That was fun, we got to pat each other on the back saying how tough the WIAC is.

I wonder if there is a way to look at non-conference records over a few years. Not sure if that would mean anything.

I tried the Massey ratings.
http://www.masseyratings.com/rate.php?lg=cbw

Top 30 teams by ratings- (wiac has 3 in top 14, and 4 in top 30)

WIAC 4 - SP#7, WW#9, RF#14, LX #30-my cut off
NESCAC- 3 Amherst, Colby,Bowdoin
MIAC - 3 Gust Adolphus, Concordia Moorehead, St Benedict
NWC- 3 George Fox, Puget Sound, Lweis & Clark

No other conference has 3 or more.

There we have WIAC top dag.

Bears rule

Lets talk about something fun. Final WIAC standings.
Here is were we are at half way through.

2009-10 Standings (Through 1/20)
School WIAC
W-L Overall
W-L
River Falls 6-2 14-2
Stevens Point 6-2 14-3
Whitewater 6-2 13-4
Stout 5-3 10-7
Eau Claire 5-3 6-11
La Crosse 4-4 12-5
Platteville 2-6 9-8
Superior 1-7 6-10
Oshkosh 1-7 6-11

My predicted final:
1-2- anyway you want to sort them
WW
SP

3-4-5-6- this will be the dog fight-they all have issues and strengths
RF
ST
LX
EC

7-8-9
Plat
Osh
Sup

By the way, I still believe the winner ends up with 3-5 losses. So we will not know until the last week of play. All games are big, but it seems like each week someone looks greats and someone else stumbles. Then next week it is someone else.

Bears rule

Holy cow, the Massey ratings are it.

At the bottom of the link about it ranks all conferences.
WIAC #1
I guess this will end this discussion. This maybe better then the BSC poll. (ouch, let the discussion start again)

EC gets a road "W" at La Crosse, 68-62. Mesick and Plendl again the key, but Laura Olson chipped in with 13 and had just one turnover. 'Golds had 14, but that's a pretty good number for them lately. They also knocked down their FT's down the stretch.

Can't figure out why Mesick is playing D3 basketball.  She would be a welcome addition to a ton of D2 teams.  Wouldn't be a stretch to say she is the best D3 player I have ever seen play over the last 4 years.

I have to agree that Mesick is a very good player.

But you haven't watched much WIAC Women's BB if she is the best player you have seen play over the last 4 years.

I think one could argue that she hasn't even been the best player on her own team over the last 4 years.

Players like Heidi Arciszewski, Michelle Burns and Heather Witt could seriously contend for that distinction.

The Champ

In a rematch of a game earlier this month that went into OT before UWRF pulled out the win, the UW Stout Runnin' Lady Blue Devils made sure that no OT was necessary yesterday in Johnson Fieldhouse.

River started well, pulling out to as much as a 7 point lead in the first 5 minutes and holding that lead til midway through the first half.

But with 8:48 left in the period, Julia Hirssig made good on a layup that put the home team up by 1.  At the end of the half, Stout went into the locker room with a 4 point, 39 - 35 lead.

As the second half started, neither team was able to get a ball through the hoop.  Missed shots and turnovers were what was happening for over 2 minutes until Kelli Hilt of RF sank a 3 pointer to cut the Stout lead to just 1 point.

The Falcons went on to tie the score twice over the next couple of minutes, but with 13 minutes left to go Stout built their lead to 10 points and from that point on the lead bounced around from 8 - 16 points for the duration of the game.

Kim Stokke led all scorers with 22 points - 14 in the second half - and 8 of those were from the charity stripe.  Julia Hirssig scored 20, and had a career high in rebounds with 18.  Danielle DeWitt added 14 points for Stout.

Maranda Dohrn led the Falcons with 16 points and 8 rebounds.  Tiffany Gregorich netted 10 points.

Next up, UW La Crosse on Wednesday!

There's a LOT of WIAC players in recent history who would have succeeded at D-II. Even some that would have done well at a mid-major D-I.

Thank you everyone for pointing out your team's best players.  Discussing elite players/coaches seems to be quite a touchy subject in Wisconsin...

Reminds me of the response you get when you bring up Favre to a packer fan. ;D

From Bill Simmons this week:

Saddest subplot: A Favre Super Bowl appearance with an original NFC Central team not named "Green Bay" would be the football equivalent of dropping an atom bomb on Wisconsin. Polarizing, depressing, anger-inducing, bitter. ... It's going to elicit every crummy emotion a sports fan could have. And if Favre hoists the Lombardi trophy, Packers fans are going to react like someone just bought them a treadmill: abject fear, horror and confusion.

It's not so much that discussing good players is a problem.  It was your implication that somehow Messick shouldn't even be playing in this league.  The posters are just pointing out that while she's good, she's not as particularily special in the WIAC as you may seem to think.

Sorry,  didn't literally mean she shouldn't be playing in the league.

Using the idea that she could play at a higher level to try and say how good of a player I feel she is.

River Falls is leaking some pretty serious oil here.  Lost 3 of the their last 4 in the league by 14, 15 and 13.  Thats not even close.  Looks like the league doll is coming back down to Earth after a 14-0 start.  With road games @SP, LX, EC and a home game with WW, they could be in danger of missing homecourt in the first round.

Big game Wednesday in WW with the Pointers coming to town.  The Pointers haven't lost since Dec 11 against WW.  Be interesting to see if Thompson is back and if she is back what kind of shape she is going to be in.
