Really think UWOSH is super-vulnerable when the defense takes away their ability to shoot underneath. Watching the game via stream last night it was obvious UWOSH is lacking in shooting from around the key and the 3 pt line. We will see if they can improve in that aspect of their game, otherwise not long for the top 25. Bigger news of the night was EC blowing a 19 point lead with 15 minutes left. EC has exceptional talent inside and out. Coaches ability to manage the game may be an area for improvement. Third game this year, EC  has had substantial lead and blew the win. Something about letting momentum slip away, knowing when to call time out to regroup and careful substitution. Should call timeout before the damage is done. Fundamentals and not defending the 3 at critical times has hurt the team when in the lead. Good to see number 22 is starting for EC, It really has helped the effort. The WIAC is wide open this year. Still think UWW will take it. Also think RF will do much better than expected. EC has the talent to win but seems to be lacking something in terms of consistency and mentally keeping in the game. Surprised at Stouts record.

Took in the Stout and Dubuque game. Dubuque look very good both inside, outside and on defense. Stout while full of hustle simply did not shoot the ball well.  Might be another long year for the team from Menomonie.

Oshkosh: 72
WARHAWKS: 58

The Titans opened the game hot from floor making 14 or their first 18 shots and taking a nine point lead 21-12 in the first nine minutes. With the Titans leading by ten 31-21 and three minutes remaining the WARHAWKS closed the gap to three points before the Titans hit the last basket of the half and led by five, 35-30.  The Titans started the second half just as hot as the first hitting their first seven shots and increasing the lead to 47-36.  After the lead hovered around ten points for the next nine or so minutes the WARHAWKS made a run and pulled to within four points, 60-56, with three and half minutes remaining but the Titans responded with a seven point spurt of their own and scored their final eight points from the free throw line.

Freshman Brooke Trewyn continues to develop with 17 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals all of which were team highs.  Another freshman, Kate McKay, scored in double figures with 10 points.

Titans: Taylor Schmidt 17 points, 3 assists. Alex Richard 14 points, 7 rebounds.  Ashley Neustifter 10 points.

With such a young team we don't seem to have a leader.

Platteville: 90
WARHAWKS: 84

The WARHAWKS got the first two baskets but the Pioneers responded with a 10-3 run and eventually stretched the lead to double figures before Andrea Olson converted an old fashioned three point play making it 43-36 Platteville at the half.  Platteville maintained a lead that ranged from 4 to 12 points in the first thirteen minutes of the second half.  The WARHAWKS got to within three points on three occasions in the game's final four minutes but couldn't get over the hump.  The Poineers sank 13 of 14 free throw attempts in the final minute and half to seal the deal.

Abbie Reeves: 18 points
Andrea Olson: 14 points
Mia Smith: 12 points
Jaya Perkins: 11 points
Lisa Palmer: 13 rebounds

Platteville, led by Stacy Clark and Alyssa Krajco who scored 22 points apiece,  finished 24-27 from the charity stripe.

Voice of the Titans

Nice game by UWO last night at Kolf. Got out to an early lead and was able to keep it at 15 for most of the 2nd half, until Mykaela Brandt went on an 8-0 run by herself to cut a 17 point lead to 9 with about 6 to play. Great defensive effort to hold Krajco to 9 and 6 for the night, and a very solid game by Taylor Schmidt (except for the 5 TO's....that needs to get cut a little).

Anyone else noticing that with the new hand check rules that lower body contact (and by contact, I mean contact that would result in a 2-minute minor in hockey) is being let go by officials? Could just be me, but there was a ton of it on both sides last night. Has got to make it tough to coach when you don't know what's going to get a whistle out there.

#9 Wheaton: 63
WARHAWKS: 66

After Wheaton had an early lead the WARHAWKS went on top 11-8 about five minutes into the game and held a lead which reached a high of seven points twice before Wheaton regained the lead 26-24 on a pair of free throws with five and half minutes remaining.  Wheaton held the lead, which reached a high of eleven points twice, until the half ended with Brooke Trewyn's jumper cutting the deficit to nine 39-30.  Wheaton built the lead back to eleven early in the second half but the WARHAWKS generally kept the deficit within single digits.  With five minutes to play in the game Emily Jensen completed an old fashioned three point play and gave the WARHAWKS their first lead, 62-61, since early in the game.  After Wheaton tied the game Trewyn sank another jumper giving the WARHAWKS a lead, 64-62, that they would hold for the remainder of the game.  The two teams combined to score just three points in the game's final 4:18.

Lisa Palmer: 14 points, 13 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 block & 1 steal
Brooke Trewyn: 14 points
Emily Jensen: 9 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block

Each team made 24 baskets though Wheaton had 63 attempts to the WARHAWKS 46.  Each team hit 13 free throws.  The difference in the game was three point baskets where the WARHAWKS out shot the Thunder 5-2.

A good win against a pretty good team.  It wasn't pretty as the two teams combined to miss seven shots, six free throws and turned the ball over seven times in the final 4:18.  But it was a W and we needed that.

Dubuque: 65
WARHAWKS: 57

A layup by Abbie Reeves to open the scoring turned out to be the only lead the WARHAWKS would have in the game.  Shooting a frigid 26% from the floor and getting outscored 24-6 in the paint the WARHAWKS fell behind by as many as thirteen points and trailed 36-25 at the half.  Dubuque pushed the lead to sixteen points in the first minute of the second half and still led by double digits for the first five minutes.  Trailing by nine, 58-49, with a little over three and half minutes remaining Reeves converted back to back three point possessions cutting the deficit to three points but back to back turnovers prevented the WARHAWKS from getting any closer before the game ended.

