Here are the official predictions from the SID's, seems to me like they have LAX pretty high for a team losing all 5 starters:

2011-12 Preseason Predictions--Voted on by WIAC Sports Information Directors

  2010-11 Record
1.  UW-Stevens Point (6) 27-3 overall, 16-0 WIAC
2.  UW-Whitewater (2) 21-7, 12-4
3.  UW-River Falls (1) 16-11, 7-9
4.  UW-Eau Claire 15-11, 9-7
5.  UW-La Crosse 20-8, 12-4
6.  UW-Stout 10-15, 5-11
7.  UW-Oshkosh 12-14, 7-9
8.  UW-Superior 8-17, 2-14
9.  UW-Platteville 6-19, 2-14
(  )--First-Place Votes

Isn't LAX always overrated in the preseason polls?  Most overrated team in the WIAC year in and year out.  Never a contender, even when they should be.
UWSP is going to go 16-0 again.  And another deep run into the NCAA Tournament.
Good to see UW Sup isn't picked last.  Hopefully they keep improving.  They've got a good coach up there.

UWEC wins on the road against St. Scholastic, 68-58; the Blugolds trailed 31-30 at the half...

Ellen Plendl had a nice game off the bench, with 15 points and 14 boards. Courtney Lewis chipped in 12 off the bench... Sarah Bingea leads all scorers with 16... St. Scholastic had a pair of players who chipped in 10 points each, Mariah Hovik and Laura Amys...

Stats that jumped out to me - Blugolds were only 3-22 from the three-point line (13.6 %) and had 25 turnovers...

The Blugolds are looking to be more athletic this season, and plan to go coast-to-coast more so than they have in recent seasons....

Stout dominated last night, but it's just one game against a team of unknown strength.

19 players for Stout saw 5 minutes or more.  None of the starters had more than 15 minutes.  6 backups had double digit minutes.

Final score was 95 - 33.

The key to the game was turnovers - Stout forced Crown into 56 turnovers while only commiting 13 of their own.

Freshman Ronnie Moltzau from Eleva led the Devils with 13 points, on 5 for 7 shooting and connecting on all 3 shots from from beyond the arc.

Freshman Shelby Sterba started for the Devils and was 3 for 5 shooting with 3 boards in 10 minutes.  She did go 0 for 5 from the charity stripe - so she'll have to improve on that stat.

This is a very young team - it will be interesting to see which of the many freshman earn significant playing time.

Next game is Friday against Wartburg at Lakeland College's tourney.

It's going to be REALLY hard to win when you have 23 more turnovers than points. I guess I can cross Crown off my team's that might win a national title list. (Just kidding, they weren't on that list in the first place.)

The WARHAWKS opened the regular season with a convincing 82-60 win over Carroll University.  WW jumped out to a 15-2 lead in the first five minutes but CU crawled back into the game and cut the lead to two points with about four minutes remaining in the half.  WW finished the half with a mini-run and led by eight 37-29 when it ended.  The WARHAWKS but the game away with a 24-5 run in the first seven minutes of the second half and after that the lead was never less than the final twentytwo points.

Mary Merg led all scorers with 17 points and added 7 rebounds.  Courtney Kumerow finished with 16 points and led all rebounders with 8.  CU couldn't match the WARHAWKS size and was outrebounded 48-33 including 19-13 on the offensive ends.  Jamie Swanson and Emily Bestor each had 4 assists and Bestor finished with 4 of the WARHAWKS 14 steals.

The WARHAWKS will travel to Millikin University over the weekend to play Witworth and Millikin.

OMG, 53!  That stat alone should clear up any question of Crown's identity.  They're a bad basketball team

Looks like some of them are off to a good start.

Next game is Friday against Wartburg at Lakeland College's tourney.

This should resemble something more approaching a basketball game.

From now on, everytime I'm trying to describe a bad team, I'm going to use the phrase "team of unknown strength". In fantasy football this season, I definitely have a team of unknown strength. Yeah, that works.  :)

Hey guys...  I was trying hard not to say anything bad about the opponent... ;)

As BW posted, Friday will tell me more about the team.  I like another 50+ point win, but I'll be happy with a win where we learn more about some of the new players.

I hope this is a joke.  I'm going to reach wayyyy back to 2010-2011 when they were picked to finish 5th in the preseason and ended the season in a tie for 2nd and received a bid to the NCAA tourney.

That being said, 5th might be a little high for this team, but I don't see any strong cases for the teams ranked 6th or lower making huge improvements outside of Stout who you would just assume would be better this year with their history.  Without looking at it too much I think it's the top 3 and then all the rest this year.

Blue Devil Backer

was at the stout game crown only played  8  and seven were freshmen and the team was 0-25 last year and tallest on team was 5-8

PRF2009A, you are correct about last season.  They did over-achieve when they went to the Tournament.  However I still stand by my comments that they are in general the most over-rated program in the WIAC.  Hoop junkie brings up a really good point that there are schools with a lot less resources than LAX has, yet they are more successful.

quail1231

I'm surprised that no one has mentioned the UWO-Lawrence score from Tuesday night: Lawrence 56 UW-Oshkosh 65.  Is UWO that bad that they can't pull away from a program that's won 3 games in 3 years?  Lawrence lost to Marian by 30 last night.  Looks like UWO will be competing with UW Sup for last place.

UWW's win over Carroll was impressive.  I think Carroll averages almost 80 points a game in conference, not that that's saying much in the MWC though. But holding a team 20 points under their average is tough.

Just to clarify things, I think it's pretty obvious where Crown stands. More importantly, why is Stout scheduling them? I guess everyone needs a tune up game.

Probably for the same reason Superior did last year and River Falls the year before that.  They were available.

No arguments here that they have not been successful overall, just pointing out that your initial comment and how you worded it was pretty much entirely incorrect.

What resources do you need to be successful in D3 Women's Basketball?  I would argue that out of all collegiate sports it requires the some of the least amount of resources.  If your comment was regarding the UWL football program I would completely agree that they should be able to do much more with all the factors that Hoop Junkie mentioned.

In my opinion the biggest factor for success at this level is a good coach.  If they can recruit, generate some buzz, be embraced by the community, and be a factor on gameday the only resources needed are a ball and a court.  Look at Stout and Point.  They aren't successful because they have access to vast resources, it's because they have great coaches that have built great programs.

EC wins a nailbiter, 64-62.  EC trailed most of the game but made the plays down the stretch to pull it out.  Both Plendl and Bingea had good games.  Plendl had 15pts (6-6) & 17rebs while Bingea scored 23 on 11-16 shooting.  Need to get these two the ball more.

EC has had a rough start, but are 2-0.  Very tough opponent tomorrow, #17 IWU.
