Usuallywrong24...... You may want to think about changing your name to Usuallywrong25.

i agree with usuallywrong24 on this one...what if a team loses twice in a week but one player has a great individual statline. another players team wins twice but only has decent stats. there are a ton of different scenarios that could be played out in determining player of the week. i do agree that team success should be taken into account for player of the week. apparently i'm the only one though.

Wow.  So, now two people actually think that Heidi A. should not be player of the week because Stout isn't as good as WW?  That thinking is off base for so many reasons that I think I shall not react to it anymore.

First, it would have been pretty hard for any WHITEWATER player to beat Hiedi A out considering none were nominated.  She had a incredible game Saturday but her performance on Friday was nothing to sneeze at.

When these difficult decisions come up I suggest we use the NBA efficency rating to resolve who played better.  It does take some defense into account (steals, d rebounds) and  it does quantify an offensive performance.  Less face it nobody is going to win based on defense alone.

The formula is as follows:

Points + rebounds + assists + steals + blocks - (Field goals attempted - Field goals made) + (Free throws attempted - Free throws made) + turnovers = efficency

So if player A scores 16 points on 5-10 from the field, 6-6 from the line, has 4 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, 1 block and 4 turnovers their efficency rating is:  16 + 4 + 3 + 2 + 1 = 26  -  5  - 0 - 4 = 17.

and

Player B scores 24 points on 10-20 from the field,  2-2 from the line, has 2 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steals, 1 block and 6 turnovers their efficency rating is 24 + 2 + 3 + 1 + 1 = 31 - 10- 6 = 15

Player A was more efficent than player B despite scoring fewer points.

And Stoutguy I did that with only two years of high school math :D

Well, I think that even with all that hs math, BW, you are confused.  These guys are suggesting that it is the Stevens Point player who should get the nod because she had to play against WW and Heidi only had to contend with lowly Stout. ;D

Voice of the Titans

I know we're well into the season, but its the first time I've gotten to look at rosters.

What's up with Stout? Only 17 on the roster this year? Are economic times so bad that they had to cut 8 more chairs from the sidelines?

Oh, never mind.

Let's put it to the test.  Heidi A played Stout 12/6 and Minn/Duluth 12/3.  Janelle Van Gample,  nominated by Stevens Point, played WW 12/6 and North Central 12/3.

Heidi:
46 + 15 + 2 +1 + 2 = 66
15 + 0 + 6 = 21
Efficency = 45

Janelle:
30 + 9 + 6 + 0 + 5 = 50
7+ 2 + 8 = 17
Efficency = 33

Objectively Heidi A had the better pair of games.

Can you tell I'm having a slow day at work?

The WARHAWKS beat Cornell (Ia.) last night 79-50.  After a close first half which ended with WW holding a one point lead, 31-30, the WARHAWKS opened the second half with a 30-0 run.  Kelsey Hendrickson led all scorers with 20 points (5-8 three-pointers).   Henrickson also led the team with 5 assists.   Tiffany Morton had another double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

The win was Coach Carollo's 100th.

Maybe we could use some of your chairs.  Your program seems to have plenty to spare.

My program? I don't coach or play for any college. Unless you mean the HS I am at. If so, budgets are tight. We can't spare many chairs. If you meant UWO, then you will have to ask THEM.

I wasn't insinuating that Heidi Asreoawivahioski shouldn't get player of the week. I just think there should be more than offensive output considered when choosing player of the week.

Think of it as the Golden Glove award, when Rafael Palmeiro won at 1B a few years back.

I suspect the Voice of the Titan thing may have led him to conclude that you call the UW-Oshkosh Titan your team.  Can't imagine why he might think that.   After all none of the high school programs in Oshkosh call themselves Titan.

I think the efficency rating is the only way to go.

The efficency rating does incorporate defensive stats in it's calculation.  It uses defensive rebounds and steals.  What other individual defensive stats would you use?  It would be impossible to use stats from the player they guarded because they could guard multiple players in a single game not to mention zone defenses they might use and using your opponents final score isn't measuring an individual defensive stat.  It's player of the week, not team of the week.

I know you're not suggesting Heidi shouldn't have won the honor.

And they do consider defensive stats when they make the decisions for player of the week.

I don't know how long you've been following the WIAC, but it wasn't that long ago that there was this tall blonde gal playing at UW Stout by the name of Kelsey Duoss.

I remember several times when she was recognized as player of the week that the write up mentioned the number of blocks she had for the week.  She was also "pretty good" offensively (#1 overall in career FG percentage at .589), but she is #2 in WIAC career blocked shots (in only 3 seasons).

One example, from the WIAC website:

QuoteWeek of Jan. 22 - 28 (2006 - 2007)
Kelsey Duoss, Senior (Janesville/Clinton), Forward of UW-Stout

Duoss helped UW-Stout to pair of league victories over second-place teams in the WIAC standings.   In a 65-52 win over conference rival UW-Eau Claire on Jan. 24, she tallied a game-high 16 points and nine rebounds, while adding two blocked shots.  Against UW-Whitewater on Jan. 27, Duoss set a school single-game record with 10 blocked shots and added a team-best nine rebounds to go along with eight points.  UW-Stout has won nine straight games overall and 10 consecutive WIAC contests.

Defense does count for these weekly honors.
