And if they only played the back 20 minutes of the first two games, UWEC would be 2-0...

Which they are, after Laura Olson hit a key three with 30 seconds left to put the Blugolds up 64-62, which was the final score...

Again, the threes were ugly, 4 of 19, but Olson hit the winner, and had her 6 points on two of them... Turnovers were a bit better, as they only had 18 this time around... Sarah Bingea had 23 to lead UWEC, followed by Ellen Plendl with 15 and Nicole Christianson with 11, and nine assists... Plendl had a monster night on the boards, with 18, as the team had a 38-23 advantage in that stat...

Ripon was lead in scoring by four players in double figures = Erin Lind, 14; Jill Van Eperen, 12; and 10 each for Skye Gono and Kacie Cullen...

Next up for EC is game two of the holiday tournament tomorrow, against #17 Illinois Wesleyan, a Final Four team last year... Ripon will face Coe College, a team that made the Sweet 16 last year...

Hey, Happy New Hoops Year, buf!  ;)

Once again, you beat me to the draw, as I see the "someone's posted while you are doing so" message, and I figured it would be you...

Sure enough, it was. But I'm sticking with my original post because I don't feel like editing the darn thing to take out duplication from your's...  ;)

River Falls HANGS ON and navigates the "Storm" (Simpson College that is)

When I was reading the game story I thought I read the final score wrong. RF was up 22 late in the first half, but held onto win 79-73. Kinda scares me that this veteran squad couldn't put away Simpson until the very end.

Stout loses a nailbiter to Wartburg 59 - 54.  Sami Shoeder hit a 3 pointer with 7 seconds left to get within 1 point...  But it was nothing but FT's the rest of the game.

I'd have liked to see a win, but hopefully they can learn a lesson from a close loss.

The WARHAWKS took the lead for good after three minutes had been played and beat Whitworth 80-57.  It was close at the half 35-31 and Whitworth got within a single point early in the second half but after that the lead quickly grew to double figures reaching a high of 26 points before the game ended.  The WARHAWKS shot 65% in the second half.

Four WARHAWKS scored in double figures.  Cortney Kumerow's 15 points led the way.  Mary Merg added 14 points, Jamie Swanson 12 and Sam Quant 11.  Merg, Emily Bestor and Morgan Dahlke pulled down 5 rebounds each and Amy Mandrell added 4 in six minutes of playing time.  Kaitlyn Thill had 6 assists.  Thill, Quandt and Katie Burton all had 3 steals.

The WARHAWKS will play Milikin later today.

Also, how can anyone defend the UWL program? They're indeed the most underachieving team in the WIAC every year. Yes, we all know they made the tournament last year, but given their resources, size, location and quality of school they should be competing for national titles every year, not battling it out for 4th place in the WIAC. People can make all the excuses they want, but that's the truth. There are a lot of places out there in d3 doing way more with less, than Lax is.
Seems inappropriate for someone who coaches D3 in the region to be taking shots at a program on a message board.

The WARHAWKS dropped a 78-73 decision to Millikin.  WW led by four points at the half 36-32.  The second half was see-saw affair with 8 ties and 9 lead changes before Millikin took the lead for good with just less than five minutes to play.  The WARHAWKS thought they had tied the game with five seconds remaining when Jamie Swanson hit a long jumper however it was ruled a two point basket leaving them a point behind and Millikin made four free throws to close out the game.

Mary Merg finished with 27 points, 5 assists and 4 steals.  Kaitlyn Thill and Cortney Kumerow each scored 15 points.  Swanson had 5 steals.

Millikin had four players score in double figures.

Laura Olson hits another clutch three pointer with 50 seconds left to break a 44-44 tie, as the Blugolds win 49-44, snapping St. Norbert College's 45-game winning streak at home...

Eau Claire (3-1) took a 23-16 lead at half; St. Norbert's (2-2) had caught them by about the 7-minute mark left in the second half, leading by a point, 37-36, as the teams then basically played even down the stretch until Olson's three...

Sarah Bingea had 14 points to lead the Blugolds, while Ellen Plendl had 7 boards... St. Norbert had three players in double figures - Tasha Giese (13) and 10 each for Krista Hawkinson and Jamie Kuhl...

Numbers that jumped out were the 10 steals St. Norbert had, and the 7 blocks the Blugolds had... Stats were fairly even across the board and basically boiled down to a 16-of-40 (40%) shooting advantage for EC, vs. 14 of 46 (30.4%) for St. Norberts...

The Blugolds next travel to Mankato for a night game Saturday against Minnesota State University-Mankato.

The WARHAWKS rallied down the stretch and beat 17th ranked Illinois Wesleyan 80-72.  There were 7 ties in the first half as each team had leads between 5-7 points before it ended 28-28.  The WARHAWKS started the second half hot and held a lead for the first eleven minutes berfore IW took control and kept the lead till two and half minutes remained.  Cortney Kumerow hit a pair of free throws to give the WARHAWKS the lead for good and a three point basket from Chantel Burg followed by another three point play by Berg created a seven point lead.  Seven of eight free throws in the final minute sealed the win.

