UW-Stout got drilled 88-48 against #4 Depauw at the Dunn's Sporting Goods Tip-Off Tournament at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Depauw had at one point a 60 point lead on the Blue Devils in the second half. It was UW-Stout's worst loss in a few decades. UW-Stout plays Hamline (MN) in the Consolation Game Saturday at 1 PM.

Your memory is kind of short. They lost by 59 in a game last season. They also lost a few games in the 30-40 point range last year.

WHITEWATER - 65
Wartburg - 55

The  WARHAWKS started the game with a 12-2 run and built two leads to highs of 15 points before the half ended with a fourteen point lead, 36-22.  The WARHAWKS shot just 33% but hit 12 of 16 free throws to just 3 of 6 for Wartburg.  Katie Burton led the team with 11 points.  After the WARHAWKS scored the first basket of the second half Wartburg rallied hitting five three-pointers to key a 25-5 run taking the lead 47-43.  The WARHAWKS regained the lead with a 7-0 run but Wartburg answered with a 9-2 run of their own and tied the score 52 all with just under three minutes remaining.  Following the tie the WARHAWKS put the game away with an 11-0 run to close out the game.

Burton led the WARHAWKS scoring with 15 points.  Kaitlyn Thill added 14 and Mary Merg an even dozen.  Merg also had a team high 5 assists and Courtney Kumerow a team high 8 rebounds.  Free throws and turnovers keyed the win.  Wartburg's 24 turnovers, to just 10 for the WARHAWKS included 15 steals.  Thill led the way with 10, tied for the third highest in program history.  Thill now has 17 steals in the two games played.  The WARHAWKS hit 20 of 29 free throws while Wartburg was 10 of 18.

The WARHAWKS will play Monmouth, who defeated Iowa Wesleyan 75-48, today.

Monmouth - 90
WHITEWATER - 89  OT

After overcoming double figure deficits to pull out wins in their first two games the WARHAWKS came up a point short in the championship game of the weekend tournament in Monmouth.  The WARHAWKS jumped out to an early seven point lead but Monmouth rallied and took a lead with eleven minutes remaining which with the exception of one tie they would hold the rest of the half building it to a high of seven points, 34-27, when the half ended.  The WARHAWKS were able to tie the game 37-37 in the first three minutes of the second half but Monmouth recaptured it and took it to a high of twelve points before the WARHAWKS whittled it away and tied the game a second time 64-64 on a Courtney Kumerow free throw with four minutes to play.  The WARHAWKS took their first lead of the half on their next possession but Monmouth forged four ties down the stretch.  Tied 74-74 with 28 seconds the WARHAWKS played for one last shot however two three point attempts were unsuccessful and the game went to overtime.  Monmouth scored first in OT and with the exception of a single tie led by as many a five points.  Trailing by three the WARHAWKS had a chance to send the game into a second overtime when Kaitlyn Thill was fouled on a three-point attempt with eight seconds to play.  Thill made the first two but missed the third.  Monmouth rebounded but turned the ball over on a steal by Megan Theune.  However the WARHAWKS returned the favor with a turnover of their own and the game ended.

Thill led all scorers with 23 points.  Courtney Kumerow added 21, Abbie Reeves 18 and Mary Merg an even dozen.  Kumerow and Katie Burton had a team high 8 rebounds apiece and Burton's 4 assists were a team high.

Paige Nord led the Scots with 20 points and a game high 6 assists.  Zipporah Williams had a game high 15 rebounds to go with her 19 points.

Turnovers were a significant factor as the Scots scored 32 points off of 22 WARHAWK turnovers while the WARHAWKS only managed 21 off of 21 Monmouth turnovers.  It was particularly a problem in the first half when Monmouth outscored the WARHAWKS 20 to 4.

The WARHAWKS will open the home portion of their schedule Saturday when they host Edgewood College.

UW-Superior had a winning weekend--nice to see. One or two-point difference at half and then break away in the second half. Sally Linzmeier makes the team, but I think this year she has more help. Maybe a little depth. I have better feeling about this year than in any of the last twelve.

