The Annihilator

Well, Duoss was a legit player. She should have had that many blocks and on nights that she didn't, clearly something was wrong. She would have been great in D1, although might not have had as many blocks. I have been following the WIAC for many years and I don't think defense is always factored in when making the decision. But such is life. So the saying goes...offense wins games, defense wins championships. Well, apparently offense wins you player of the week.

My program? I don't coach or play for any college. Unless you mean the HS I am at. If so, budgets are tight. We can't spare many chairs. If you meant UWO, then you will have to ask THEM.

I suspect the Voice of the Titan thing may have led him to conclude that you call the UW-Oshkosh Titan your team.  Can't imagine why he might think that.   After all none of the high school programs in Oshkosh call themselves Titan.

Thanks for having my back, BW.  I did think that, as a result of a WIAC discussion and the handle, he could be an Oshkosh supporter.  See, we use the word "we" or "my" when supporting a team sometimes.  Silly me.  And, yes, I am aware that budgets are tight.  Keep your damn chairs.  We'll find some more at Stout if we have to.

Did you really post that?

Duoss should have had 10 blocks per night?  That was an ALL TIME school record, and you say that if she didn't do that every game something was wrong???  You're losing credibility here...

You make no comment about the other Stout players I referenced (Verdegan and Zellinger).  Over night I thought of some other defensive standouts from Stout that received player of the week options in the last few years - Molly Hendrickson and Erin Churchill....

If you've followed the WIAC for many years, how come you don't recall some of the defensive standouts that have been honored for player of the week?  You don't follow Stout - how about WW, EC, or SP?

Lindsey Buechner of UWW last year:

QuoteBuechner helped the Warhawks to a pair of WIAC victories, including a win over No. 20-ranked UW-Eau Claire that vaulted UW-Whitewater into a tie for first-place in the league standings.  Against the Blugolds, she totaled a team-high 12 points to go along with six rebounds, three steals and two blocked shots in 22 minutes of playing time.  In a 99-87 overtime win at UW-La Crosse on January 30, Buechner poured in a team-best 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds to go along with four steals and two assists.

12 points against EC - yeah, that was a team high, but the team only scored 60 points.  It was a DEFENSIVE victory - holding UWEC to 50 points!

Rachel Becker of UWEC:

QuoteBecker averaged nearly a triple-double in two league contests during the week. In a 77-54 victory at UW-Superior on January 18, she scored eight points, dished out eight assists, grabbed seven rebounds and collected three steals. In a 66-50 win at No. 24-ranked UW-La Crosse on January 21, Becker posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 assists to go along with seven rebounds. For the week, she averaged 10.0 points, 9.0 assists, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals to help UW-Eau Claire increased its WIAC winning streak to four games.

Becker scored a total of 20 points for TWO games - and you're still trying to claim that offense wins you player of the week?  Her best game of the two she scored only 8 points!

Nathalie Lechault of UWSP:

QuoteLechault helped UW-Stevens Point to a 66-63 victory over league-leading UW-Oshkosh on January 25. She posted career highs with 19 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocked shots as the Pointers moved within one game of first place in the conference standings. She was nine-of-14 (64.3 percent) from the field and added one assist in 27 minutes of playing time. Her eight blocked shots are also the most in the league this season.

And I'd like to point out that these two players won the player of the week honors in consecutive weeks - Becker for Jan 16 - 22nd and Lechault for Jan 23 - 29th.

If I can remember many players that were defensive standouts - and were duly recognized - than anyone else that follows the WIAC should know that player of the week is not just an offensive achievement award.

It is, and always has been, the player that performed the best overall.

I  guess this was not a good week to bring the level of competition factor into the player of the week discussion.  EC also had some good opponents last week.

I am glad we now know that defensive stats do matter in the player of the week discussion.

