EC played ball control and patience with a pretty even scoring attack. They really held it together. RF who is a super team did not have the weapons that EC had. With the LAX victory over SP, shows that the WIAC is very wide open. WW, LAX, EC, Rf and SP are all capable of beating each other on any night. I have seen some wonderful D3 ball in the WIAC. The games are super tight and the teams are really focused and the defense is outstanding. Can EC keep the focus and determination they showed today. I think the team is still growing and Englund is really on top of her coaching this year- i thought last year was a bumpy. It is really unfortunate the refs are letting the opposing team pound Plendl. Also see allot of "over the line" holding on her as well - part of the game but... The refing was very good in the game today but there were a 2 calls where the refs embarassed themselves. Otherwise very good, less the Plendil pounding. . Go watch a WIAC game and be thoroughly entertained by some really competative basketball.

The WARHAWKS took it to Superior today 86-55. Hitting six of their first seven shots the WARHAWKS jumped on top 14-0 expanded it to 24-3 and eventually 32-6 on the way to a 43-26 half time lead.  Cortney Kumerow's 16 points led the way.  Superior never got closer than 19 in the second half.

Kumerow led all scorers with 22 points.  Kaitlyn Thill and Mary Merg each scored 13 points and Jamie Swanson added 10.  Kumerow had a game high 9 rebounds while Thill and Merg had 7 and 6 assists respectively as the WARHAWKS recorded 27 assists on 35 baskets.  Nine different WARHAWKS recorded steals with Steph Glynn's 3 leading the way.

Bri Davis led Superior with 12 points.  An outstanding defensive effort by the WARHAWKS held the Yellow Jackets leading scorer, Sally Linzmeier, 4 points on 2-12 shooting.

QuoteAfter this game someone said to me. "If that ball had gone in, it might have ruined lives. That's why it didn't go."

Funny you say that. I was curious what would happen to the key St. Lawrence players and their coach after coming so close. I had the feeling that St. Lawrence would have a hard time getting back to that point again.

The coach, of course, turned out just fine. G.P. Gromacki won the title with Amherst last year and has the No. 1 team this year.

A couple years later I interviewed the top player on that team, Meredith Eisenhut. Her sister was playing for Union, a team in St. Lawrence's conference.  I probably asked her about the game, but don't remember what she said. I do remember that she was very outgoing, funny and seemed to be enjoying life coaching basketball. I was struck by how extroverted she was.

And the player who missed the shot did well, too. She was pre-med in 2002. Now she's Dr. Barbieri, a psychologist in Southern Connecticut.

Week 7 - 2012, 15, 16 and 17th nationally. Great year for the WIAC. LAX should also be in the top 25. The action continues WEDS.

The WARHAWKS made it seven straight with a 70-56 victory over Oshkosh last night.  The first half was a back and forth sort of game with four ties and seven lead changes.  At the eleven minute mark Oshkosh had built their largest lead of the game at six points 18-12.  A 10-4 run by the WARHAWKS over the next seven minutes left the two teams tied for the fourth time in the half 22-22.  Baskets by Katie Burton and Cortney Kumerow followed by a three-pointer from Kaitlyn Thill extended the run before Oshkosh answered with another basket.  Thill drilled another three-pointer to put the WARHAWKS up by ten and a pair of Oshkosh free throws closed out the half with the WARHAWKS on top 34-26.  Oshkosh rallied to start the second half with a layup and three consecutive three-pointers to tie the game for the fifth time 39-39 after three and half minutes of play.  The two teams traded the lead for the next six minutes when a three-pointer from Thill put the WARHAWKS on top for good 47-45.  The lead steadily grew to a high of sixteen before the game ended at fourteen.

Both teams shot the ball pretty well with the Titans finishing the game at an even 50% and the WARHAWKS 52%.  The WARHAWKS won the battle of the boards 28-20 and had 10 steals to the Titans 3.

