I think the (just-in-time, dagger) 3 point shots may have been as scary as the defense.

Box score looks like fouls were 25-14, not 30-14.

My bad I see now that I mistakenly quoted the total rebound number.  Apparently when I scrolled down my eye moved one column to the left in the box score.  I tried to be careful not to editorialize about it and just indicate the numbers because they were the difference in the game.  We're looking forward to the rematch but we've got a whole lot of other things to be concerned with in the meantime.  We have a pretty decent team but I think #6 may have been a tad overinflated.

JMM, my "it's you" comment was done with tongue firmly planted in cheek.  I should have put a winking guy afterward to make my intent clearer.

WARHAWKS: 65
River Falls: 78

The WARHAWKS got the first basket but it was the Falcons building a double digit lead within the first five minutes of the game.  The lead would shrink to single digits on a couple of occasions in the second quarter reaching a low of six, 29-23, before the Falcon finished the final five and half minutes of the half with a 17-7 run and a sixteen point lead 46-30.  The Falcons shot a blistering 68% and went 17-20 from the free throw line while holding the WARHAWKS to 32% from the field.  Trailing by thirteen after three quarters the WARHAWKS reduced the deficit to single digits pulling to within eight, 69-61, with four minutes remaining before finishing the game by missing six of their last seven shots.

Abbie Reeves: 14 points
Malia Smith: 13 points, 3 assists, 4 steals
Jaya Perkins: 13 points

La Crosse: 47
WARHAWKS: 79

Reeling after consecutive loses Coach Carollo inserted Riley Stewart and Andrea Olson into the starting lineup and both responded with points in the opening minutes as the WARHAWKS jumped out in front and with the exception of a single tied score built the lead to a high of 17-6 before the quarter ended 19-12.  The Eagles remained competitive in the second quarter pulling to within four points 21-17 before falling behind by eleven 30-19 and finishing the half trailing 33-24.  Jaya Perkins 6 points led the WARHAWKS with Stewart and Andrea Meinert adding 5 points apiece.  Defensively the WARHAWKS forced 15 Eagle turnovers which included 4 steals by Malia Smith.  The game essentially ended in the opening four and half minutes of the third quarter when the WARHAWKS opened with a 12-1 run building the lead to a high of twenty six points with three and half minutes remaining.  The Eagles failed to score a basket from the field in the quarter getting all seven of their points from the free throw line and trailed 54-33 when it ended.  Twenty one points is as close as the Eagles could get in the final quarter.  The Eagles ball handling continued in the second half with another 14 turnovers for a god awful 29 on the game giving the WARHAWKS a 43-13 scoring advantage off them and 6-0 off the fast break.

Perkins: 15 points, 5 rebounds, 3 steals
Stewart: 14 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals
Olson: 11 points
Brooke Trewyn: 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks

WIAC and CCIW are almost mirror images in men's and women's.  The CCIW women almost dropped entirely out, as Wheaton fell to #24 and no one else received any votes (the CCIW men occupy slots 2, 3, and 25).  Meanwhile, the WIAC men fell totally out of the Top 25 (UWW retained 38 points, good for 3rd among ORV; UWRF got one point).

Congratulations to Shirely Egner of UWSP who won her 500th game. She is the 27th Division III coach in history to win 500 games.

Jan 20th guesses on the games"

OSH over WW. The scoring deluge against SP and the rise in national ratings may get the Titans totally back in the groove.
SP over RF. Hard for visitors to win at "Berg". I am a RF believer watching them freeze out EC in the first half last weekend.
EC over PLT. Look for O'toole to come close to 30 points again.
LAX needs a win but think this one s going to Stout

Voice of the Titans

Stout over LX
EC over PLT
RF over SP
I will Kirk Herbstreit the UWO/WW game and not pick it.

Well I look forward to the EC/WW game next Saturday. It is a huge game for EC if they are really going to contend this year. It is also a important game for WW. I think O'toole leads all WIAC conference play scoring. RF was able to shut her down for the first half last Saturday but not the second half. More on the WW/EC game before weekend.

Oshkosh: 79
WARHAWKS: 66

Reilly Stewart hit a three pointer to open the scoring and staked the WARHAWKS with a lead but the Titans scored the next four points taking a lead that wouldn't exceed four points and they would hold to the final minute of the quarter when Brooke Trewyn hit a pair of free throws tying the game 14-14 when the quarter ended.  The Titans hit the first basket of the second stanza to regain the lead and built it to a high of seven points on a couple of occasions before the half ended up five 31-26.  The Titans outshot the WARHAWKS 55% to 43% and hit 3 of 6 three pointers while the WARHAWKS managed only the initial one.  Stewart's 9 points led the WARHAWKS with Andrea Olson adding 5 points.  Taylor Schmidt and Alex Richard each had 8 points to pace the Titans.  The Titans went off in the third quarter hitting 7 or 9 shots from the floor including 3 of 5 three point baskets and went 10 of 11 from the free throw line.  The WARHAWKS kept the deficit in single digits for the first six minutes of the period but the Titans had an answer for every challenge which too often was a three point basket or a trip to the foul line.  In the final four minutes of the period the lead was in and out of double figures (10 points) though the WARHAWKS scored the last four points pulling to within six, 57-51.  Two Titan three point baskets to open the fourth quarter pushed their lead back into double digits and nine is as close as the WARHAWKS would get the rest of the way.  The Titans finished 52% from the floor including a ridiculous 9 of 15 from beyond the arc, 26 of 30 from the free throw line and dominated the boards 30-19 outscoring the WARHAWKS  36-20 in the paint.

WARHAWKS
Trewyn: 12 points, 5 rebounds
Stewart: 11 points, 2 steals
Malia Smith: 11 points, 2 assists, 2 steals
Andrea Olson: 11 points
Andrea Meinert: 10 points

Titans:
Schmidt: 23 points (3-5 3pt), 5 assists
Eliza Campbell: 12 points, 10 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals
Richard: 10 points
Ashley Neustifter: 10 points

Saturday guesses:

OSH over Stout
RF over PLT
SP over LAX
EC over WW

I think EC will dominate underneath. Also believe EC will win the rebounding game. EC has faced some pretty tough defense this year (Wartburg, Luther and N Central) and done pretty well against the super press. WW will need to do well in outside shooting and the 3pt range to win. This is EC game to win or lose. EC can't afford the mental lapses that have cost them 2-3 game this year. EC cannot let WW drive to the basket as they did against RF in the first half. Crowds have been pretty good at Zorn this year. Playing at 7 pm also helps EC. Has the EC team matured to the point of beating a really good team. That is the question. Let's say they have and EC wins by 7. If the refs call a tight game w no room for fouls, EC wins by 12. (Englund might take a chapter from the Egner book and get on the refs early about WW playing a little to close - Refs call all the fouls at "Shirley's House".....).