Five WARHAWKS hit double figure points.  Kaityn Thill and Berg led the way with 21 points apiece.  Mary Merg added 13 points, Cortney Kumerow 12 points and Jamie Swanson 11 points.  Thill, Merg and Swanson all had a team high 3 assists and Thill added 3 steals.  Berg had a team high 8 rebounds and Kumerow pulled down 6.  The WARHAWKS hit 10 of 19 three point shots and finished 56% from the floor.

IWU's Oliva Lett led all scorers with 26 points playing 36 of 40 minutes.  Lett is a really good player.  She has nice size and is very athletic.  Her spin, drop step move was nearly impossible to defend.

Huge win for the WARHAWKS.

The WARHAWKS opened play in the Holiday Inn & Suites Turkey Shootout on the Stout campus with a fourteen point, 66-52, win over Dubuque.  The lead went back and forth and there were five ties in the first eleven and half minutes before Steff Gwyn's layup put the WARHAWKS on top 15-14 and gave them a lead they would build to eleven,31-20, when the half ended and never surrender.  The WARHAWKS scored 19 points off of turnovers and outscored the Spartans 16-2 in the paint.  The Spartans cut the lead to six points twice in the second half but the WARHAWKS got it back to double digits and with one exception maintained that spread for the game's final ten minutes.

Chantel Burg led all scorers with 14 points.  Burg also had 7 rebounds and 5 steals.  Cortney Kumerow posted a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.  Kaitlyn Thill added 11 points and a game high 7 steals.  As a team the WARHAWKS had 18 steals.

The WARHAWKS will finish play in the two day tournament with a game against St. Scholastica today.

The WARHAWKS had no problem with St. Scholastica defeating the Saints 76-46.  After the score was tied 2-2 Jamie Swanson sank a three-pointer and that was as close as the Saints would get.  The WARHAWKS led by 21 at the half, 41-20, and took the lead to a high of 37 in the second half.

Kaitlyn Thill led all scorers with 15 points and the rest of her line read 4 rebounds, 5 assists and 7 steals.  Thill totaled 14 steals in the two game tournament.  Cortney Kumerow added 14 points and missed her second double-double by a single rebound pulling down a game high 9.  Mary Merg and Chantel Burg each scored 10 points and had 4 and 3 steals respectively.  As a team the WARHAWKS had 24 steals bringing their two game total to 42.  The WARHAWKS scored 32 points off of Saint turnovers.

First things first...

BW - Joe said hi to me for you... ;)  I still think you owe me a couple of trips up north, but hi right back at you... 8-)

Stout had a good weekend.

I got my first look at this very young team in actual competition.  I witnessed a number of miscues, but also saw plenty to get me excited about the future.

Saturday's game was against St. Scholastica - a team that actually led at halftime against UWEC in their season opener - before ultimately losing the game by about 10 points IIRC.

It was 14 minutes into the game before the Saints scored their first FG yesterday.  This despite the fact that Coach T was using his bench almost right from the start of the game.  Score at half was 39 - 16, with 8 of those points coming from FT's for the Saints.  Stout had 11 players contribute to their 39 points, with 16 points coming from the bench.  All but 2 players had minutes in the first half.

Final was 90 - 53, and the bench was even more in play in the second half.  The starters combined only had 21 minutes of playing time.  The bench scored 43 of the 51 second half points!

Top scorer for the Blue Devils was Sami Schoeder with 14 - hitting 4 of 7 from beyond the arc and 2 for 2 from the charity stripe.  Alexa Herasimchuk scored 10 off the bench - all in the second half.

Wasn't able to stay for today's afternoon game - but the Blue Devils pulled out the win over Mark Noll (former Stout Asst WBB coach) and his team from Dubuque.

Dubuque pulled out to an early 7 point lead at the start of the game, but Nikki Alexander (off the bench) tied the game up with the first of 2 FT's and then gave Stout the lead with the second.  Stout stretched the lead to as much as 12 points before the half ended with the score 37 - 28.

Stout maintained the lead for nearly 9 minutes of the second half, but then Aimee Reyser (sister of Stout Freshman Bethany Reyzer) hit a 3 pointer to give Dubuque a 2 point lead.  The lead would grow to 5 points before Stout tied it up with 5:51 to play on a FT by Whitney Rawdon.  Rachel Hanley's layup put Stout up by 2 with 5:01 left.  Dubuque tied it up at the 4:48 mark on a FT, but then Stout took over and did what they needed to do at the end of the game with Sami Schoeder hitting 4 of 4 FT's and Whitney Rawdon hitting 2 of 2 in the last 30 seconds.

Final score 74 - 68.  Rawdon and Schoeder led the Blue Devils in scoring with 22 and 16 respectively.  These 2 also led in rebounds with 11 and 9.

Aimee Reyser led Dubuque in scoring with 19 points.  Her sister Bethany scored 8 for Stout.  Hoping that Bethany can grow into her sister's shoes... ;D