Kumerow led the WARHAWKS in scoring with 13 points.  Thill added 12 including 3-3 from beyond the arc while both Mary Merg and Chantel Burg chipped in with 10 apiece.  Steff Glynn had a game high 5 rebounds for the WARHAWKS while Burg had a game high 5 steals.  Thill's 4 assists were a team high.

Megan Wenig paced the Titans with a game high 17 points.  Kelsey Myklebust added 14 and Alicia Tollefson had 11.  Wenig's 5 assists were a game high.

Trailing UWL 30-28 in the second half, UWEC clamped down on defense, held the Eagles scoreless for about 8 minutes, and went on 13-0 run to take the command in a 49-36 win in EC...

The game between two of the league's top defensive teams was tied at 22 at half; the Eagles hit only 5 of 30 shots in the second half (16.7 %) and were held to their lowest point total output on the season... Overall, the Eagles shot just 22.8% on the night (13-57 FG) and 6-17 from the line (35.5%), but did hit 6 of 17 threes.

UWEC, on the other hand, missed all ten of its threes, but was nearly perfect from the stripe, hitting 15 of 17. Collectively, the team shot 17-47 (36.2%)...Golds held a 45-31 advantage on the boards, while the Eagles had fewer turnovers, at 10 to 16...

Ellen Plendl, who sat quite a bit, had a double-double, with 10boards and 11 points to lead the Blugolds. Callie Halama chipped in 14 points and 8 boards, while freshman Courtney Lewis had a nice game on the boards, too, collecting 8 rebounds... Kassie Robinson led the Eagles with 10 points; Mallory Cramer had 8 rebounds...

Nice crowd at Zorn, with 1,026 fans in attendance... Next up for UWEC (15-3, 8-1) is a trip to Superior on Wednesday (9-8, 3-6). UWL (13-5, 6-3) is off...

The WARHAWKS never trailed in the game and extended their winning streak to eight games by beating Stout 72-55.  The WARHAWKS scored first when Cortney Kumerow hit a jumper.  Stout tied the game with the next basket but after that the WARHAWKS regained the lead on another jump shot from Kumerow and built it to seven points 11-4 before Stout rallied and tied the score 12-12 with a little less than ten and half minutes to play in the half.  Mary Merg gave the WARHAWKS the lead for good with a three-pointer and it quickly grew to double figures reaching a high of eighteen before the half ended with the WARHAWKS on top by sixteen 35-19.  Kumerow led both teams with 14 points on 6-7 shooting from the floor while the WARHAWKS dominated the boards 23-14 with Chantel Burg's 8 rebounds leading the way.  Stout was a cold 23% (6-26) from the floor.  The WARHAWKS also had 16 points off of Stout turnovers.  Things only got worse for the Blue Devils in the second half as the WARHAWKS built leads of thirty three points twice and the final score was the closest they would get.

Merg finished with a game high 20 points and Kumerow was close behind with 18.  Burg had a game highs with 9 rebounds  and 5 assists.  Kaitlyn Thill and Katie Burton each had a pair of steals.  No WARHAWK played over 26 minutes.

Whitney Rawdon and Brea Boomer each had 11 points to lead the Blue Devils.  Rawdon led the team with 6 rebounds.

The WARHAWKS out shot the Blue Devils 47%-35% and outscored them 25-15 off of turnovers.  Stout finished with an 36-33 advantage on the boards including 18 on the offensive end.

The Blugolds continue to win and win on the road but just barely. A credit that they win but seem to struggle. Maybe folks are out to take them down so they really get focused and play extra hard against EC. I think the EC team has struggled and does not find a groove. I absolutely do not see how they wll beat WW on Saturday unless WW has a pretty major let down. Again, think the 14th ranking by D3Hoops ranking is fair but sooner or later the Blugolds will faulter on the road. The WW game is the one unless they overcome the turnovers and missed shots. Superior played outstanding and if it weren't for foul shootingwould have one. Superior and OsKosh could have taken EC down

Point drilled the WARHAWKS for a second time 80-58.  The WARHAWKS held an early lead 19-17 after nine and half minutes but Point scored the next nine to go up 26-19.  The WARHAWKS got to within three 26-23 with three and half minutes left in the half but Point scored the final ten points of the half to lead 36-23 when it ended.  With the exception of two occassions Point maintained a double figure lead for the entire second half.

