Will talk to this when I have more time. Saw Stout play 3 games in the last couple of weeks. Hirsig is absolutely the best in the WIAC. I am really impressed with Kayla Windt. It is a pleasure watching this freshman play. I think the best freshman in the WIAC also one of the best talents I have seen this year. She is super fast and just flows. Also very smart and in full control on the court. I realize UWW is looking better and better but Stout is now my favorite - maybe the tourney. They got some great players and are very mature team. Wish the coach would back off DeWitt a little - looks like high school - Mark (my two cents.

Stout over Northland last night, 79 - 67.

Another 20+ scoring night for Hirssig, with 9 rebounds in 26 minutes of playing time (with only 1 foul - important after fouling out against Platteville).  9 of 10 from the floor and 100% from the charity stripe.

Joining Hirssig in double digit scoring were Stokke with 15, Windt with 12 (5 of 5 from the floor with a pair of 3 pointers) and DeWitt with 11.

Stacy Bush came off the bench late in the first half  -  hitting a pair of baskets and a free throw for her 5 points - all in the last 30 seconds to take Stout from a 32 - 35 deficit to a 37 - 35 lead.

Have to agree with JMM on the performance of Windt.  She's an absolute pleasure to watch play defense (she leads the team in steals)!  And if she can keep her scoring up like it was last night (12 points vs. a 5.2 ppg average) she will be an offensive weapon also...  I look forward to watching her throughout her Stout BB career.

With the WARHAWKS playing at Oshkosh tonight I got to thinking about which teams have been the top four over the past few years.  Historically the league had been dominated by Eau Claire, Stevens Point, Stout and Oshkosh.  However since the 2006-07 season the WARHAWKS have moved up and replaced Oshkosh as one of the four.  Since the 2006-07 season WHITEWATER has the best conference and overall record at 43-10 (WIAC) and 82-19 (Overall).  Eau Claire has the second best conference record at 40-13 and the third best overall record at 70-32.  Stevens Point has the third best conference record 39-14 and ranks second with an overall record of 79-19.  Stout ranks fourth in both conference (37-17) and overall records (65-33).

Coach Keri Carollo has the fourth best winning percentage among active coaches .627 and ranks 12th all time.

After I posted I sat and I thought to myself, "now I'll wait for Champ to come and tell me that T has the most wins of all the WIAC women's coaches active or retired."  You're slipping    :D ;)

EC over Superior, 57-33.

Both teams played zone, so the pace of the game was really slow.  EC won this game by flat out shooting better than Superior.  Mesick and Bingea led the charge for EC.  Hart played well for Superior.

UWL picks up a big win @ RF, 67-52.

WIAC shacking out some. UWW, UWSP, Stout looking good. UWRF slipping. Saw UWEC tonight. UWEC may be in tune by tournement time. The young team is now up to UWEC standards on defense - they are very, very good. The offense is coming. As I said yesterday, I like Stout.

I didn't need to remind you of that...  It's a well established fact that there isn't a WIAC Head Coach that can catch T's most wins number this year, even if T were to retire today.

There's only one that is even close, and my money says she retires before T does, and she's 27 wins behind.

#3 amongst the active coaches would have to win 20 games per season for a decade after T retires.

#4, 5 and 6 would have to win 20 games per season for about 14 years after T retires.

T will win #400 this season.  I really hope it's a home game!!!

WHITEWATER...76
Oshkosh...64

Oshkosh led 6-5 early before Chantel Burg made a layup to give the WARHAWKS a lead they would hold for the rest of the game.  However the diiferential remained close through the entire half as the largest lead the WARHAWKS were able to build was eight points before the half ended with them on top 37-33.  That four point difference was as close at the Titans would get as the WARHAWKS gradually built the lead to double figures over the first ten minutes of the second half and with one exception maintained a double digit lead the rest of the game.

Kelsey Hendrickson led all scorers with 23 points.  Burg finished with a double-double 17 points and 10 rebounds.  Cortney Kumerow and Nicole Bundy also finished in double figures with 13 and 10 points respectively.  The WARHAWKS had 13 assists on 26 made baskets, a season low 10 turnovers and 8 steals.

Hey Champ -

Just for giggles, why don't you crunch the numbers and see how many wins it will take for Coach Thomas to match the top winning percentages of some of the best coaches who have been in the league???  ;)

Here's the rest of the Stout sked, for those keeping track at home... (If I did my math correctly, Coach Thomas needs three wins for 400.)

Jan. 16 at Oshkosh
Jan. 20 at Superior
Jan. 23 home vs. UWRF
Jan. 27 home vs. UWL
all winnable games, so the Devils need to go 3-1 for him to accomplish this feat at home...
and here's where it gets interesting...
Jan. 30 at Whitewater - on the road vs. pupil
Feb. 3 at Point... vs. #2 all-time in wins; tough to win in the Berg
Feb. 6 home again, vs. Oshkosh, on Alumni day, which would be a great day to do so, but I'm thinking Devils fans would want it to happen earlier, because if this is the day it does happen, it would mean Stout is on a 2-4 pace over the last six games...
Feb. 10 home vs. Superior
Feb. 13 at Platteville
and,  to close out the regular season
Feb. 20, home against UWEC

we shall see how it plays out...

If it comes down to the last regular season game, I will be surprised... But never-the-less, I'll consider making a trip to the Fieldhouse to tip my cap that day to Coach Thomas if happens that day...

You want me to explain that one to you again???  We went through that a long time ago....

T took over a program that hadn't won a game the two previous seasons, and had never had a winning season.  It took him a few years of developing and recruiting to take them from 0 and 32 the previous two seasons.  His first season was 3 - 13, second season 4 - 12, third season 6 - 10 and then 9 - 7 in year 4 - the first winning season in Stout WBB history.

Considering what T started with, a .659 through last season is a darn good winning percentage.

Not every new HC gets to take over a team that's already locked and loaded to make playoff runs every year that had gone 16 - 0 in the conference the year before he/she took over....

Yup, Tonja has the winning percentage stat at .739 through last season.  I'm happy for you and her...

Not taking any game for granted, but the River game is when I would like it to happen.  That would make for a 5 game winning streak and guarantee the Blue Devils at least a share of second place in the WIAC.

We let the game in River Falls get away from us last week, and I'm looking forward to the rematch at Johnson Field House and possibly going a game up on UWRF at the same time.

If it comes down to the last game of the regular season for T to get #400, I will buy YOUR ticket to the game.... :o

Yawn. No, Champ, you don't have to explain the history of the Stout program again.

Nothing like a little needling you to get your feathers up, though. Ha.

Bears rule

Will someone show us the average winning percent over the past five years for each program?

If you go back to STP national title year in 2001-02 then Point's numbers get ridiculous: 189-43 (.815)

One of my favorite WIAC coaching stats is that it took Shirley Egner 11 seasons to win her first 150 games. It then took her 6 seasons plus 11 games to win her next 150 games. Same number of wins in almost half the time!

Just Bill -

How far back do you go as far as WIAC hoops? If I remember correctly, you're an old-timer historian-like poster, correct?  ;)

That being said, if my assumption (I hate that word. Ha.) is correct, how would you compare the talent on the Pointer 2002 National champs team with some of the other top teams in league history? I'd be interested to see your take on how some of those teams might match up against each other?

For instance, how do you think the '96 Titans champs would fare against them? And pick a UWEC/WW/Stout team, too, just to make things interesting...

Others, chime in, too.
