I was wrong earlier.  These officials are actually making $145 each for their efforts.  That means that teams are paying $435 a game to have officials work their games who do not even know the rules or choose not to enforce them.  I wish I had a job where I could make over $70 a hour and not have do it properly.

Well, just to play devil's advocate...

This is not always the case, but I am aware that many times officials travel 1 - 2 hours (I know for a fact that there have been officials at Stout games that have 2 hours travel time) each way to officiate a game.  Now I realize that many people commute to work (I commute 30 minutes each way), but I'm also working 8 hours once I get there.  I also choose where I live and where I work.

An official officiates the games that they are assigned.  I also believe that they arrive well before the start of a game, but they are usually gone very quickly after the game.  This is only my opinion, but I think that in many cases an official has 5 - 6 hours invested to earn that $145.00.

I am sure they are paid mileage, as they should be, but that only reimburses them the same as any other person traveling for business.

The officials do not get paid mileage.  The used to, but that went out the window a couple years ago.  I appreciate the different point of view.  I used to ref myself, not in the WIAC, but I had some very difficult games to ref.  I just don't get how these refs ignore the points of emphasis.

Also, I know each of these refs get graded after the game and some can hold a grudge to a coach who gave them bad marks instead of trying to take the grading as simply things they need to do better.  There is a real problem with some of these officials.

I'll get off the box for now.

Which is exactly why officials not getting mileage is bad.   The same officials do the same "area" games all the time. Familiarity breeds contempt and of course, the old "homer" complaint rears its ugly head on a regular basis.

So the $70.00 per hour just got further reduced.

Although I haven't officiated BB, I have been a paid official in another sporting venue.  To be honest, I don't know that anyone really does it for the money, but for the love of the sport.

I know I couldn't cost justify my time and commitment for the dollars I was compensated.

Great Point.  The same officials ref the same area.  It seems like there is maybe a pool of maybe 6-7 refs that are always the refs in River Falls.  Same goes for Superior and WW.  It's a tough situation that can improve.

The reports of the demise of UWW appear to have been premature.

EC fell and fell hard to UWRF. All great compliments to UWRF for the game they played. They won it outright. Seems that EC was stuck on a formation to break the press that totally took them out of their game. All effort and energy was spent trying to get the ball up court rather than playing offense and scoring. While UWRF deserves all credit for their press, maybe EC would have been better giving the ball to Witt and letting her break the press as she has done for three plus years rather than spinning the wheels with a tedious formation that did nothing but cause EC to beat themselves. That said UWRF made their foul shots big time and also made many key shots that held EC far at bay in the end game. I hear UWW is alive and well and I eat the humble pie for my surmising their end. What goes around comes around! The last few weeks of the WIAC should be a wild time for all.

The WARHAWKS took a lead they wouldn't surrender 6-4 at the 16:15 mark.  They built the lead to a high of 16 points and the half ended with them holding Stout to just 19 points and leading 34-19.  The second half went pretty much the same way as the lead continued to grow to a high of 27 and Stout was never closer than 20 for the last 15 minutes of play.  Stout shot 25% the first half and barely better 27.5% in the second half.  The Stout starters went 3-30 from the floor with Hirssig getting all three early in the game.  It was a sloppy game as the two teams' similar styles of play led to 48 turnovers and 12 jump balls.  The WARHAWKS dominated the boards 50-34 which included an 18-12 advantage on the offensive end.

Kelsey Hendrickson led three WARHAWKS who scored in double figures with 13 points.  Tiffany Morton finished with her 12th double-double 12 points, 12 rebounds in 17 minutes of play.  Morton is within 1 double-double of tying Vanessa Reider's school record.  Heidi Sontag also scored 12 points for the WARHAWKS who finished 40% from the floor.

Hirssig and VanVreede led Stout with 11 points.  Hirssig finished with 8 rebounds.

This was a good defensive effort by the WARHAWKS.  Hirssig was generally smothered on the baseline when she got the ball and finished the game 3-12 from the floor.  Stout got some points off the bench but the starters, excluding Hirssig, couldn't score.

Foul trouble limited Morton to five minutes on the floor in the first half and only 12 more in the second one.

I think we've still got a little fight left in us.  :D

Stunning loss for UWEC.  With that result and the UWW win over Stout it almost makes the UWSP loss to Stout irrelevant.  Point is back on top by two games and likely in the best position for a Pool C, if necessary.

The team that really benefitted was Illinois Wes who now should be #1 in the region for sure.

Tough road for EC today.  EC played their top four kids an average of 34 minutes yesterday.  I imagine they went straight to South Dakota from River so most likely didn't get there past midnight.  Going to be a tough game today.  I think the game can do seen on the South Dakota website.  There is a link on the women's WIAC schedule page.

Looks like WW got healthy in a hurry yesterday.  I am wondering if they zoned Hirrsig or how she went from fantastic to average?

I don't think it is too early for this.

If the conference tournament started today

1 Seed (Bye) Stevens Point 11-1

2 Seed (Bye) Eau Claire       10-3

3 Seed          Whitewater     9-3
6 Seed          River Falls        5-7

4 Seed         La Crosse         9-4
5 Seed         Stout                7-5

SP and EC would get first round byes and then host in the 2nd round when the tournament re-seeds. A lot of things are most likely going change as La Crosse must still play at Stout, WW@RF, SP@EC and WW.  There are a lot of interesting match-ups out there.  I am not sure if Platteville can beat one of the top 2 seeded teams, but they need to if they want to be able to make the tournament.  I would guess this is our 6 teams in the tournament.

Good Point.  IWU has to be ranked 1 in the region.  I think Point is 2, EC is 3, WW is 4.  Wash U and Chicago will most likely round out the rankings.
