Took in the EC intra squad scrimmage. Underneath looks great. Linder and Messick both look seasoned and confident. 6'5" Ellen Plendil did well also. The big question for EC is gaurds. Things here looked OK. EC game tomorrow with St Benedict could go well. There are several freshman and sophmores who looked very good in the scrimmage. Alot of hieght withthis team - 4=5 players over 6 ft. We will see what tomorrow brings. If EC can get by St Ben's and St Norbert, the schedule gets manageable allowing the team time to gel more. Might see a pretty good start for EC if they get by the first two games.

UWEC still has issues at the guard position. No points from beyond the arc until late in the game.......no dribble penetration in the first half and terrible perimeter defense. A good "opening night" crowd had nothing to cheer about in the first half and for most of the 2nd half.

They have work to do!

EC falls to St. Bens tonight, 74-67.  As Bucky pointed out, some really poor perimeter defense in the 1st half.  St Bens had wide open 3-shots throughout the 1st half.  EC did play better in the 2nd half.  EC played a lot of "new faces".

In other action,

UWL over Weaton, 65-57.  The St Bens transfer (Frank) goes for 17pts, 9rebs.

UWO gets a layin plus a foul shot from Heidi Baerenwald with 2sec left to win over Lake Forest, 66-64.  Baerenwald finished with 28pts, 9rebs

UWP over Millikin, 68-61

UWRF almost gets a triple digit spread against Crown, 113-27.

Point over Viterbo, 68-48

UWW over Loras, 89-75.

The WARHAWK women jumped out to a 20-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game and cruised to an 89-75 win over Loras.  The WARHAWKS shot 51.5% from the floor including 8-18 from beyond the arch.  Nicole Bundy was 6-8 on three-pointers and finished with a career high 32 points.  Dana Thompson also finished in double figures with 22 points and led the team in rebounds with 7.   The WHITEWATER defense came up with 15 steals in the game.

EDIT: My bad Chantel Burg led the team in rebounds with 9.  Burg,a sophomore, jumps well and is very athletic.

Bears rule

Well after one game here is what we know.

Top three SP,WW and Stout. Why do they even play the games? Nothing changes.

EC, LX and RF still in the hunt.

Plat, Sup and Osh getting better and pushing others.

I know its early but we will learn alot in the next week.

I hope the WIAC wins every game this next week.

UWRF

I saw the last 13 minutes of the SP-viterbo game on Tuesday.

Couple thoughts:

-Pointers look beatable.  Ill be surprised if they finish in the top 3.

-I felt like the Pointers have a lack of athleticism.

-Viterbo drove the lane at will. Just couldnt finish.

-Viterbo was in the game until they committed a plethora stupid turnovers on the perimeter.

-Congrats to Coach Egner on her 500th win!

Carroll over UWO, 68-61.  24 turnovers hurt UWO.  Baerenwald has another good game.

I think it can be a little deceiving looking at the last 13 minutes of a game and making a prediction.

It was Viterbo's fifth game, and SP's first.  Also, I am not sure how many of the SP's top kids were in when the game was a 15+ game and they have a couple games this weekend.

Bears rule

Big weekend for the WIAC. Going into This weekend the WIAC overall record is 8-3, 73% winning percent.

I see the WIAC going 9-2 this weekend.

Stout 2-0
SP 2-0
RF 1-0
LX, Sup, Plat 4-2

I agree with the earlier comment about how teams look the first few games and who they are playing.

Anyone want to trade for Jay Cutler?

Bears rule

This weekend in the WIAC did not go as good as I thought.

Here are my predictions with the actual results.

I see the WIAC going 9-2 this weekend. ACTUAL 7-4

Stout 2-0- actual 0-2
SP 2-0- actual 2-0
RF 1-0- actual 1-0
LX, Sup, Plat 4-2- actual LX 1-1, Sup 1-1, and Plat 2-0, total 4-2

This weekend went about as I thought except Stout, 0-3 start to the season. I still expect them to be in the top two in the conference when all is said and done. I know both teams they played this weekend were good teams, but to lose by double digits both nights, wow.

I need to see more from WW, but I think they are for real. We should learn something about EC over the next week.

Looks like Plat may have something going on there. LX loses to a good team in the Championship game, SP just keeps getting it done. RF, who have they played? But, they sure are taking it to teams. Sup still without there best player and winning.

Slow start for the BlueDevils. Some of their best years have started the same. Tough competition and then Point to start the season. Cripes.

Whats going on with Stout?  I can understand the losses to higher level teams, but losing to Carroll?  Was this just a tough road game on a back to back or what?  Looks like it was close, but to have 31 turnovers something has to be up.  They have a gimme this weekend against St. Scholastica, but if St. Bens makes the final it will be a very tough game.  Stout better start winning otherwise their in-region record is going to be tough to bring back up.
