Eau Claire beat Platteville 45-43 last night.  I don't know a thing about bad fouls, turnovers, perimeter defense, passing or coaching.  Just reporting the final score because no one else has mentioned it.

EC survives @ UWP, 45-43, as UWP missed a 3 at the buzzer.  Ugly shooting as both teams shoot 28%.
Sorry badgerwarhawk ... buf beat you to it   ;)

Stout finally gets a WIAC "W"... ;D

80 - 70 over Platteville.  Freshman Sami Shoeder has a career (I realize it's a short career so far...) game and hits 31 points and 8 boards.  6 for 9 from point land.

Glad they finally got a WIN!!!

The WARHAWKS beat River Falls 72-63.  Both teams shot well in the first half.  River Falls finishing with 54% and the WARHAWKS close behind at 52%.  RF led 16-8 in the first five minutes.  WHITEWATER got it to 16-15 when RF came back with a 13-0 run.  The WARHAWKS gradually cut into the lead and after scoring the last six points trailed by a single point 40-39 at intermission.  WHITEWATER got the first basket of the second half on a lay up by Dana Thompson and the two teams exchanged the lead nine times in the first ten minutes.  The two teams exchanged leads and there were five ties over the next seven minutes when Kaitlyn Thill made a pair of free throws to give the WARHAWKS a lead they would not surrender with two and half minutes to play.   Including Thill's pair the WARHAWKS went 9-9 from the free throw and got an old fashioned three point play from Courtney Kumerow the rest of the game.  River Falls was cold from the field going just 15.6% of their second half shots.

Thompson had a double-double 13 points and 11 rebounds including 6 on the offensive end.  Megan Theune led the WARHAWKS with 15 points including 3 3-pointers.  Kumerow also finished with 13 points and Thill added 10.  Led by Katie Burton's 3 assists the WARHAWKS had 16 assists on their 23 made shots.  Defensively the WARHAWKS had 14 steals with Thill's 3 leading the way.  Nine of ten players to see the floor had assists and steals for the WARHAWKS

Stat of the game:  The WARHAWK bench outscored RF's 23-0.

Tiffany Gregorich led all scorers with 31 points.

Great game at Point yesterday with Point beating Lax 75-73.  This would have been a great win for UWL and now puts them in a tough situation for winning the conference.  No room for error.  Point definitely showed they were beatable last night but excellent guard play seemed to carry them.

Frank went for 32 pts and 12 boards which is a great sign for UWL if she is contributing on offense.

The EC-Stout makeup game takes place in a couple hours.  A month ago I would have said that EC would probably win fairly easily.  But since then, it looks like EC has struggled a bit and Stout has improved (which was expected due to their youth).  I still think EC wins, but I think it will be close.

After a terrible 1st half, EC rebounds nicely in the 2nd and cruises past Stout 71-50.  EC trailed 28-25 at the half but used a 35-3 run (24-0 within that run) to take a commanding lead.  A switch to a zone in the 2nd half is what I think turned this game around.  Mesick led EC with 17pts and 13rebs (she had 0pts at the half).  Rempert had a solid game as well.  Rawdon led Stout with 18pts.

I was at a seminar last night - so couldn't watch or listen.  My wife texted me with an update at the half and then I called her when I got on the road - the score was 34 - 27 - Stout.  Thought that an upset was in the making at Zorn....

While we were talking, EC started their run, and before we hung up (driving conditions were less than ideal on I-90 in Southern MN last night) the score was 38 - 36 for EC.

She called me back with the final score - it was hard to believe that in the last 15+ minutes of the game that Stout only scored 14 points.

Kudos to the EC squad for an extremely well played second half.

Some key numbers that stick out at me:

1.  Messick held scoreless in the first half (only took 1 shot), but then hits 6 of 6 in the second half - along with 5 of 7 from the charity stripe.

2.  Shooting percentage - both teams shot nearly the same number of shots - but Stout only hit 23% in the second half.

3.  EC ruled the boards.

4.  Stout kept this thng close in the first half by stealing the ball 9 times.

No surprises tonight.  EC, Point, UWL and UWW all win.

The WARHAWKS scored the first eight points before the Titans scored the next nine and the lead changed hands four times over the next three minutes when the WARHAWKS took a 18-15 lead with just over nine minutes remaining in the half.  7-1 and 9-0 streaks by the WARHAWKS gave them a eight point lead 34-26 at the half.  The first ten minutes of the second half belonged to the WARHAWKS as they built the lead to nineteen, 54-35.  The final ten minutes belonged to Oshkosh as they chipped away cutting the lead to eight, 65-57, when the game ended.

Dana Thompson led all scorers with 28 points and added 14 rebounds.  Chantel Burg also scored in double figures with 11 points.  Kaitlyn Thill had game high 3 assists and 4 steals.  Thill leads the conference in steals with 76 and is sixth in assists with 49.

JMM

Hard being a blugold fan this year. No commetary except, when your team fights and fights and stays in there and recovers from a first half of playing like they are on numb or just ate a 12 course turkey dinner, if your the coach you might call some key timeouts to help them. Specifically with 11.3 seconds left ahead by 1, you call time out and set up a defense. Not leave your time to kind of waddle down the court and get beat by a free layup. Englund coaches the big picutre and groth of the team community, but does nothing on fundamentals. Hats of to the White water coach who used 2-3 time outs at critical times to advise her team. If Englund calls time out with 11.3 seconds and set up the defense, the Buegolds win and are fufilled.

Call a timeout at the end of the game to set up a defense?  I'm no John Wooden, but there's no way I call a timeout in that situation.  That is on the players.  Get back and play D.

Looked like they put up a heck of an effort and you are right that they sure keep fighting.  Definitely scared to see Eau Claire come to Lax next weekend.  That is definitely a trap game for the Eagles.

Think about her options for a second JMM.  Eau Claire was shooting free throws with 13 seconds left.  Her choices were 1. call timeout before the first free throw, 2. call time out between the two free throws, 3. call a timeout after the second made free or 4. let the game play out.  If she calls timeout in either the first or second options she ices her shooter.  She couldn't call time out after the second attempt because it was missed and the WARHAWKS secured the rebound.  So if she didn't want to ice her shooter she had no other option than to let the game play out.   You have the advantage that she didn't.  That being the advantage of hindsight.  She has to make a decision in real time.  I don't know her thought process but there are a fair number of coaches who don't believe it's wise to ice your shooter in a situation as critical as this one was.

WHITEWATER'S depth played a big part in this win.  Eau Claire had a slight advantage in points in the paint (34-30), second chance points (10-9) and despite having 26 turnovers to the WARHAWK'S 17 scored one more point off of turnovers (22-21).  Eau Claire made seven more free throws than WHITEWATER attempted (27-20).  Eau Claire out rebounded the WARHAWKS 37-33.  But WHITEWATER'S bench outscored Eau Claire 26-10.

Chantel Burg led four WARHAWKS in double figure scoring with 15 points.  Dana Thompson added 13 points and Kaitlyn Thill and Mary Merg had 10 and 12 points respectively.  The WARHAWKS took 63 shots to Eau Claire's 45.