The WARHAWKS had little trouble with Edgewood defeating the Eagles 83-39 tonight.  With the exception of a pair of early ties the WARHAWKS led the entire game.  Forcing 40 turnovers for the first time in two decades the WARHAWKS had a 39-15 advantage in points off of turnovers.  The taller WARHAWKS also had a big advantage in the paint outscoring Edgewood 40-18.  Mary Merg finished with a game high 21 points while Courtney Kumerow added 12.  Sixteen WARHAWKS players or the twentythree who played scored.   Kumerow led the team with 5 rebounds while Thill had game highs of 7 assists and 7 steals.

Melanie Walker led Edgewood with 16 points.

Saw the SP and ST Thomas game. Not that SP did themselves favors but at the risk of not being politically correct, they were "hosed".
Some pretty remarkable charge fouls on Sam B. Funny the shots went in and they were jump shots. Not fun being rated number 1 in
the early part of the season even if it is just for a week.

Barber was only whistled for one offensive foul, and it was a pretty legit call. UST's pressure defense had more to do with their ability to come back from down 13 early in the second half than anything else.

Trailing the Loras reserves by eight at the half the WARHAWKS reserves rallied in the second stanza for a 66-56 win.

UWO took care of Lakeland College 54-44. UWO lead by 20 at half and held a 30-14 rebounding edge at that point. Kind of coasted in the 2nd half but UWO has yet to allow more than 50 points in a game yet. Albeit not against the strongest competition.

WARHAWKS : 69
Illinois Wesleyan : 72

With the game tied 9-9 the WARHAWKS made a 9-0 run to take a lead they would hold for the remainder of the first half.  The lead grew to a high of eleven points with a little over a minute and half to play but Wesleyan closed the gap with with a 7-0 run before the half ended with the  WARHAWKS up by five, 35-30.  The lead reached double digits again 40-30 early in the second half but Wesleyan came back and tied the game 47-47 with eleven minutes remaining.  The WARHAWKS recaptured the lead with an 8-0 run and held on until the Wesleyan gained their first lead of the second half 62-61 on a pair of free throws with a minute and half remaining.   A three-point basket put Wesleyan ahead 67-63 shortly thereafter.  The WARHAWKS would get within a pair 67-65 on a layup by Courtney Kumerow but Wesleyan went 4 for 4 from the free throw line to seal the deal.  Free throws were the deciding factor in the game as Wesleyan went 22-27 to the WARHAWKS 7-10.

Kaitlyn Thill led three WARHAWKS in double figures with a game high 21 points.  Kumerow added 14 points and Katie Burton 12.  Thill also had game highs of 8 assists and 4 steals.  Burton had a game high 8 rebounds.

The WARHAWKS open conference play Saturday when they travel to Stout.

Saw RF play St Benedict. Really like the looks of the RF team. Having seen LAX, Stout, SP and EC, I think RF will be a contender. Look for LAX to beat EC tonight. EC will improve with time. EC has a ton of young talent. Not yet ready to beat ""an "OK" LAX team. EC would be better served if the coach played her two seniors who are riding the bench. They are quality players with great experience. EC might be 4-1 if these folks had played more, my 2 cents.  Finally, surprised at the 2 WW losses. SP remains the heavy favorite. Maybe RF is #2.

The two seniors mentioned above came off the bench after an extremely bad EC start against LAX. The two seniors combined for 19 points and EC went on to win. Maybe one of the EC coaches reads these boards. EC was down 0-12 at the start of the game. The world changed when the proven senior talent was put in. Hooray for Superior! Maybe they will get rank. Big question, does SP fall out of the top 25?

Stout jumped on top early and with the exception of a single lead change and a tie led for the first fifteen minutes of play.  Sam Quandt's jumper tied the game 26-26 and the WARHAWKS took the lead on Abbie Reeves' basket.  The lead reached a high of seven 38-31 when the half ended.  The lead reached double digits early in the second half and after that it got a high of twenty six points twice before the game ended with the WARHAWKS won 72-53.  The WARHAWKS had a 28-12 advantage in points off of turnovers, a 16-5 advantage on second chance points (15 offensive rebounds), outscored Stout 21-12 off the bench and out rebounded the Blue Devils 43-28.

Courtney Kumerow had a game high 18 points and 10 rebounds.  Katie Burton finished with 14 points while Lisa Palmer and Quandt added 10 points each.  Kaitlyn Thill and Mary Merg each had 4 assists.

Whitney Rowdon led Stout with 16 points.

The WARHAWKS will host LaCrosse Wednesday night.