Despite outrebounding the Spartans 50-33, including 23-12 on the offensive glass, the WARHAWKS were dominated in the paint (40-16) and outscored 65-17 off the bench while shooting a season low 32%.

Abbie Reeves: 17 points, 7 rebounds
Brooke Trewyn: 15 points, 2 assists
Lisa Palmer: 9 rebounds
Maddie Bare: 7 points, 6 rebounds off the bench

River Falls: 55
WARHAWKS: 77

The WARHAWKS shoot 58% from the floor and 64% from beyond the arc to even their season record at 6-6 and earn their first WIAC win.  With one exception the Falcons led by as many as nine points for the first eight minutes.  The score was tied twice, the last time with five and a half minutes remaining.  Andrea Meinert's free throw put the WARHAWKS on top 24-23 and they held a lead of two to nine points before the half ended 43-35.  Overall the WARHWKS shot 69.6% from the floor including 93% (5 of 6) three pointers.  After the WARHAWKS opened the scoring in the second half to take their first double figure lead, 45-35, the Falcons trimmed it to a single digit and kept within striking range getting to within four points.  The WARHAWKS built the lead back to double figures for good, 59-49, when Maddie Bare sank a jumper at the eight minute mark.  The lead continued to grow after that and reached it's high point when the half ended.

Brooke Trewyn: 16 points, 5 rebounds
Reilly Stewart: 12 points
Maddie Bare: 11 points, 4 assists
Andrea Meinert: 10 points, 2 steals
TEAM: 58.3% (23-48) from the floor, 63.6% (7-11) on three point shots

WARHAWKS: 59
Superior: 71

Superior shot 63% in the first half while holding the WARHAWKS to 32% and led 39-22 after twenty minutes.  Maddie Bare's 5 points led the WARHAWKS.  The WARHAWKS pulled to within five points midway through the second half and to within eight points with about three minutes remaining but each time the YellowJackets responded with short runs of their own and sank 7 of 8 free throws the game's final couple of minutes.   The WARHAWKS improved to 42% from the floor by shooting 50% in the second half.  Two freshman Malia Smith and Brooke Trewyn each scored 15 points.  Abbie Reeves had 12.

Superior's Sally Linzmeier was dominating.  The senior scored 28 points, pulled down 7 rebounds and had 5 assists, 5 steals and 2 blocks.

WARHAWKS: 74
Stout: 69

The WARHAWKS only led once, 4-2, in the first half as the Blue Devils built leads that reached as many points as fourteen before the half ended with the WARHAWKS down 37-29.  The Blue Devils out shot the WARHAWKS 50% to 38%.  Brooke Trewyn's 8 points led the WARHAWKS.  The Blue Devils maintained a single digit lead for the initial fourteen minutes of the second stanza.  A layup by Andrea Meinert gave the WARHAWKS their first lead, 56-55, but the Blue Devils responded and the two teams traded the lead over the next minute.  The Blue Devils went back up by one with just under five minutes remaining and held it the lead until Trewyn hit a pair of free throws tying the game and Meinert's layup with just over a minute made the score 69-67 WARHAWKS.  Five of six successful free throws in game's final 30 seconds sealed the win.

Andrea Meinert: 22 points, 9 rebounds
Brooke Trewyn: 20 points, 6 rebounds, 2 steals
Lisa Palmer: 9 points, 9 rebounds

EauClaire: 64
WARHAWKS: 58

The WARHAWKS scored first but the BluGolds answered with a three pointer and after a couple of ties the BluGolds hit another three pointer taking a lead, which reached a high of ten points, that they would hold for the next thirteen minutes.  Andrea Meinert's layup tied the game at 25-25 with just under four minutes remaining but  the BluGolds responded with a  12-2 run and the half ended 37-25.  The BluGolds outshot the WARHAWKS 56% to 39% and controlled the boards with a 20-14 advantage.  Lisa Palmer's 8 points led the WARHAWKS in scoring and Meinert added 6 points.  EauClaire opened the second half with a three pointer for their largest lead of the night but the WARHAWKS gradually cut into the deficit reducing it to a single point 46-45 on Palmer's jumper with eight minutes to play.  Leading by two, 58-56, with fifty seconds remaining the BluGolds went 6 for 6 from the free throw line down the stretch to seal the win.

Each team hit 5 three pointers and the WARHAWKS sank 25 shots to 22 for the BluGolds but the game was decided on the free throw line where the BluGolds were 15 of 20 and the WARHAWKS shot just 5 free throws making 3.  I have no idea what that fat dude from EauClaire was screaming about all night.

Lisa Palmer: 12 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals
Brooke Trewyn: 11 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 blocks
Malia Smith: 10 points, 5 assists, 2 steals

Voice of the Titans

Tough one at Kolf last night. The basket had a lid on it for shot from 20' to 6". Unable to capitalize on turnovers in key situations. Missed FT's were a killer throughout, though the miss of a front end with 4.5 seconds left had a bigger sting to it. After hitting their first two threes, and three of first four, missed their last 17. Just didn't look like a sense of urgency on the court (from my view) and EC was able to pull away in OT. This makes the WIAC race much more interesting. After the Superior win, UWO had the chance to put their foot on the throat of everyone else, and now stand in 3rd. We'll see if they can turn it around.
