lost her balance and fell to the floor leaving Mueg wide open from 25 feet... of course she drained it.

This week's regional rankings:

Central Region
1.  Wis.-Whitewater  21-2  23-2
2.  Wis.-Eau Claire  18-4  20-5
3.  Wis.-Stevens Point  20-4  21-4
4.  Ill. Wesleyan  20-2  23-2
5.  Washington-St. Louis  15-4  18-6
6.  Chicago  17-5  19-5

Gee, it looks a whole lot like last weeks.  I do think that 2-6 are bunched pretty close together.  Meaning, lets say EC or Point loses this week.  They could very easily fall to #6.  Wash U does play Chicago this week, so one of those teams will pick up a loss.

HCACBBALL

Looks like a good one between UWSP and Whitewater.  That should be a battle.
