Final scores:

RF over EC, 70-59.  EC with 34 turnovers.  Both  Mesick (23pts, 12reb) and Halama (18pts, 11rebs) with double doubles for EC.  T Gregorich with 20pts for RF

Stout makes a late comeback and downs UWL, 68-65.  UWL was up by 9 with 5min left.  Hirssig with 20pts.  Dewitt hits a big 3 with 20sec left to give Stout the lead.

UWP rolls UWO in the 2nd half for a 63-49 win.  Balanced scoring for UWP.  Baerenwald gets 19rebs and Wenig with 15pts to lead UWO.  UWOs juniors struggle.

UWW over Point, 76-71.  Hendrickson and Sonntag combine for 43pts.  Bandow leads Point in scoring with 18.

Made the trip over to La Crosse to see the game and just got home...  Roads were MUCH better today than yesterday!!!

If you look at the stat page, one would think that the Stout/La Crosse game was pretty physical based on the 47 penalties.  But it wasn't...  The officials were calling every touch and disrupting the flow of the game for sure.

At least they were treating both teams fairly equal (25 penalties for Stout, 22 for La Crosse).  But I think it hurt La Crosse more as they had both Larson and Churchill foul out.

Maslowski and Stokke both had 4 fouls each for Stout, so they were close also.

Hirsigg lead all scorers with 20 and had 9 rebounds - missing the double double by 1 board.  In addition to hitting the late 3 point for the lead, DeWitt had 12 points, 6 rebounds, 5 blocks and a steal.  Windt and Maslowski added 10 a piece.

La Crosse had 4 players in double figures, led by Churchill with 14.  Van Handel had 13, Litrenta 12 and Taylor 10.  Frank led both teams with 14 rebounds and had 4 blocked shots.

Next up, UWEC on Saturday.

UWRF

It was ugly, but we'll take it.

Score was 2-2 for about the first seven minutes of the game.  RF was trying to score 5 points on ever possession rather than just take their time. This was especially true at the end of the game.  They had a 10 point lead and refused to run down the shot clock. The first half was filled with bad passes and the second half with bad possessions.

River Falls couldnt score inside against EC's Twin Towers.

EC turned the ball over quite a bit but I bet that 20 of the TO's were forced by the Falcons. They did a nice job of getting their hands in the passing lanes and taking clean swipes at the basketball.

RF needs to play some more complete basketball if they want to make a run at the conference championship.  I think they have the pieces.  Brittany Gregorich has looked great at times, but then hit streaks where you can tell she is a freshman.

Tiffany Gregorich is having a fantastic start to the year, if she keeps playing at a high level the Falcons will be tough to beat.

Point started the game with a 17-3 run before the WARHAWKS, trailing 22-9, made a 21-3 run behind 10 points from Heidi Sonntag and 7 points from Kelsey Hendrickson to lead 30-25 at the half. WHITEWATER gradually built the lead to 12 points 59-47 with 8 1/2 minutes remaining but Point rallied to pull within 2 points 64-62 with 2:49 to go.  But Sonntag and Hendrickson scored 10 of the final 12 points, 7 from the free throw line, to hold off the Pointers and WHITEWATER pulled it out 76-71.

Sonntag finished with 22 points with 7-10 from the field and 6-6 from the line.  Hendrickson finished with 21 points and 7 steals.  Playing for the injured Dana Thompson, freshman Kortney Kumerow finished in double figures with 12 points.  Nicole Bundy only scored 6 points but her 11 rebounds, including 6 or the WARHAWKS 10 offensive rebounds, led both teams.

Losing Thompson is a big blow to the WARHAWKS but some of the others are going to have to step up.  Last night several players made significant contributions and that's what it's going to take the rest of the way.

Saw a first last night: A player called for a foul on her own teammate. Other team even got bonus FT's, too. I think they should just start playing the Benny Hill theme song after every whistle.

WHOA!!! You got me - called for a foul on her own team. Let's see so If I am fast enough, I can have my players keep fouling each other and really rack up the points. 15 players x 4 fouls each (minus the first 6 non shooting fouls)  would be as much as a 54  point lead - and noone fouls out. That said, they were calling walks in the first half last night at RF like there was no tomorrow.
EC used Feagon last night in the second half to bring the ball up. Was a great improvement. Turnovers went down and the scoring went up. EC (my favorite) is young. They are coming around some. Messick is having a great year. If EC can get better guard play, they could be OK for tournament time.
OH WITT and Framstad we miss you.
I have seen EC, RF, Stout, LAX and UWO so far. Stout and RF are the most tenacious. It is going to be an interesting year. I'm surprised that Stout seems to struggle from time to time.

