UWEC drops another one out west, 50-43, to Pacific Lutheran.  Turnover margin only -2.  However, they shot very poorly.

UWL hits 2 FTs with 4sec left for a 1-point victory over Dubuque.

UWO wins a pair out in Arizona.

PRF2009A

2 wins for UWL this week.  I expect a solid second half season from this team.  They are very athletic and seem to have a balanced scoring attack coming together to go with an extremely solid defense.  An 8-4 finish to the season would put this team at 9-7 in the conference. I would call that a very successful year for this team that will not lose any players heading into next season.

The only thing that scares me about the Falcons is their inability to put teams away. They let Northwestern and Oshkosh (EC too) hang around, both teams they should have pounded. RF is going to lose a game or two that they shouldnt cause they are going to allow a inferior team to have a chance to win late.

After looking at the UWEC v PLU box score, I noticed that that the PLU head coach is Kelly Warnke, an old UWO alum and coach.

I also saw that UWW played Southwestern University in Vegas, who is coached by ex-UWO coach Pam Ruder and also a UWW alum.  Interesting how both coaches schedule WIAC teams after they've left the conference.  The WIAC coaching tree just keeps getting bigger.

IF they could go 8-4 that would be a great year. That's a pretty high expectation but I guess it could be possible. I'm not believing until they beat someone good; their non-conference schedule was pretty weak.

It's a long read, but it will give you some very good insight to the man and his passion for sports!

This guy is one of my best friends - and I know it's well known on this board that I am staunch backer of Coach T - but if you read this, you might start to understand why!

Stout is lucky to have a coach so committed to the university.

WARHAWKS...58
Illinois Wesleyan...87

This game was probably even uglier than the final score suggests.  The WARHAWKS were outplayed in every way imaginable.  There's a good reason Illinois Wesleyan is the top ranked team in the country.  They are very, very good.  Their pressure defense forced 27 WARHAWK turnovers and prevented any sort of offensive flow for forty minutes.  They reached the bonus within the first seven minutes of each half and ended up shooting 32 free throws to just 12 for the WARHAWKS.

Kelsey Hendrickson was the only WARHAWK to reach double figures with 16 points.  She also had 2 steals to give her 57 on the season.  IWU was led by Nikki Preston, a player who came into the game averaging 9.9 points, who had 19 at the half on 4-6 three point baskets, 7-8 from the free throw line and finished with 25 points.  It was that kind of a night.

The WARHAWKS will host Clarke College on Wednesday before River Falls comes to town for a Saturday men and women double hitter.  Hopefully we can put this embarrassment behind us, refocus and get back on track.

RF defeats Stout in OT.  Stout was down by 9 and came back to tie to force the OT.

Just got home from the game.  Hard fought game by both squads.

River managed to take leads in both the first and second halfs - up by 6 in the first half with under 6 to go and Stout closed it to 25 - 23 at the half.  In the second half, as buf mentioned, River was up by 9 with 6:30 to go when Stout started an 18 - 7 run to take a 2 point lead with 1:16 left on the clock.

River took the ball down court and missed a pair of shots, but got the rebound on both.  Then Stout forced a turnover and it looked like Stout might sneak it out before a steal by Tiffany Gregorich.  She was fouled with 16 seconds left - made both free throws to knot the score at 59 all.

Stout had 16 seconds left, but failed to get the ball to go through the hoop on the last shot in regulation...

OT was back and forth, and Stout trailed by 1 point with 9 seconds left and was forced to foul.  Both FT's were made making it a 3 point game and Stout's last second shot missed - game over.

Congrats to River on a well played game!

A sidenote - about midway through the 1st half, Freshman Lauren Demski went down with what appeared to be a knee injury.  She was taken to the hospital, but I don't know how serious the injury is.

Hopefully it isn't too bad and she can return to the team this year!

Good for Stout taking RF in to OT.  Sounds like it was a battle, but look for WW to challenge River come saturday.

Shocking score out of PL with EC dominating the Pioneers.  Tonja must have enstilled some hard work over the holiday break, and hopefully they can keep the TOs to a minimum in their upcoming games and continue to bring home the W's.

Not sure what happened in Point, but it must have been a cold night, shooting only 35% from the floor.  They've got to tighten it up for Saturday when LX comes to Berg.

WARHAWKS...82
Clarke...53

Two halves couldn't be more different than the two halves of this game.  In the first half the WARHAWK starters struggled mightly.  Clarke came out and flat out dominated the WARHAWKS scoring first and building a lead that grew to as many as 11 points before the WARHAWKS, behind bench players, rallied and took their first lead, by one, with just six and half minutes remaining in the half.  However Clarke retook the lead a short time later and built it to 5 points with two minutes to play.  Once again bench players rallied the WARHAWKS and a layup by Megan Theune tied the score 33-33 at the half.  Whatever Coach Carollo told her team during the break must have had an impact because the WARHAWK starters came out on fire and went on a 16-5 run to start the second half and never looked back.  By the eight minute mark the lead had grown to 20 which is as close as Clarke would get the rest of the way.

Cortney Kumerow led all scorers with 16 points and led the WARHAWKS with 8 rebounds and a pair of blocks.  Nicole Bundy added 15 points, Heidi Sonntag 14 points and Theune had a career high 10 points.  Clarke had 31 turnovers which included 14 steals by the WARHAWKS.  Sonntag led that department with 6 and Kelsey Hendrickson had 3 bringing her conference leading total to 60.   Hendrickson also had 4 assists to lead the team.  The WARHAWKS had the advantage on the boards 47-38 and from the free throw line 16-26 to 6-15.

BIG BIG BIG game this weekend in Whitewater. I am disappointed that I wont be making the trip. I will for sure be listening to the game.

I expect it to be a battle. If RF just slows the game down and plays their basketball I think we can win that game.  Their biggest problem is that we try to go to fast. Thats the kind of game they dont want to get into. Stout did it to them last night and the Blue Devils just about won the game.

RF does a great job of creating turnovers but after they get the turnover they immediately try to turn it into 7 points.  ::) The Falcons are much more suited for a slower pace game that they can control with their press.

Im extremely excited to see how this game turns out.