Point outshot the WARHAWKS 53% to 33%, outrebounded them 37-29 and had fewer turnovers 15 to 25.

Mary Merg led three WARHAWKS in double figures with 14 points.  Jamie Swanson had 12 and Cortney Kumerow 11.  Chantel Burg had a team high 3 assists while Merg and Kaitlyn Thill each had 3 steals.

As was the case in their first meeting Averkamp was a tough matchup finishing with 24 points.  Sam Barber had a double-double 18 points, 11 rebounds.  Brooke Allen also had double figure points with 10 and a game high 5 steals.

I didn't expect that SP WW result at all.  I was thinking SP would win but it would be close.  Now Saturday's EC at WW game should be fun to see.  I'm thinking that it will be close if WW can keep Halama from going off.  I think WW is a little better on the perimeter but they will have a tough time getting anything going on the inside against Plendl.

Eau Claire scored first on a free throw but the WARHAWKS scored the next eleven to take a lead they would hold for the remainder of the game in the 61-41 win.  Eau Claire pulled to within one 17-16 with nine and half minutes to play in the half but the WARHAWKS responded building the lead to ten points 35-25 before the half ended with them on top by eight 35-27.  Eau Claire shot just 33% to that point while the WARHAWKS shot 52%.  The WARHAWKS scored the first six points of the second half as Eau Claire scored just one point in the first five minutes in what ended up being a 10-1 run by the WARHAWKS.  Trailing 45-28 Eau Claire scored the next five points to close the gap to twelve points but the WARHAWKS behind Cortney Kumerow and built the lead back to twenty points 55-33 with just over twelve and half minutes to play and never relinquished a double digit lead after that.  Neither team shot well but the  WARHAWKS held Eau Claire to just thirteen points on 18% from the field.

Eau Claire shot a chilly 27% from the field including 2-9 from beyond the arc.  They also didn't shoot well from the free throw line going 13-22 (59%).  The WARHAWKS shooting touch also cooled off finishing the game at 39% but were 13-16 (89%) from the charity stripe.  Eau Claire dominated the boards 46-33 but the WARHAWKS had ten fewer turnovers (16-26) and had a 14 to 6 advantage in steals.  The WARHAWKS held a 32-7 advantage in points off of turnover, a 21-5 advantage in points off the bench, and surprisingly a 9-6 advantage in points in the paint.

Cortney Kumerow led the WARHAWKS in scoring with 11 points.  Katie Burton also scored in double figures with 10 points.  All told the WARHAWKS had ten players score points.  Chantel Burg had a team high 7 rebounds and a game high 4 steals.  Kaitlyn Thill had a game high 4 assists.

Ellen Plendl led Eau Claire with game highs in points, 19, rebounds 12, and blocks 6.  Plendl also had 3 steals and went 9-9 from the free throw line.

As Badgerwarhawk has accuratelyy described, WW won easily over EC. WW was outstanding in their pressure and defense and scoring. It was simply hard for EC to shoot (and probably think). As I noted earlier in the week, didn't expect EC to win. There have been some sign of slippage. That said, if EC can get back on the straight and narrow, they play 4 out of the next 5 games at home. All against teams they have beat away (that in no way makes it easy). If  EC gets back into groove, could we see Point and EC in  a championship game at EC in a couple of weeks. Again, I know it is the WIAC and beating RF may be a mamouth task. I guess the Blugolds need to get back on track and if they do there are lots of good things that can happen.

badgerwarhawk

Just to clarify a point I didn't say it was easy.  That was your description.  Pressure defense did give EC some problems most notably three shot clock violations in the first half.  Aside from the first half the WARHAWKS didn't shoot very well.  Fortunately EC shot worse.
