Point with what appeared to be a comfortable win over Stout at Johnson Fieldhouse.  (I don't think I've ever seen a sentence like that before.)  Champ? Stoutguy? Can you fill us in on any details?

Well, to play the part of the smart-ass former English teacher, It's actually not a sentence!  But I digress:  I did the men's game, so didn't see the women but people who did tell me that we shot poorly, couldn't make a free throw, and our young point guards really struggled.

Touche! My English teacher mother would be very disappointed in me.

Stevens Point came out of Johnson with a tough, tough road win.  To my surprise the officials actually started calling hand checks, as the teams combined for 49 fouls.  SP did a great job on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 45-41.  SP has some size, but no where compared to Stout.  Also, a big reason Stout didn't keep this closer was their lack of ability to make FTs.  10-31 on FTs at home is an absolute shocker.  You couple this with the outstanding play of Flease, 17pts and 9rbs from a pg, and Petersen, 20 and 10, then it is no surprise Point won going away.

Stout has a tough opening conference schedule and they really need a win on Saturday against WW.  Starting 0-2 is hard enough in the WIAC, but dropping those first two at home to teams who you are going to battle for that conference title would be almost impossible to come back from for the Blue Devils.

As stated, this game was won at the FT line.

Hat's off to SP for making their shots at the charity stripe.

Not only was Stout only 10 of 31 from the stipe leaving 21 points on the table, they missed the first shot of too many 1 and 1's.

Too many fouls (many bad for both teams) for any flow to the game.

I feel for the players on both sides - they had no idea what constituted a foul.  No consistency from the crew that was officiating this game.  Calling hand checks that were so light you could barely detect contact was made on one play, then not calling a flagrant foul on the next.

I'll leave my comments at that.

Hello WIAC folks,

I'm an Illinois Wesleyan fan and I just wanted to let you all know how impressed I was with Stevens Point a week ago.  In our game, the Pointers were scarier than Wash U had been a week before.  I generally only see WIAC teams during the postseason, so I can't compare SP to any of your other teams--but their winning any game does not surprise me.  They are solid and well coached.

Sounds like some of you are noticing what I am about officiating this season--under the basket, it seems that anything goes, while hand checks in the open court are called.  Is this a trend?

Looking forward to the IWU-WW matchup in a few weeks!

WHITEWATER 68
LaCrosse 50

WHITEWATER never trailed in the game.  In the first half the WARHAWKS overcame 32% shooting from the field with 11 offensive rebounds and 11 steals to lead 30-23.  That's as close as the game would be as the WARHAWKS built a double digit lead early in the second half and maintained it to the finish.

Dana Thompson led all scorers with 29 points and pulled down 10 rebounds.  She also had an assist, a block and two steals.  Kelsey Hendrickson and Nicole Bundy each added 9 points.  Hendrickson, Chantel Burg and Heidi Sonntag each had 4 assists and Hendrickson recorded 7 steals.

Now, now, let's not go spreading falsities.  It was 2-0 UWL to start.  Both teams have some work to do, UWL obviously with more.  They have got to be stronger with the ball.

My bad, the stats hadn't been posted on the website when I posted and all I had was a box score and faulty memory.  :D

EC gets a win over UWO 52-44.  Close game throughout, with EC usually leading by about 5 points.  Both teams very sluggish offensively in the 1st half.  The score was 20-17 at the half.  Things picked up a little more in the 2nd half.  UWO had the lead down to 1 late in the game, but EC made the plays they needed to make to pull out the victory.  A good contribution by freshman, Bingea.  Linder played well down the stretch.  Still too many turnovers.   EC needs to find a way to cut those down.

It's not exactly like the classic EC-OSH battles from the past, isn't it.

Should be interesting to see how many fouls get called in the WW-Stout game on Saturday.  With the way both teams have pressed in the past, I wouldn't be shocked to see over 60 fouls.

Last year these two teams met twice and there were only 39 fouls called in the first game and 35 in the second.

Point/Stout games last year had 32, 34 and 48 fouls (in the playoff game).

I sure hope they let the ladies play basketball....

Stout over WW, RF over SP. EC over LAX. Great day in the WIAC, RF is now the team to beat (for today)

great win for stout controled most of the game do not think whitewater ever lead in the game

UWRF

River Falls made a believer out of me today. I was skeptical of their non-conference schedule but they showed today that they can hang with anyone.  This was the first time I saw the falcon women and I think they are going to surprise some people. Coach Holbrook has done a wonderful job of bringing in players that play defense and can score going to the hoop. The 2-2-1 press with gregorich and hansen at the top is going to give lots of teams fits.  Some big games coming up.

Kim Stokke made the first basket of the game - a sweet 3 pointer - and Stout never did trail (consider this a cheap shot at you, BW... ;D).

Twice in the first half, WW did cut the margin down to a single point, but the half ended with a 6 point advantage for Stout.

Shooting in the first half was 33.3% from the field and behind the arc and 80% from the freethrow line in 10 attempts for the Warhawks.

Stout hit 37.8% from the field, 40% from 3 point land, but once again struggled from the charity stripe with 14.7% on 7 attempts.

In the second half, the closest the Warhawk ladies ever got was 4 points.  At a little under 4 minutes that was the difference, but then Stout went a 2 minute 10 - 5 run to stretch it to a 9 point lead with about a minute to go.

WW tried the old fouling bit from that point on, but Danielle DeWitt hit 4 of 4 FT's, and Kim Stokke added 1 more over the final 60 seconds for a 65 - 54 final.

Leading scorers for Stout - Julia Hirssig with 18 and Kim Stokke with 13.  Kelsey Hendrickson was the only Warhawk to hit double digits with 11.  Hirssig also was chairman of the boards with 12 rebounds for a double double.

Despite the prediction of a real high foul count because of the rapid style of play, fouls totaled only 24 for WW and 21 for Stout - a total of 45.

Final shooting percentages:

WW - 30.8, 25 and 77.3

Stout - 38.3, 31.3 and 51.9

Stout as a team is shooting only 59% from the charity stripe for the season.  They really need to clean this up soon, as it was problem last night in the win, but was a major problem in the loss to Point were they only hit 10 of 31 for 31.3% in a 15 point loss.

Next up, a roadtrip down to LaCrosse - who fell to UWEC last night 55 - 61.

Bears rule

Well, that was exciting. I said early in the preseason the winner will end up with 3-5 losses. Early on it looks like SP, WW and Stout will beat each other up. EC, LX, Plat and RF will knock one off every so often. Not sure what to make of the RF team yet. Sup and Osh we will have to see about them. Both had tough games to start the WIAC play.

This next week some great matchups again. It looks to be quality match ups each week.

Bring you tool box each game girls because you will be going to work.

Earlier this season I was talking with a conference referee and he told me that he had heard from a couple of his associates who had seen the Falcons play that they were pretty impressed with them and that they going to make some noise in the conference season.  Judging by the early results the comments were spot on.
