If I read the WIAC article correctly, it looks like Erin O'toole is not returning to Eau Claire. Anyone of information on this?

gordonmann

Hm. She was on our list for potential Preseason All-Americans. I'll ask the school to confirm she's not back.   :-\

WARHAWKS (1-0): 70  Lakeland (0-1): 56

The Muskies kept it close early leading 10-9 after seven minutes of play.  However Malia Smith's layup put the WARHAWKS up 11-10 and a 10-2 run to finish the quarter pushed the lead to seven 19-12.  Lakeland was able to get within three points early in the second quarter.  However the WARHAWKS eventually pushed the lead back to an 8-10 point spread and though they shot poorly (27%) led at halftime 33-20.  Defensively the WARHAWKS forced 17 Muskie turnovers in the half leading to a 19-2 scoring advantage.  Brooke Trewyn's 12 points led all scorers.  The WARHAWKS opened the third quarter with a 14-7 run going up by twenty 47-27 however the Muskie's responded to finish the quarter with a 10-2 run of their own and pulled within 12 points 49-37.  The WARHAWKS would build the lead back to a game high 21 points in the fourth quarter though the Muskies were able to reduce it against the end of the bench over the game's final four minutes.

Trewyn finished with 24 points, three rebounds, a pair of assists and one block and steal.  Smith added 10 points and newcomer Becky Raeder chipped in with 8.  The Muskies finished with 28 turnovers, the WARHAWKS a 27-6 scoring edge.  Sixteen offensive rebounds by the WARHAWKS contributed to an 18-3 second chance points advantage.

The WARHAWKS next go on the road to Eau Claire where St Olaf  and Simpson will be opponents.

Cheers to the Warhawks. Will be pretty boring for Whitewater if they have to watch the Blugolds play before or after their games. EC is about as in the tank as can be. Even the die-hard fans are checking out.

That's unfortunate.

St Olaf (1-1): 51
WARHAWKS (2-0): 63

The WARHAWKS opened their weekend trip to Eau Claire with a 63-51 victory over St Olaf.  The two teams stayed within four points of one another in the first stanza. Each team had four point leads and the two were tied once.  Scoring the final four points of the quarter the WARHAWKS led by a pair 15-13 when it ended.  The lead reached as many as nine points on twice before the half ended with the WARHAWKS leading 32-26.  Andrea Minert led with 7 points while three others (Malia Smith, Becky Raeder and Kaelynn Lesniak) added four apiece.  Early in the third quarter the WARHAWKS went up by 10 but the Ollies reduced it to single digits on their next possession and it stayed there throughout the quarter which ended 43-39 in the WARHAWKS favor.  The WARHAWKS would quickly go up by twelve early.  The Ollies would cut to five but get no closer.

Smith: 11 points, 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals

Simpson (1-1): 55
WARHAWKS (3-0): 71

Concluding a quick two day trip to Eau Claire the WARHAWKS routed Simpson 71-55.  Brooke Trewyn hit for a game high 24 points and pulled down a team high 9 rebounds to lead the WARHAWKS.  After a brief WARHAWKS lead in the first minute of play the Storm took control and led by as many as seven until Malia Smith's free throw with two minutes remaining was followed by a three pointer from Riley Stewart putting the WARHAWKS ahead 19-16 with a single minute remaining and the quarter ended tied 21-21.  In the first five and half minutes of the second quarter the WARHAWKS scored eight of the first eleven points to go up five 29-24 before the half ended with the lead at seven, 33-26.  The WARHAWKS held the Storm to just five points in the quarter.  Brooke Trewyn's 12 points led the way and the Junior wing player pulled down 4 rebounds.  Smith and Stewart each added four rebounds and Stewart was second in scoring with 5 points.  The WARHAWKS put the game away in the third quarter outscoring the Storm 22-11.  Trewyn opened the quarter with a three pointer and for the majority of it the WARHAWKS lead remained in double figures reaching a high of nineteen 54-35 just before the quarter ended 55-37.  Sixteen points is as close as the Storm would get in the final quarter.

Congrats Brooke Trewyn:  This week's WIAC Player of the Week

In the team's season opener against Lakeland on Nov. 15, she totaled a game-high 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting, including four 3-pointers, in a 70-56 win. WARHAWKS (4-0): 66
IWU (1-2): 55

Neither team led by more than three points in the first quarter.  The WARHAWKS led for the first five minutes or so.  Then IWU went ahead and held the lead until the WARHAWKS scored the final four points to regain the lead 12-11.  The WARHAWKS turned the ball over ten times in the quarter but IWU shot so poorly they couldn't take advantage of it.  The second quarter was pretty much the same story.  The WARHAWKS continued to turn the ball over (8 times) and the Titans continued to miss shots (9 of 36).  With the exception of one tie WHITEWATER held a lead for the first four minutes when IWU took their only lead 20-19 of the quarter.  However the WARHAWKS outscored the Titans 5-2 after that and led 24-22 at the half.  18 first half WARHAWKS turnovers led to the Titans taking twice as many shots (36 to 18) but a 44% to 25% shooting advantage kept the score close.  The WARHAWKS started the third quarter sinking 5 or their first 7 shots and taking the largest lead 35-28 to that point.  A lead was maintained until just 11 seconds remained and IWU tied it at 44.  After that both teams committed turnovers and WHITEWATER missed a three leaving it 44-44 after three.   The early minutes of the final quarter decided the game as the WARHAWKS opened with 11-2 run in the first three and half minutes going up by 9.  That lead expanded to twelve a minute later and after that IWU could get no closer than six.

I'm not one to complain about a W and there were positives, like shooting 48%, making 23 of 28 free throws and the play of Kaelynn Lesniack off the bench, but other aspects of the game were ugly.  The WARHAWKS finished with a mind numbing 29 turnovers.  That and 21 offensive rebounds gave IWU 27 more shots though IWU only out scored WW 12-9 on second chances and with 19 turnovers themselves they couldn't take advantage.  Also free throws were a significant factor.  IWU shot 16 free throws (18 WW fouls) making 9 while IWU's 22 fouls led to 28 free throws and the WARHAWKS sank 23 of them.

Malia Smith: 14 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block
Andrea Mienert: 14 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals
Brooke Trewyn: 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals
Kaelynn Lesniak: 9 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block
Riley Stewart: 7 points, 3 rebounds, 2 steals
Becky Raeder: 7 points, 1 assist
