Oshkosh will be getting a new assistant next season.  WARHAWK assistant coach Pete VonAllen will be joining the Titan staff.

That post makes me think of the question, how many teams in the WIAC have full time asst coaches as opposed to part time asst coaches.  It would seem that those with full time asst coachs would have a huge advantage as those coachs would be around campus a lot more for recruiting help, meeting with players, etc.  Is Coach VonAllen going to be full time with the new position.  That would certainly be a huge plus for the Titans program It would be an interesting question to look at the differences between assistant coaches with regard to the men's and women's teams, also.  On a different note.  Janet Blair (phoenix rising) didn't your daughter, Liz Eldred attend UW Stout and UW GB.  scholarships, so tI would think, as a mom, that you would have some insight into the recruiting process and what factors (ie. tuition, geographic location cetc) come into play with regard to what college to choose... Of course UWGB can offer athletic hat ould make a big difference with costs..etc

Yea, Phoenix Rising, I would love to hear you expound a bit regarding recruiting, scholarships, etc.   Talk to us

Once again, Michigan Tech puts together a solid recruiting class made up of 3 Wisconsinites.  That puts the total number of Wisconsonites at 11 for the entire roster.  Tech continues to steal away kids that could be solid DIII players here in Wisco.  Obivously it's hard for our DIII schools to compete with the scholarship opportunity at Tech, but I still maintain that the top 3 WIAC teams are more competitive than Mich Tech ever will be.

They may be recruiting a lot of Wisconsin players but evidently they aren't recruiting the right ones.

Just announced 7/10...

UW Stout Women's BB had the 25th best average GPA in DIII!

QuoteThe Blue Devils finished with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.364 to finish No. 25 among Division III programs. UW-Stout was the only Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) team to make the list and one of two state schools to earn the award.

The other WI school was UWGB with a 3.317 in DI.

Does MI tech play many WIAC schools. It would be interesting to see how the WIAC matches up against them, or any other D2 schools for that  matter.  I think the WIAC has done well in the past against D2 schools.

Michigan Tech hasn't played a WIAC school since at least the 1997-98 season and probably longer.  I quit looking at that point.  They have done quite well against Finlandia though.

Michigan Tech went to the NCAA Elite Eight this year and is typically nationally competitive. Parkside had two great recruiting classes in a row winning 18 games a year ago (and beat the 2nd ranked team in the country) with half a roster of freshmen. Winona went to the NCAA Tournament and has a strong class of Wisconsin kids coming in.

Very few of you have any clue about Division II basketball. Don't speak about what you don't know about.

I am going to have to agree here...look outside the WIAC for a change and do some research

It  was meant to be a joke in response to jam's comment.  Truth be told I have little interest in the athletic programs at Michigan Tech.

UWEC has fared well lately:

2-seasons ago, UWEC wins against D2 St. Cloud St, 86-78

This past season, UWEC wins at D2 Duluth, 67-52

This past season, UWEC wins at D1 South Dakota, 62-50

Re: recruiting practices.

I'm probably not the best person to ask. Elisabeth wasn't that heavily recruited; everyone was looking at Jolene Anderson at the time (but wouldn't you think a coach watching a player who's two assists shy of a quadruple double against Jolene would take some notice?). Elisabeth's high school team had just completed half its season, going undefeated and finally getting ranking in the state, when she tore her ACL (the night T came scouting, as a matter of fact). She got calls from a couple of junior colleges and Northland; she'd had some letters from other schools that she never followed up on. In the end, Mark Thomas was the persistent one. If it hadn't been for him, I don't know if she would have gone on to school at that time. She was pretty blown away by the injury--physically, emotionally, mentally. I credit Mark's continued interest in her--even going so far as to send all the forms she needed to apply to Stout--to keeping her head above water. I think, in the end, a senior in high school is going to be most influenced by the coach that makes regular contact and takes the extra time to help wade through the paperwork and planning. The hand-holding definitely was a plus for us. She also knew a player on the team, and that was nice. T was paying enough attention that he sent a get well card, signed by the team, after the (first) surgery. It impressed her; it impressed us. He did everything right, in my mind.

I can say with a great deal of certainty, if a coach makes an appointment to talk to a player and shows up 15-30 minutes late, he or she is likely not really interested in the player. Beware; something else is going on, no matter what kind of excuse the coach gives.

Scholarships. What scholarships?
