It is with much saddness that I report the sudden passing of Coach Pete Von Allmen who was found in his home on Friday.  Pete was 65.  He was one of the winningest girl's high school coaches in Wisconsin and a member of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association's Hall of Fame.  He coached 18 years at Hartland Arrowhead turning them into a state powerhouse and winning two D1 state championships in the process.  Then he coached 10 seasons at Fort Atkinson High School were he won 3 conference championships.  Following that he spent two years as an assistant at Beloit College and the past four years as an assistant for the WARHAWKS.  As I had reported here earlier he planned on joining UW-Oshkosh's staff for the upcoming season.

He was a good guy and I considered him a good friend.  He'll be missed.  RIP, Pete.

Welp I say it looks like this for 2009-2010:

1.   Point (great coaching always finds a way)
2.   Stout (alot of 'ifs' here - got to love Julie H - hopefully Mark plays her full-time)
3.   EC (too much height - could surprise if guards arise and Plendl matures enough)
4    Whitewater (just don't know here)
5.   River Falls    (could go a long way based upon last years end)
6.   La Crosse    (just don't see it)
7.   Oshkosh      ( looks like more of the same)
8.   Superior      (alwayss next year, again and again, and again and again)

Poor Platteville can't even get ranked

As already noted, Platteville needs to be added.

And, no offense, but these are the current http://www.d3hoops.com/top25/ rankings:

8.  UW-Whitewater - 385

23.  UW-Stevens Point - 110

25.  UW-Stout - 104

Also receiving votes - UW-Eau Claire - 49

It's just a preseason ranking, but it's a relatively unbiased view of the strength of the WIAC.

You made me laugh - poor platville. Well I blew it. Platville 6 moving la crosse and everyone after down 1 notch. Poor, poor platville.

And just for giggles, here's how things were heading into last season...

WIAC coaches' preseason poll had Whitewater, EC, Point, Stout, UWL, UWP, UWO, UWRF and Superior as the projected finish... while D3Hoops had Whitewater 1st, EC 25th and Point receiving votes...

The year-end D3 poll finished with Point 7th, EC 15th and Whitewater 17th....

We shall see how things shake out over the gruelling, topsy-turvy season...

Ladies, start your engines!

It should be an interesting year to say the least.

My "picks"

1. Whitewater- Swan song for Hendrickson and Thompson. Like their freshmen
2. Stout- Hirssig is the best in the league and Stokke seems primed for a good year; just not sold on the rest
3. Point- Was ready to pick them when I sat down but didn't realize how young they are. Wouldn't surprise me to see them win it; just can't pick it.
4. River Falls- Lots of kids back who were playing well at year's end. It's still tough to crack that top three though with programs that know how to win.
5. Eau Claire-Another young team, just three upperclassmen.

Note the steep drop; throw these four in a hat. This group is a pick 'em as far as I'm concerned. I'm almost ready to start them all with 10 losses to the 5 teams ahead but we all know that's probably not realistic ... plus one has to make the tournament so I'll go with ...

6. Oshkosh- I'd like to definitely say they're the best of this group but I don't know who they have since their roster is not up. I know Erin Baganz left. I also know they got two nice guards who are freshmen.
7. Platteville- Couple older kids
8. La Crosse- Who's going to score
9. Superior- I want to move them up a notch. I just can't do it til they prove it.

It's nice to see the WARHAWKS getting ranked and other posters liking their chances in league play.  Personally I'm not quite sure what to expect.  The gap left by Morton's departure will be a huge one to fill.  It's probably unreasonable to expect one player to do that so the others are going to have to pick up the slack.  Dana Thompson will play strong underneath but she's a different player than Morton and we may have more of a perimeter oriented team this year.  That being the case we'll need solid seasons from our outside players like Hendrickson, Sontag, Bundy and the others.

At any rate it should be an exciting season and we'll continue our fast paced, uptempo style that's fun to watch.

Hirssig should have a monster year.

This year it's UW Oshkosh's turn to scrimmage the Badgers in Madison.  It will be a tough match-up for them, especially considering how young they are.  Has anyone heard about other scrimmages going on with WIAC teams?

Stout @ Marquette this Saturday.  SP @ Milwaukee on Nov 5.  Superior is playing @ Mary (ND) on Nov 7.

I'd love to go down there for this game.  Coach T's sister is Senior Associate Athletic Director at Marquette, and it's always fun spending time with the Thomas family...

But we're going to be down in a few weeks for the UWM Honors Band Festival - our Grandson has been selected to participate in it!  That same weekend Stout will be playing games on Friday and Saturday in Milwaukee, so hopefully we can attend one or both...

Bears rule

Billys, this looks close. I think the Whitewater and Stout teams are much better than everyone else. The other teams lost too much. Right now flip a coin to determine who is your winner. It will come down to who is injury free.

For 3-5, let's just flip that coin again. the SP is young, EC is big and RF has young but experienced players. May come down to Coaching.

6-9. This will be so close, I think LX  has fallen the most due to graduation and lack of experience, Sup Coach has been pushing, I think this is their year to exit the bottom. Plat and Osh have talented players I am just not sure how they will all work out.

So here we go with my stab.
1-WW
2-Stout
3-EC
4-SP
5-RF
6-Plat
7-Osh
8-Sup
9-LX

The only think I know for sure is that the players and Coaches get to decide this with their play and not us.

Regarding UWL....

I find it tough to see a drop to the bottom of the conference this year.  I definitely agree that consistent scoring is going to be what will hold this team back and that of course it is a huge loss to graduate the talent they did last year.

But,  combine some strong younger players getting some early season experience with the addition of arguably the MIAC's best defensive player last year and I see a promising season for this group.

It will be rocky as can be expected when you have to play tough competition night in and night out, but this team will be very strong defensively which should give them opportunites to hang around in games and get some Ws.

Bears rule

Agree, it is just so hard to predict until we see who shows up and how hard they worked in the off season. The one thing is ALL the teams have good people as players.