Since I like to harp in these forums about poor free throw shooting in close games, I'll begrudging tip my cap to the Blue Devils tonight. They made 22 of 26, for 84.6% from the charity stripe. When a team shoots that well, it deserves to win the close games...

And, although it wasn't quite as close, the UWL men beat Platteville tonight, 84-70, in part because, during the last 5:30 minutes, the Eagles scored their last 22 points from the charity stripe...The Eagles finished 28 of 32, a stellar 87.5%...

So, future WIACers, ask Santa this year for maybe a sky hook and definitely a book on improving your free throw shooting!  ;)

The Champ

We weren't able to make it to the Stout/UWEC game - Mrs. Champ's plane from Calgary, Alberta was about 3 hours late for the second week in a row... >:(

Last week, with the game in Menomonie and a 4:00 PM start, we could make it in time.

We were able to listen to the whole first half and part of the second half while driving home from the Twin Cities before 880 AM got "unlistenable" (is that a word?).

What we heard over the radio (with brilliant analysis by our own Stoutguy) was a game with once again too many touch fouls and no consistency by the officials in what they were calling (I specifically remember one no call they talked about where Stout's Maslowski should have been called for a foul).  The WIAC seems to be rampant in their lack of consistency in officiating this year - other than the consistency of calling touch fouls.

Other things I noted from listening (and confirmed by looking at the stats):

1.  Stout was gunning 3 pointers in the first half and didn't seem to be able to find the basket - 2 of 14 shooting for 14.3%.

2.  UWEC frequently turning over the ball - many unforced.  18 turnovers in the first half.

3.  Plendl's two quick fouls had her sitting most of the first half.  With only 2 minutes of playing time in the second half, she fouled out.

Stout never trailed in the second half, but UWEC did tie the game up 7 times.  The last tie  was at 3:40 remaining after Halama made a jumper and was fouled and made the +1 for a 3 point play.

The game went scoreless for the next 58 seconds until Maslowski hit a 3 pointer to put Stout up by 3 at 2:42.

Stout's lead bounced around between 2 - 5 points over the next 2 and a half minutes until Freagon fouled Maslowski with 9 seconds left.  Maslowskit hit both shots from the charity stripe to make it a 4 point, 2 possession game.

Freagon made a 3 pointer with 2 seconds to go, but that was the end of the game.

Would have been great to be there for the hard fought win!

I haven't personally noticed anything different this year but perhaps hand checking is a point of emphasis with the league officials.

UW-Whitewater 86, UW-Superior 65
With the exception of one tie 9-9 the WARHAWKS led the entire game with the YellowJackets.  A three point play by Cortney Kumerow created a double digit lead, 29-19, at the six minute mark of the first half and Superior never got any closer than 12 points for the rest of the game.

Kelsey Hendrickson led all scorers with 24 points (4-6 three pointers) and had 3 steals.  Nicole Bundy finished with 18 points (4-7 three pointers).  Kumerow also scored in double figures with 16 points and had a pair of steals.  Led by Chantel Burg's 8 rebounds the  WARHAWKS controlled the boards 38-26 including 11 on the offensive end.  Heidi Sonntag had 6 assists to lead the WARHAWKS and Burg added 5.

Well, the other team would have the 54 point lead then, since they got the FT's.

I have come to the conclusion that there will be a lot more ugly wins on the way for the Falcons.

They are not going to pound anyone.  They shot 4-42 from the field in the first half (9.5%). 12 POINTS!!!

Thank god NW isnt very good.

Holst dominated in the second half with 17 points. T. Gregorich added a quiet 15.

Sounds like RF is going through what Stout, EC, maybe even SP has gone through, a tough stretch of trying to play good BB. Just a few games where they just cannot get it going.

I see they had a 15 point lead on Oshkosh with about 5 minutes left and only won by one. What do they say, "its easier to be hunting then to be hunted". This may apply to them.

Lets see how the Xmas break goes for the WIAC.  Then back at it early in January.
