I like it when a coach honestly says that the team did not play well.  What I don't like is a coach not giving credit to an opponent.  Lois saying "I don't know if WW is that deep"  when the bench points total was something like 43-12 is absurd.  Coach Thomas on our show this morning made some very valid and honest points.  To paraphrase, he said that we are not very good right now and these are the players we recruited and it is my job to make them more competitive.  No excuses.  I liked the interview.

2. There doesn't seem to be much love for WW.  Probably due to the fact that they have owned UWL.

Really?  Last 20 games:  9 wins for UWL and 11 for UWW.  That's as close to an even split as you can get.

UW-La Crosse vs. UW-Whitewater

1/17/01 La Crosse 63-56 WW
2/17/01 La Crosse 92-75 LC
1/16/02 La Crosse 81-55 LC
2/16/02 Whitewater 66-55 WW
1/22/03 La Crosse 61-49 LC
2/19/03 Whitewater 64-60 WW
1/20/04 Whitewater 73-72 LC
2/18/04 La Crosse 89-74 WW
1/15/05 Whitewater 69-66 LC
2/12/05 Whitewater 69-54 WW
11/30/05 La Crosse 76-64 WW
1/25/06 La Crosse 80-69 LC
11/29/06 La Crosse 65-61 LC
1/24/07 Whitewater 75-60 WW
1/9/08 Whitewater 92-62 WW
1/30/08 Whitewater 99-87* LC
1/7/09 Whitewater 70-61 LC
1/28/09 La Crosse 62-53 WW
12/2/09 Whitewater 68-50 WW
2/3/10 Whitewater 69-64 LC

Compare that to Point at 2 - 18 or Stout at 3 - 17.  Now that's being "owned".

Mark that up to me not being around very long.  Definitely the frustration of losing 3 times to WW in the last year then.

Looking forward to the EC game.  If there's one monkey UWL wants to get off it's back right away it's this Eau Claire team.  Also, I expect Stout to play tough today.  I see them putting together a very good effort.  Maybe that's wishful thinking on my part though.

I give Thomas props for taking responsibility publically.  There are some coaches who never do this (when they clearly should) & always have a bunch of excuses.

UWL defeats EC in Zorn, 64-50.  The game basically came down to shooting, UWL @ 38%, EC @ 29 %.  Just a terrible 2nd half shooting display by EC in the 2nd half

JMM

While the EC vd LAX game came down to shooting, LAX just out and out stopped EC. Took the underneath game away, didn't have a problem with the EC defense and really out hustled the Blugolds. Maybe the quotes from the LAX coach after the WW loss were true, maybe LAX should have beat WW. I was cetainly impressed with LAX - best team I've seen this year. Been to at least 12-13 DIII games. Also, I thought Englund was out-coached. LAX attacked Messick on offense and her foul total was high. Plendil also fouled out. Inside game was taken away. Nice job LAX

No problem.  There are a number of us here that have been following the WIAC for more than a decade...

Congrats on a very solid rebound game against the Blue Golds!

Now I need my Blue Devils to get a win - and your Eagles are next....  We should have a chance - WW beat you by 21 and we only lost to them by 19... ;)

Stout needs to play better, and I hope they do.  But your win last night was very impressive.  Hopefully Coach T watches the tapes of how you did it and can do the same!

Great win for UWL yesterday.  It really was a must win for them.  They needed to get that monkey off their back.  First time I've seen UWL play a complete game.  They were disciplined and played within their offense which was key.  Staying under 27 turnovers helps a bit too.  :D

I was impressed with EC as usual.  Christiansen (sp?) is a great addition.  She is a shooter and has good range.  Messick kind of disappeared in the 2nd half.  You could tell she got frustrated and Churchill played great D on her being undersized.  When Plendl hit a few shots from the free throw line area I thought it was going to be a longgg day for the Eagles.  She never got on track after that though.

Should be a good game against Stout as usual!

I'd like to thank the Eagles for simply handing us the ball and not making us work for any of the 16 steals.  The energy we saved undoubtedly help us be rested enough to play Stout style.

Great win by the WARHAWKS last night.  I suspect it's been a long time since we beaten Stout that soundly.  Stout's last lead was 9-8 in the early stages of the first half.  The WARHAWKS responded with a 10-0 run over the next four minutes and never looked back.  Stout cut the lead to single digits with the first basket of the second half but after that the WARHAWKS maintained a double digit lead which grew to as many as twenty four before the game ended with the score 83-64.

Taking a page from the Mark Thomas coaching book the WARHAWKS played fifteen players twelve of whom scored.  Dana Thompson led the way with 14 points and led the team in rebounding with 6.  Chantel Burg and Cortney Kumerow each scored 10 points.  Eight WARHAWK players scored at least 7 points.  Jamie Swanson led the team with 6 assists and 7 steals.

Key stats:
Shots: WW 75 (45%),  Stout 57 (37%)
Turnovers: WW 14,  Stout 27
Bench points: WW 38  Stout 16
Points in the paint: WW34  Stout 6

Just because you play a lot of players doesn't give you depth  ;)

Just kidding. But if you can play that many kids successfully; that's the definition of depth

badgerwarhawk

I didn't actually say we were a deep team.  Our style of play dictates that a lot of players are going to play.  We're actually quite a young team and it's likely we'll play inconsistantly at times during this season.   At Stout  and LaCrosse we were able to put it all together and played quite well.

The most pleasant surprise to date has been the reduction in the number of turnovers.  After averaging 20-25 in the first three games we've had 15 or less in the last three.  For our style and the inexperience we have on the floor for significant minutes that's really pretty good.

I was extremely impressed with the Pointer women yesterday. I could see them making a Final Four run. They dont quite have the offensive play from their guards that the 08 Warhawks had, but i think Peterson is a great player.  Flease is absolutely smothering on the defensive end.

I was refering to the quote from that La Crosse Tribune article in conjunction with the numbers you posted.

Like I said, if you can play that many kids in a college game and be effective- that's depth. If they were losing a lot of quality just by sticking some kids from the end of the bench in; that's a different story. That does not appear to be the case with WW this year.

#20-  La Crosse
#25-  River Falls

Nice to see 4 WIAC teams in the top 25!  I can't remember if this ever happened last year, or does anyone remember the last time 4 were ranked?

Now if these teams didn't have to play eachother maybe they could all stay in the top 25 all year!

Just Bill

So last week, UWSP had lost to Milikin and they fell from 6th to 8th.  Seems reasonable.

This week, they went 2-0 and fell from 8th to 18th??  What am I missing?
