D3hoops.com's pre-season All American team features three WIAC athletes.  Superior's Sally Linzmeier was named to the second team.  Platteville's Alyssa Krojco was a fourth team designee and Oshkosh's Katelyn Kuehl was an honorable mention selection.

Congrats to Sally Linzmeier and Kaitlyn Thill (first team), Sarah Stecker (second team), Katelyn Kuehl and Alyssa Krajco (third team) on their selection to the All Central Region team.  And congrats to Brad Fischer who was selected as the Central Region Coach of the Year.

Voice of the Titans, the problem wasn't the seniors the problem was the person coaching them.

My quote here was in reference to UWW's seniors. Didn't want to go up against them anymore!  :)

My bad, I misunderstood your meaning.  That may have been one of the best class of seniors in our program's history.  We'll miss them big time.

The WARHAWKS open the season with a convincing 86-68 win over U of Chicago.  A 29-19 advantage in points off of  turnovers, 17-2 advantage on second chance points and 30-17 point spread from the charity stripe spelled the difference.  Led by Abby Reeves (8) the WARHAWKS out rebounded the Maroons 46-29 including 21 to 2 on the offensive end.  Riley Stewart (20), Reeves (19) and new comers Kate McKay (12) and Andrea Meinert (11) all scored in double figures.  Freshman Brooke Trewyn led the WARHAWKS with 4 assists and 4 steals.

Caught the EC season kick off games at Zorn. Both OSH and EC looked very good. While it took EC a while to get going with Coe, they won without any difficulty. OSH was pestered by many ref calls but won going away against Coe as well. Both severely dominated Hamline. Just some thoughts. OSH looked very good against Hamline - what you would expect from a highly ranked team. Due to super tight ref calls and Coe's inside size, OSH seemed to struggle some during the game. Wondered if OSH is a little one dimensional - paint/underneath only. Seemed to struggle some on the outside. Wondered how effective OSH would be if their underneath game was taken away. EC struggled some against Coe, particularly in the first half after EC jumped out to a good lead. They did take over in the second half. EC looked their best in several years against Hamline. What was really notable was 4-5 quality underneath players. Patient, controlled and hard to score against. The outside was also strong 4-5 solid players Saar, Lewis, Lichtfuss, Midtlien and a freshman LaCroix. I believe EC may be a true contender in  the WIAC. Looked like LAX, UWW had good weekends. Stout struggled at 0-2.

Oshkosh struggled in the early going yesterday, getting down 11-2 as Viterbo got some good post looks and Oshkosh missed a few chippies. But, in November, my car even takes a little bit of time to get going, and Oshkosh cruised 90-44. A lot of balance in this game and great contributions from the bench. Looks to be an exciting year!

Elmhurst: 63
WARHAWKS: 60

A close loss in game that we probably should have won.  Both halves had a similar flow.  In the first one the WARHAWKS built a ten point lead 29-19 with alittle over five minutes remaining.  However Elmhurst closed the half with a 12-5 run to make it 34-31 when the horn sounded.  In the second half the WARHAWKS built a twelve point lead 49-37 in the first six and half minutes.  Elmhurst then outscored us 17-5 over the next ten minutes or so and took a lead on a three pointer with four and half minutes remaining.  The game stayed close and was tied 60-60 with a minute and half remaining.  The WARHAWKS missed their final three shots and Elmhurst made three free throws for the win.  Free throws made the difference as the BlueJays went 13-13 in the second half while the WARHAWKS got to the line only three times (2-3).  Abbie Reeves went 5-6 from beyond the arc and finished with a game high 19 points.  Lisa Palmer pulled down 7 rebounds and added 3 assists and a pair of blocks and steals.  Brooke Trewyn also had 7 rebounds in a reserve role.

The WARHAWKS next three games are tough ones against George Fox, DePauw and Illinois Wesleyan.  All three games are road games though the first two are being played in Milwaukee.

George Fox from the Northwest Conference has made the trip out to Wisconsin. I'm looking forward to the match-up with UWW and hope the Bruins compete well in this early season match-up.  Always great when teams make the effort from strong conferences to play each other.

George Fox: 74
WARHAWKS: 56

Starting two freshman, a sophomore and two juniors the WARHAWKS stayed close for the first eight minutes of the game before George Fox made a run and opened up a double digit lead.  The two teams stayed within ten points or so of each other for the rest of the half which ended with George Fox up 39-29.  A 21-4 run by George Fox opened up a 25 point lead in the second half and 16 points is the closest the WARHAWKS would get the rest of the way.

