Because there's no place else to put it, I'll congratulate the UW-Superior women's hockey team on their win at and over Gustavus Adophus yesterday, which puts them on the bracket path to the NCAA DIII Women's Frozen Four.

Was the attendance in the paper correct for Saturday?  453?  That's really sad.

UWSP women drew over 1,600 each year they hosted the sectional final.  Where was everyone?

1.)  It's Whitewater
2.) It's WOMEN'S basketball

Remember, Whitewater failed to sellout any of their games the two years the men hosted regionals, this year and two years ago.  They didn't even sell out their WIAC Final against Point.  Obviously, the women are even worse.  I don't expect 1600 for women's basketball in too many places, but 1000 probably isn't out of the question, especially at home.  The two games the Whitewater women played?  Simpson, seems like they are always a powerhouse, and DePauw, defending National Champions.

Isn't it right what they say about Whiteater that it is a suit case college? On Friday night Matt Goodwin and Rob Perry were in the building and on Saturday nights game, I noticed Perry on the sidelines cheering...

I get that Whitewater isn't quite as hoop-crazy as Point, but to not even reach half a thousand?  That's really poor.

Stevens Point, Eau Claire and Stout women all AVERAGED more than 453.  Whitewater itself averages a little over 400.  I just can't believe the lure of a Sectional Final against the defending national champion couldn't account for more than 50 fans over their average.

Perhaps what's-his-name wasn't willing to buy free student tickets for this game like he did for the football playoffs.

His name is David Kachel, Pat.   He also provided free tickets to the students for the last two conference tournament games.

I don't have any answers but I can say that we were very disappointed.  We've put very good teams on the floor and done a lot of winning.  We've hosted the most significant game in our women's program since god only knows when yet the overwhelming majority of our student body remains disinterested.  I just don't get it.

It is interesting that the thing you all are most interested in discussing is our attendance.  Anybody want to talk about the team or doesn't that interest you.

Why don't you tell us a little more about the team instead, then?

Don't lump me in that group...  I posted the team picture and the picture of the coach I thought should be COY.

It sure must have been a thriller to watch your squad score the last 5 points of the game to defeat the defending national champs!!!

Do you think there is some jealously going on.... ???

Like BW, I'm just disappointed a great team can't get better support.  I knew it wasn't as good in Whitewater as other places, but I didn't realize it was that bad.  I don't think that knocks the UWW team in any way.

The point of our posts have nothing to do with the team.  I've seen them play this year, and in the past.  I'll tell you that the Point v Whitewater WIAC tourney semi was one of the best games I've seen this year, men or women.  It was really exciting and it is too bad that a great team like that can't get more support from it's fans, student or not.

Maybe Whitewater, like Oshkosh, is a suitcase school, but I also know they like to drink.  Maybe they are just more interested in drinking.  Of course, I'm not sure if that explains why the general public can't come out and support the team.

And, it would've been interesting to take a survey and ask the 400 fans there if they even knew that DePauw was the defending National Champs.

The women's championship game will be on CSTV on Saturday....as will the DI women's championship hockey game...hopefully it will be a Warhawk and Badger double-header

Speaking of the team,  I sure hope the Warhawks can hit their free throws and take care of the ball better than they did against Depauw

Speaking of attendance, even at Madison the women's games are sparsely attended by students...more attend the volleyball games, which also seems to be true at Whitewater

What about attendance at the women's final four? Looking at the Hope website it seems like almost all of the tickets have been sold...but maybe most were bought by Hope fans so hopefully their fans will support the event even though their team is not in it anymore

No, actually I think I was probably a tad over sensitive.   I'm frustrated by the lack of support as well.   My background and lifestyle are very sports oriented and I think it prevents me from understanding what in the world could be more interesting on campus right now than the women's basketball team.

We won this weekend despite turnovers and horrible free throw shooting because we were stronger in the post and deeper off the bench.  It's not just a matter of numbers but the talent level of the substitutes and ours were better.

The NCAA's assignment of officials was also interesting.  On Friday both crews had no connection to the teams participating but on Saturday night for the championship game all three were WIAC officials.   I'd seen two of them in our gym during the regular season and the third was from LaCrosse.  I'm not criticizing them in any way, they were fine, I just thought the NCAA tried to avoid that.

Next weekend the whole thing starts all over and I've heard DLK is footing the bill for a bus or two.  Though with the semester break starting Friday I don't know how well we'll travel.

Here's the deal with officials: They all work in more than one league.  So, the NCAA will look at who is playing and then ask a local conference to provide their best crew.  So with UWW and DePauw, they might ask for MWC refs (just an example, I don't which conference provided them).  With two conferences nearby it's very possible that the three MWC refs assigned might also happen to be WIAC refs. They might also happen to be NAC or CCIW refs too.