I was just think the Point player had a gripe since her team beat the #1 team in the nation.  Maybe co-players of the week would have been appropriate  ;)

ps. I am thinking the owners of D3hoops.com should sending some of us checks in the mail for making so many hits to the site in the last 36 hours :)

The Annihilator

Yes Champ, I really posted that. I was not insinuating that Duoss should have 10 blocked shots a night. If she did that, she would be in the NBA. I simply meant that she was a very very good player for D3 and she should have dominated in the paint, and she did for the most part. As for Buechner, she was out of control and terrible at defense, but was in the right place at the right time (a lot). Becker was pretty good, but again, out of control. Lechault had arms the length of a giraffe's neck. She was good at changing shots but not very basketball saavy. I'm simply stating my opinions and it makes me laugh that everyone is getting so defensive (no pun intended)!!

The Champ

I guess that in the WIAC, if you get selected as player of the wee, you must be:

A. A very very good player.

B. Out of control.

C. Terrible at defense.

D. Have arms the length of a giraffe's neck.

E. Not very basketball saavy.

F. Lucky.

FWIW:

Rachel Becker was an All WIAC selection in 2005 and 2006 (HM)

Nathalie Lechault was an All WIAC selection in 2005 (HM) and 2006 (DEF)

Lindsey Buechner was an All WIAC selection in 2007 and 2008 (HM)

Kelsey Duoss was an All WIAC selection in 2005, 2005 (DEF), 2006 (POY), 2006 (DEF), 2007 (POY) and 2007 (DEF)

I am far from being defensive.

I'm just having trouble believing that someone continues to claim that player of the week is an offensive award when clearly the facts show otherwise.

Couple questions.

Why is the Oshkosh-Stout game tonight at 7pm?  Is there something going on in the fieldhouse that pushed the game back?

Also, why is the WW-Oshkosh game going to be played next Wednesday instead of last Wednesday?  Did WW have trouble getting teams to play them and be forced to push the game back to get 25 games this season?

Graduation today at Stout.  You see, contrary to popular belief, the Stout kids have classes, and homework, and all the regular stuff that all the other schools have.

I think the Oshkosh thing has something to do with Oshkosh not playing during finals week.

OshDude

Today was commencement day at Oshkosh as well.

Speaking of UWO and Stout:

At the half.....

UWO 27
Stout 38

UWO actually had a decent lead in this one but faltered greatly in the last 5min of the half.

buf

UWEC over UWL, 66-52.  Great game for Witt as she had 23pts (5-6 on 3s), 6 assists and 3 steals.  She also broke UWL's press single handily.   Messick also played well along with Anderson off the bench.

Eau Claire native Hunter led UWL with 23pts.  However she needed 24 shots to get them.

EC has a tough task ahead of them next Saturday.  They play at D1 South Dakota.

UWRF

River Falls 78, Platteville 55

RF didnt have a field goal the first 8 minutes of the second half, but then Tiffany Gregorich took over.  It was awesome, she couldn't miss.  11-14 from the field and she finished with 29.

The WARHAWKS beat up on Superior 76-53.  Superior hung tight for most of the first half but WHITEWATER built the lead to double digits, 27-17 with 3:14 remaining and Superior never got any closer.  The lead was as many as 28 points, 65-37, with about 8 minutes remaining in the game.  Heidi Sontag led all scorers with 15 points while Kelsey Hendrickson (11 points) and Tiffany Morton (11 points) also scored in double figures.  Morton had her sixth double-double of the season as she added 13 rebounds.   WHITEWATER dominated the boards 39 (16 offensive) to 19 and forced the Yellow Jackets into 28 turnovers, 15 of which were steals.

The WARHAWKS return to action Wednesday when they travel to Oshkosh.

Apologies if I hit a nerve or something. I just always get a kick when people who aren't on the team they are talking about use the term "we", but I understand the psychology behind it. And I will cease with the ribbing of Stout's roster history if it is just going to lead to swearing. Moving on.....

Any big holiday trips for teams? Looking outside, I'm thinking Arizona would be nice right about now.

SWEARING!! Real nice stoutguy.  I am pretty offended.
If you can't ignore an insult, top it; if you can't top it, laugh it off; and if you can't laugh it off, it's probably deserved.