Abbie Reeves and Kate Mckay each scored 12 points to lead the WARHAWKS in scoring.  Andrea Mienert added 10 points.  Lisa Palmer (11) and Brooke Trewyn (10) had double digit rebounds as the team out rebounded George Fox 52-34.  As a team the WARHAWKS had only 4 assists while turning the ball over 20 times.

It doesn't get any easier today as the team will face 2012 National Champion DePauw.  Illinois Wesleyan and Oshkosh follow.

DePauw 63
#14 UW-Whitewater 54

Final

DePauw escapes Milwaukee with 2 close wins (they narrowly won against host WLC 69-68 last night). UW-W falls to 1-3 and could very well drop out of the top 25 after this weekend.

The WARHAWKS opened the scoring with a three point basket by Brooke Trewyn and held a lead which peaked at 8 points for the entire first half.  The lead stood at 5 27-22 when the half ended.  The WARAHWKS were able to maintain the lead for the first five minutes of the second half when DePauw took the lead on a layup and built it to a high of twelve points with just under eight minutes to play.  The WARHAWKS could get no closer than five points after that.  Each team had 20 baskets and the WARHAWKS had one more three point basket but Depauw was 20-24 from the free throw line while the WARHAWKS were only 10-17.  Andrea Meinert finished with 15 points and Kate McKay added 11.   Lisa Palmer had a team high 8 rebounds.  Reilly Stewart had a pair of assists and steals.

Looks like a bumpy start for UWW. I think by the end of the WIAC Year, they will still be in the hunt for an NCAA bid. Do appreciate UWO national ranking and 4 and 0 record. Having seen them play twice in EC, I am still not a believer. Recognize they are really good and will win many games. I think if you shut the lanes and the underneath attack, they will have some problems. We will see. Glad to see RF off to a good start. Will need to look at Stout stats to see if the coach is letting his best layers stay in or if he continues to platoon and aalso pulling people if they make a mistake. Seems like 6th grade ball to me when he does that... EC has sown promise. Should have beaten Winona and let St Mary's get far away after an early big lead. St. Norberts will be a good test for the Blugold. I look for a win at home.

EC had no trouble with number 24 St. Norberts winning by 13. EC took away the underneath game from the Green Knights and had a pretty well rounded scoring attack. EC again entered it's "mid first half funk" but luckily played through it and ended the half with a 7 point led. It's that funk that cost them the Winona and St. Mary's Game. EC goes into the "horse latitudes" for about 6-7 minutes usually with about 12 minutes left in the half. Once there it is a struggle to undo the damage. Anyhow,in spite of the funk,  they played very well tonight and as usual the defense was excellent. EC could really be a contender if they can keep focused for 40 minutes. I believe coach Englund sees the issue and is working on it. Going to be a different type of year in the WIAC with UWSP and UWW in a building year. Good opportunity for the Blugolds to have another run at the regular season championship. They need a little more confidence and  mental focus. Time will tell.

WARHAWKS: 75
Illinois Wesleyan U: 72

Lisa Palmer pulls down 18 rebounds scores 13 points including 6-6 from the free throw line in the game's final two minutes and leads the team to a much needed victory.  Palmer was 4-4 from the line in the final twelve seconds.  The WARHAWKS scored first and a nine point run gave us the early lead.  But both teams kept the score close throughout the half and the lead changed hands five times.   When it ended the score was 41-35 WARHAWKS.  IWU rallied in the second half and built a lead up to nine points and still held a five point lead with a minute remaining. Freshman Brooke Trewyn scored five consecutive points to tie the game at 71 but IWU quickly went back up by a point.  From that point on it was Palmer from the free throw line.

Trewyn: 14 points, 7 rebounds
Abby Reeves: 10 points, 5 rebounds
Kate McKay: 8 points, 8 rebounds

WARHAWKS out rebound IWU 53-35 and outscore the Titans 21-9 on second chances.  Free throws also played a part WW: 21-26, IWU: 13-32.

Things don't get much easier as we await the arrival of the Titans from Oshkosh Wednesday night.  This has been a tough stretch of the schedule for a young team.  After blowing one we could have won against Elmhurst it was nice to get one that we could have lost.  I do think that the younger players going through these early games should be a benefit as the season progresses.
