Isn't basketball funny...not even two weeks ago SP is left for dead, and then after winning the WIAC and two games in the NCAA tournament, they are no doubt the best in the league this year, least in my mind.

Funny how fast things can change.

Lax dominated Point yesterday.  That's about all there is to say about that.  Point's coach is rightfully worried about her team's play heading into the playoffs and she made sure the whole gym knew it after the game.

I definitely said they should be worried at the time.  They did not show up that day and Point's coach knew they needed to change their mindset asap.  She screamed at the team for about 5 minutes after the game in front of everyone that was in the gym that day.  I had never seen a coach go off like that in front of the public.  One thing is for sure, she got her point across and the team responded.  Hopefully they can keep it up!

Left for dead might be strong, but I don't recall any poster here who picked them to win the WIAC Tournament. Most even had them going out in the semifinals. Few coaches' teams rebound better from a bad loss than Shirley Egner's teams.

Congrats to Julia Hirssig, the 2010 Jostens Trophy winner.

I'll second that!  We all knew she was the best player in the WIAC and it's neat to know that a national committee felt she was the best player in the nation.  What an incredible finish to great collegiate career.

Hold on, this award does not mean she is the best player in the nation.  This award looks at athletic accomplishments, grades, and community involvement.  That being said, I think this award is much sweeter than the national player of the year as this deals with character and shows what kind of person she is off the court.  The grades and community involvement will help her in the future much more than the athletic ability.  Much deserved award.  Congrats to her!

I have had the pleasure of interviewing her,  riding on the bus with her, watching her interact with her teammates, opponents, and coaching staff, and meeting and talking to her family.  Forget about the fact that she has accomplished more on the court than any player I have ever watched, she is the finest person I have ever watched play the game of basketball.

The Champ

Coach T called me yesterday to let me know that Julia won.  The two of them will be headed out to Salem next week for the award presentation.  I hope that Julia can lift the darn thing (just kidding) as it weighs about 62 pounds according to T... :o

I've watched and cheered for her for five years and am proud to say that I know her.

As stoutguy posted, she is a great person - even if she had never played basketball!

from the official announcement:

QuoteHirssig Finishes Impressive Athletic and Academic Career

"[Julia's] accomplishments are many and impressive, but it is her drive and commitment to raise the standards of her teammates and fellow students that is most impressive. Julia's ability to balance both her academics and athletic goals has been a real lesson to me and our program. She has laid down a blueprint for our program that will be a part of UW-Stout Women's Basketball forever," said Head Women's Basketball Coach, Mark Thomas.

UW-Stout senior forward, Hirssig, a native of Rochester, Minn., has just wrapped up an impressive career. A three-year starter, Hirssig owns the school scoring record with 1,738 points. She has started 79 consecutive games and has played in all 108 games since her freshman year. A pre-season All-America pick, Hirssig led the league in scoring and rebounding this year. She dropped in 21.4 points per game and grabbed 10.6 rebounds per outing. Hirssig also ranked first in NCAA Division III with a .682 (217-318) field goal percentage.

Over her four years, Hirssig has collected several athletic awards. She is a two-time First Team All-WIAC member and was named the 2010 All-WIAC Player of the Year. Additionally, Hirssig was tabbed the WIAC Player of the Week two times this season. She collected 14 double doubles, scored in double digits in 26 of 27 games, scored more than 20 points in 20 games and more than 30 points in three games.

In addition to her athletic accomplishments, the Hotel, Restaurant & Tourism Management major boosts a 3.959 grade point average in the classroom and has just as many academic honors. Hirssig is a two-time First Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® pick as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Additionally, she has earned the Chancellor's Award for Academic Excellence seven times.

Hirssig is also a prominent figure within the community. She volunteers at two different elementary schools and at the Salvation Army. On campus, Hirssig serves as a student housing resident assistant and as a Quantity Foods Production lab assistant. She also works with the Blue Devil Buddies program and is a UW-Stout Career services volunteer.

Jostens Trophy Celebrates 13th Anniversary

The Josten's Trophy is a joint creation of Jostens, Inc., of Minneapolis, Minn., and the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. The purpose of the award is to honor the true Division III student-athlete - the athlete that shows excellence in the classroom, on the playing floor and in the community. In addition to the Trophy, the Wooldridge Scholarship, a $1,000 donation, will be presented in the name of the winner to his/her institution. The scholarship was named after Dan Wooldridge, a Salem Rotarian and retired Commissioner of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, as a way of honoring him for his long-time dedication to Division III athletics.

My bad, I thought the Josten's award was considered the DIII Player of the Year but I see now that it's a little bit different.

We'll forgive you, BW...

As punishment, you can hand carry that award all the way back from Virginia... ;D

So is there any doubt how good Hirssig is. The best. Thrilled for this wonderful person. Hooray Julia.
