Morton finished with 19pts and 21rebs in only 20 minutes of playing time.

Congrats to Tiffany Morton for making the All Tournament Team

BTW, Howard Payne just won the national championship over Messiah, 68-54.

Oglethorpe? If WW couldn't beat a team with a name like that, I would never watch another game. Oglethorpe!?
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.

To me, Oglethorpe is somewhat normal compared to their nickname...the Stormy Petrels?  I always thought of myself as being aquainted with finer things in art and sciences, but, what's that all about?

Be interesting to see how WW bounces back today and plays the 3rd place game.

UWW wins 80-67, ends its season on a winning note.  Ties the D3 tournament rebounding record with 69 rebs today.

To answer your question U24, I guess they decided a little rebounding might be a winning formula!  ;)

Well, I'm back from Holland safe and sound.  OS, you're lucky you didn't ride along.  The drive over was miserable.  What took under just over four hours to drive home took over 7 hours going over including a two mile stretch that took just under an hour by itself.  I saw two cars which had rolled and at least another dozen that had slid into ditches.  It was nasty.   Anyway Saturday was a nice day.

What an incredible facility the DeVos Center is.  When I read it only sat 3700 or so I didn't think it would be that impressive despite photos that I'd seen.  But, boy, was I ever wrong.  It is really impressive and when you walk in and look down onto the floor from the concourse you get the feel of being in a big time arena.    There isn't a bad seat in the house either.   The heated sidewalks around the building and grounds are cool too.   I heard they had them downtown but I didn't get out a whole lot what with the NCAA's on TV and nursing a nagging cold.

Friday:
Howard Payne was really good.   They had good size, we're quick and very athletic.  They were tenacious defensively and we really struggled at times trying to get into our offense.  We made some stupid mistakes but a fair share were caused by the pressure they were applying.   Turnovers really killed us though.  Our free throw shooting the entire tournament was horrible.  In this game is was obscene.   We couldn't have thrown a ball in the Pacific Ocean.   Nobody has beaten us on the offensive boards like they did all season.  Blalock was tough and they had some leapers too.  Our focus wasn't good either we just didn't block out decently.   It was a disappointing loss but at least it was to a very good team.  Mia Daniels is the real deal too.  Every single time we started to close the gap she answered.  She was a legit POY

Saturday:
My day didn't start well.  My car was parked up to it's undercarriage in snow and a front tire was flat.  Then after changing it and heading off to WalMart to get the flat repaired I got a half a block and my spare was flat.   So I'm walking up Hwy31 and a guy pulls over and offers me a ride.  I go to get in and his door won't open.  Then he's going to call Triple A for me but his cell phone won't work.  So I finally get in his back seat and he's going to run me to a hotel where I'll call a tower.   When we get there his back door won't open until he gets out and opens from outside.   Things got better though.  The tow was only $65 and he towed me to a place, Discount Tires, that actually does repairs for free even if you aren't a prior customer and they didn't sell you the tires.  They fixed both of the tires.

Olgethrope didn't look like that good of a team on Friday vs Messiah.  They shot poorly, had no size  and turned it over alot.   Messiah got open look after open look.  But they played much better on Saturday.   They were able to beat us up the floor several times to get easy and uncontested layups.   And again we turned it over alot particularly in the first half.  Though we were controlling the boards and at times in the first half appeared to be taking control they never gave an inch and when we got really sloppy over the course of the last few minutes of the first half they made a run and put a scare into everyone in purple.    After a sloppy start to the second half we settled down, took better care of the ball and started pounding it inside where we could dominate.  With a significant size advantage we were all over the rebounds on both ends of the court.  The team tied an NCAA record with 69 total rebounds and Morton (21) missed the tying the individual record by two.

NCAA Division III can be forgiving and it gives two teams a chance to end on a winning note.  While it was disappointing to lose Friday, Saturday's victory was very satisfying and it's hard to stay disappointed by what has arguably been the best season of women's basketball at UW-W in two decades if not all time.   It was a heck of a good ride and to the seniors (Lyndsey B, Trisha T and Shannon M.) thanks for all of your efforts.  You can all be proud to have played a part in starting a tradition of winning at UW-W.   Thanks again and good luck to you in the future.

BW,

Thanks for the report... I was listening albeit hard on the radio.... Free throws, turnovers and rebounds were the Lady Warhawks achilles heel on Friday... If I'm not mistaken, they outshot Howard Payne..... Sorry to hear about your auto troubles... Bottome line you got there and back safe and sound.

Congrats to the Warhawks on a mighty fine season, going down in the record  books as one of the best, if not the, in school history...

After a loss on Friday, teams sometimes have to guard against a letdown in playing a third-place game on Saturday.

But the Hawks were apparently fired up and ready to play, posting a tournament record of 69 rebounds. Rebounding is an attitude. That effort was an impressive display, and says something about the character of the team...

Initially I had no idea what a Petrel was and couldn't make head nor tails out of the slogan "Give them the BIRD" that I noticed their fans wearing.  :D

Hey BW,

Thanks for the update.  Obviously you decided not to take the bus!  Oops.

Glad things finally worked out for you.  3 seniors gone, is WW going to continue to be a WIAC power?

Point loses some pretty good players, I know that.

Until next year...

I would imagine that they would be the favorites next year in conference.  Both Point and EC lose more from their teams than does UWW.

I'm very excited about the potential for next year's team.  Whether it's a conference power remains to be seen but on paper it will be a very, very competitive team.  We lose two seniors of significance (Buechner & Thill).  Both will be hard to replace however we already have the players to do it in place.   So basically we'll need to replenish some of our backups next year and we have some talented freshmen who didn't get a lot of playing time this year.   Games aren't played on paper obviously and it takes some breaks here and there to repeat but we should be a good position to make a run at it.
