Greek Tragedy

Point loses a lot more than I thought they did.

Neuenfeldt-9.8/3.8
Houghton-12.5 pts/3.6 reb.
Kranz-9.6/4.1

Nicastro
Heuer

The first three were the three top scorers and 3 of the top 4 rebounders.  Nicastro and Heuer both averaged 4.6 pts a game.

Kranz was always one of my favorite Pointers the last several years.

Graduation losses for Stout:

Starters

Lindsey Geissler - 8.6pts/2.1rbds/27.7mins

Joanna Bird - 5.7/1/20.4

Reserves

Mary Schaefer - 3.1/1.7/12.6

All three are guards, so we return all of our "bigs" - including Julia Hirssig, Dani Boese, Trish VanVrede, Megan Maslowski, Shelby Churchill and Danielle DeWitt.

I think that Lindsey Gerber and Kim Stokke join Hirssig, Boese and Charlee Edwards as the starters.   Maybe the Wyngaard sisters pick up the playing time off the bench for Gerber and Stokke - or maybe some of the other current freshman or one of the 2008 recruits.

Have to see how all these players mesh in their new roles for the 2008/2009 season.  But I'm optimistic that, although we'll miss our seniors, the winning tradition at Stout will continue.

It is my opinion that it is harder to replace a starting backcourt than a starting frontcourt since they have the ball in their hands so often.  I think that PG is the most important position on the court by far.  Teams with great PGs can usually do some damage in the NCAAs, that is if the rest of their players have some skill and it is not just a one person show.

I won't argue that the back court is important - they are.

But the two of our 3 starting guards graduated - that's a fact.  I'm happy that we have 2 younger guards that had significant playing time the last two seasons at Stout to hopefully step up and fill those two slots.

Maybe I didn't state it well, but my point was that we return ALL of our front court - meaning that the whole front court crew has 1 more year of experience and hopefully an improved game.

Oh I didn't mean that Stout will fall off the map.  I was just stating I think good guards are the key to good basketball teams.  It will help that some of their guards got some good playing team last season and aren't all new to the WIAC scene.  Most teams that lose their starting backcourt don't have players the level of Edwards, Bose, and Hirssig in the frontcourt.  In my opinion, Stout will be fine.

I appreciate your sentiment that Stout will be fine.  But to clarify the backcourt issue, as I stated in my previous post, "But the two of our 3 starting guards graduated - that's a fact".

Charlee Edwards was one of the 3 starting guards.  I understand that in theory, the game of BB has 2 forwards, a center and 2 guards - but that isn't the way it actually is at Stout.

Anybody got any information on recruits coming in?  I was watching some state games a couple weeks ago and am interested to hear if anyone is going to be playing in the WIAC.

Katie Pospishil (EC Memorial), 6-1 C, is planning on attending UWEC

Stacey Van Handel (Freedom) PROBABLY to either UWO or UWL.  I was really impressed with her at the state tournament.  Could be a huge impact player in the WIAC.  Kind of reminds me of Jayme Anderson in the way she plays.

Thats about all I have seen so far for recruits

Thats good to know.  Wasn't she a second team all state pick?  I thought she would have gone somewhere with scholarships the way she was playing in March.

She still may get a scholarship offer.  Playing well at the state tourney certainly will open the eyes of some coaches.  I was reading a state tourney preview and was really impressed by her pts/rebs a game and also noticed that she was 6'0".  I assumed she was going to a D3 school because she was a post player (Hard to get scholarships if you are a 6' post player).  But I was surprised when a saw her play (more of a slasher).  As a result, I was really surprised that she wasn't going to a D2 or low D1 school.

Van Handel is probably a perfect fit for the WIAC. She's definitely not 6'0" tall (probably 5'10) and isn't a great shooter from the perimeter so she would be a major tweener at a scholarship school. In the WIAC she can play the 3/4 comfortably though and still have the ability to rebound like she could do in high school.

That state tournament appearance definitely got her the All-State accolades but she's definitely not among the top ten college prospects in the state.

Definitely would be best served to go to UWO or UWL ... preferably UWL  ;)

Tough news out of UW-Stout today. Three students die in an off-campus house fire.

Certainly tough to deal with. Prayers and toughts are with the UW-Stout community!

RE: All Northwest HS team players -
The Leader-Telegram confirmed yesterday that Tiffany Gregorich, Altoona, will be attending UW-River Falls... Scored more than 1,000 points during her four years as a Railroader...

Coming from someone who has never been in Wisconsin, I have a question concerning the recruits to the DIII schools. Do the best high school girls typically attend and play for the DIII college? Or do the DIII just get those who can't play at a higher level?

I live in Texas and my niece plays in the SLIAC. I know there was zero chance of her playing DI, but she is ok in D3. And Texas puts out tons of kids that play D1. But the best players go D1.

Just wondering.
