Nice win by the Pioneers last night defeating Milikin 70-64 in OT on the Big Blue's home court.  Milikin was 4-29 from beyond the arch.

Wow. Another perplexing result. Milikin beats Point on the road and then loses to Platteville at home.  I'm sure Coach Wilson got a good scouting report from Coach Egner, but still that's an unexpected result.

If Millikin was 4 of 29 from beyond the arch, that's pretty good because the arch is in St Louis.

Obviously that would be a difficult shot.  Much more difficult than one that was behind the arc which, unfortunately for them, Milikin didn't shoot any better.

Halftime scores:

UWEC over UWO, 35-15.  UWO with only 3FGs (3-26)

UWW over UWL, 43-34.  UWW was up 14 with 30sec left.  UWL goes on 5-0 run.

Point over Stout, 44-21.  Point already playing deep into their bench.

Just Bill

Point jumped out to a 30-8 lead and threw it into cruise control for essetially the rest of the game, winning 79-55.  Both teams shot about the same percentage from the field, but Point went 7-17 from three while Stout was just 3-14.  Stout also had 26 turnovers to Point's 10.

Some other final scores:

UWEC over UWO, 64-52.  Balanced scoring by EC's starters.

UWW over UWL, 83-62.  Burg and Kumerow go to work.

Good road wins for each team.  UWW is looking a lot better than I thought they would.

Agree UWW is look'in real good. Otherwise no WIAC surprises tonight. EC could have won by 20 or more but got real, real sloppy. They need to deal with sloppy turnovers if they want to go far. While the game was never close, EC did not play well for most of the second half. They do not like the trip to Oshkosh and have faultered there in the past. Good news is Plendil is getting better and better - really showed tonight. Also EC defense is outstading. The defense continues to be the strength of this team.

Just got back from the WW UWL game.  Not much has changed with whitewater this year.  They are fast, strong, and athletic.  Tough team to play if you are sloppy with the basketball as UWL was.  WW jumped out to a 14 point lead late in the first,  UWL actually went up 1 with 10ish minutes left in the 2nd half and really looked like they were ready to really blow this game open..... Then the wheels came loose.

Very impressed with 43 on WW as usual.  She is an eagle killer.  Also, the point guard #5 played an unbelievable game.  She definitely does not play like a freshman, has a lot of poise and makes great decisions with the ball.  55 for WW didn't miss many shots, very solid.  She played a quiet game, but racked up a lot of points on mid range jumpers.

On to EC.  Suddenly this matchup Saturday got a lot more significant so early in the season.  I'll start getting nervous if the eagles start 1-3 in their first 4 conference games like last year.

Agree EC vs LAX is a big match up especially with UWW off to a great start. I admit I'm an EC fan.I do think it will be super hard for LAX to take EC at Zorn unless EC goes into the doldrums like they did with OSH tonight, then LAX could win. We will see.

bgbacker

Not sure .. but it sounds like EC went "into the doldrums" after they were up by 25. They almost had a pair of double-doubles (Plendl was one rebound short).

The freshman point guard for the WARHAWKS is Kaitlyn Thill (#5).  She's the sister of ex-WARHAWK Trisha Thill and every bit as good.  Her line for last night reads 12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 7 steals and 0 turnovers in 27 minutes.  Chantel Burg (#43) and Cortney Kumerow (#55) each went 7-10 from the floor to finish with 17 points apiece.  Burg also had 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals.  Kumerow is the daughter of ex-Ohio State All American linebacker Eric Kumerow who played professionally for the Miami Dolphins.  Freshman Mary Merg finished with 11 points on 3-5 shooting from beyond the arc.  One glaring stat was turnovers where LaCrosse had 27, 16 of which were steals and the WARHAWKS had a season low 13.  Also bench scoring which the WARHAWKS dominated 43-11.

Danielle Frank led LaCrosse with a double-double 12 points, 14 rebounds.  Lindsey Litrenta and Dana Churchill added 11 and 10 points respectively.

It was the second time this season that the WARHAWKS have defeated a ranked team on the road.

Until La Crosse proves they can win big games, I'm not buying.

I wouldn't call the 1st game in a 16 game season a big game, but since you are...

Wins that would qualify as "big game wins" under your methodology last year:

Double OT win at Stout
Sweep of RF
20 point blowout of Point

Losses:
Swept by EC and WW
loss at Point

If these regular season games are considered "big games" I would say UWL has fared pretty well over the last year and definitely shown they can compete with anyone.

Personally "big games" are playoff games to me which obviously UWL struggled in last year.  So, I'll save the big game comments until one actually comes along.  Until then every game is just another night in the competitive WIAC trying to get better.
