I hope everyone missed me, the hater is back in the house! I know someone was saying they couldn't wait to hear my thoughts on the Platteville situation. Good move in making a change, I gotta think this new coach will be a bit more pro active on the recruiting front then the last one. Also heard Kuhle is trying to sue UWP for wrongful termination. I don't know how wrong it is to fire a coach that never finished higher then 7th in a 9 team league. Easy to be critical, but come on, this was about results, nothing else.
Seems like that will be pretty difficult. Aren't state contracts at these schools year-by-year ... therefore it's a renewal process. I'm not sure they need much reason to non-renew. But you're right, this wouldn't be a tough one to argue from Platteville's side. I still think it's a difficult place to get girls to attend, so we'll see if Wilson can figure out a way.

The people in SW Wisconsin seem to believe that their region has a wealth of girls basketball talent for UWP to tap into, but as an outsider I've just never seen that area of the state that way.  I think it comes from the success of the small school programs down there like Cuba City, Barneveld, Pecatonica, Black Hawk, etc.

If you think about it, UWP is already getting much of the best talent from that area, but what has it amounted to for them?  Other than Tiff Flesch I can't think of a real top tier WIAC player from that part of the state that played at UWP.

I think Wilson will need to hang on to the good local kids, but reach out further to pull in her best players.

In order to get top tier d3 kids, Platteville needs to get Madison area kids. No doubt there are some very good d3 and d4 programs in that part of the state, but there are probably about 5-6 kids total (that might be generous) every year in the state of WI that come from d4 schools and actually make it as college players. To go 25-0 in the WIAA at the division 3 level and in the SWAL conference doesn't mean you're putting out players like the Madison/Milwaukee/Fox Cities schools are. If a kid is a good D1 WIAA player, they will be more then ready to compete at the D3 college level, whereas many smaller school kids need more time to adjust and to learn how hard to play at that level. Point being, you've gotta branch out and get kids from bigger schools. Kuhle waited for players to come to her and that obviously didn't work out.

Anyone think Jenna Pitt will make an impact at UWSP this fall coming off major knee surgery?  I'm very curious to see how she bounces back and am anticipating her getting a lot of minutes as a freshman.

The Champ

When I was over helping Coach T at the race track last week, I got to see the Josten's trophy that recently arrived for Julia Hirssig.

Weighs in at about 65 pounds - that granite is HEAVY... ;)

Julia was walked across the stage for graduation in the afternoon session on Saturday, so I didn't get a chance to see her - or her ring.

The ring should look something like this:

Former DC Everest standout and Winona State player, Sam Barber will be transferring to UWSP for the coming season. That's a huge pick up for Point! Barber has 3 years of eligibility left and will probably be a 3 time all conference player.

Thanks to all fans of WIAC Womens Basketball for thier input and guidance.  My daughter visited a number of WIAC schools this past week.  Made her decision over the weekend, and was accepted this morning to her choice.

This looks like a great place to be, based on the info/help that was offered. :D

Come, come.  We'll figure it out sooner or later.  Who'd she pick?  Clearly you've done your research so no one will be critical for doing what's right for her.

I believe that cements SP's status as conference favorite.
Should at least bump them up a spot from 4th on that one list we talked about earlier this Spring.

Barber should be a great WIAC player. I always thought she was too slow for scholarship ball and not quite athletic enough. She'll be great for Point. Does like to shoot a lot but they will be able to use her scoring.

Just heard this morning that the Barber kid to UWSP is not a done deal, they may be looking around a little more yet. I see wissports.net is reporting it but I think used the word "likely."

hoopsjunkie- I assume you heard it from a pretty reliable source?

hoop_junkie

Yea, heard it from several different sources. If she went d3 I don't know where else she would go. Seems to me that the kids from that area have tunnel vision on UWSP only. Me personally, I think she is a good d2 type kid and needed to wait 1 more year to get on the floor. 5'10 w/big time physical strength that can shoot the 3, come on. Maybe Winona isn't the right place for her but there's a school out there in d2 that she could play major minutes for as a sophomore.

Wasn't sure where else to post this but I'll try here.

Is anyone aware of the type of scholarship money a program like Cardinal Stritch has? I see they put together a nice class again this year and have some nice success at their level. Just curious if any of you with daughters who played (or just insights in general) would have any idea. It looks like about 28-30 grand a year to go there.

It looks like they have a really good incoming freshman academic scholarship set-up. Just wondering how private schools are surviving (and thriving) in this economy. Not to mention the fact they have an awful facility to play in.
