Probably River Falls (Cindy Holbrook) and Eau Claire (Tonja Englund) are the most defensively minded teams.  RF has led the league in scoring defense three of the last five years and finished fourth one other.  EauClaire has led the league twice and finished second and third in two other years.

I personally think Eau Claire is most disciplined/structured offensively though Stevens Point (Shirley Enger) is a close second.

Both of Platteville's leading scorers, Nemitz and Stotmeister, are seniors as was Schneider who was fifth in scoring average.  They do return Poad (FR, 3rd), Wolf (Jr, 4th) and Lawinger (Fr, 6th).

I would flip the two but agree; Point and EC the most disciplined offensively. Point is so consistent with what they do and who they plug in there; that's why they get my vote.

I think it's extremely difficult to look at numbers and say who's the most "defensive-minded." The teams you mentioned along with La Crosse for the most part play a bit slower offensively (maybe not RF so much I didn't see them this year); which automatically lowers the defensive PPG. Whitewater recently and Stout during the Hendricks/Duoss years might not have finished at the top of the PPG stat but controlled the game and the tempo because of their defense. I'm not always convinced defensive field goal percentage is the answer because if you force a lot of turnovers you're not necessarily awarded in that stat either. Points per possession would probably be most accurate but we don't have that in stat crew. This year Stout was dead last in defensive PPG but 4th in defensive field goal perecentage. I'm not saying they were a great defensive team ... I'm just not sure it can be easily qualified.

I appreciate all the input.  My daughter is looking to transfer to a school in this area, which is closer to home, after playing her freshman year in the Pacific Northwest in the Northwest Conference!  She made the decision less than a week ago not to return to her previous college.  We simply don't know a lot about the programs in the WIAC!

PM me and I can give you a contact who might be able to help answer your questions a little better ... and don't worry it's not a coach in the league who will try to sell to you  ;D

I would have to say that SP runs the best structured offense.  It seems to change a little bit every year depending on personal.  EC runs a good offense, but it seems like it more sets, which I think is hard to get into a flow on offense.  Running a half-court offense with sets mixed in off dead ball situations is ideal in my mind.  After all, many times last year EC had a very difficult time scoring, but that their youth most likely has more to do with that than anything.

Last year Stout pretty much forced the ball into Hirssig (really tough post) and she scored it.  WW scored a lot with their senior guards.  Both these teams might have a tough time scoring with what they have coming back this year, but I don't know who they really have coming back.

RF plays very good defense, as does EC, as they try to slow the game down more through a full court press this year.  They don't pressure the ball, but just try to keep it in front of the.  Stout and WW both tend to use a full court press to speed up the game and trap well. SP usually plays solid half-court defense and have had guards in the past who pressure the ball extremely well.

That being said, with a league of very good coaches, I would want my daughter to play for Coach Egner at SP.  There is really no bad choice for the most part in this league, but I just like her style and passion.  She doesn't let freshmen or sophomores wilt on the bench till their junior or senior year and she wins in the post-season.  She is a proven winner and that team does a lot for the community.

Hope this helps out a little bit.

Don't forget the academics part of your "student-athlete."  ;)

I'm not sure I can speak for the certain areas that each school has as strengths regarding possible majors, but that is something to look into to see what a good fit might be from that aspect...

Also, depending on if you are from a small town, or a larger town, the size of the city the WIAC school is in might make your daughter feel more at home, too...

But the WIAC is a great conference for those of us whom like to watch women's basketball, that's for sure.

Welcome aboard, if that is indeed the case!

An excellent point.

There aren't any athletic scholarships in the WIAC, so the primary thing should be getting a quality education while actually playing the sport you love.

So, her choice of major should be of some importance in the selection of the school, as well as the placement rate of graduates.  It's great to get a degree, but if your education doesn't help you get a job in your major - what good is it?

There are several very excellent schools in the WIAC, and several excellent WBB programs.

If you haven't already found it, I suggest that you look at the WIAC WBB website:

http://www.wiacsports.com/wbasket/index.html

There is a wealth of knowledge that can be gleaned from that site about the various programs (offensive, defensive, etc.) and the stability of their WBB programs.

Hope that you daughter can find the right school and be part of the WIAC.

Again, I am very grateful for all of the input.  She comes home from the Pacific Northwest on the 14th of the month, and is planning to try and visit some of the schools in the WIAC the following week.

She is an Education Major, and that is definitely a strong consideration for school, as that will be her career for life after college is over.

The input has been very helpful!

What a homer.  ;)  It doesn't matter what major you named, BW would have said that anyway.

And at some schools, she can even be buried as far as 20 deep on a roster! If that's what she wants, you can also refer to badgerwarhawk's last post.  ;)

Thanks for all the input.  She has picked several schools and has contacted coaches to visit.  You all have been a wealth of information that will help her make a decision.

Good luck to her.

I hope everyone missed me, the hater is back in the house! I know someone was saying they couldn't wait to hear my thoughts on the Platteville situation. Good move in making a change, I gotta think this new coach will be a bit more pro active on the recruiting front then the last one. Also heard Kuhle is trying to sue UWP for wrongful termination. I don't know how wrong it is to fire a coach that never finished higher then 7th in a 9 team league. Easy to be critical, but come on, this was about results, nothing else.
