I look for WW to win over EC this weekend. My guess is by 12-15 points. This is a faster EC team with very good shooters and a very deep bench. EC shows promise but still is a very young team. They are strong defensively under the basket and will pick up 4-5 more steals a game then in the past 4 years. If he bus ride doesn't get to EC and if their shooting is more on the mark then the past 2 games, they could give the Warhawks a surprise. Will be interesting to see the outcome.

UW-Superior had a winning weekend--nice to see. One or two-point difference at half and then break away in the second half. Sally Linzmeier makes the team, but I think this year she has more help. Maybe a little depth. I have better feeling about this year than in any of the last twelve.

Question for you, PR: What happened to Mariah Marcol?  I just finished reading Chester Marcol's book, ALIVE AND KICKING, a very good read, and it mentioned that his daughter was coming to Superior.  I remember hearing last year or the year before that she was there and the book was released in 2011 so am wondering how long she was there and how it went for her.

By the way,  your team was very impressive in their loss here at Stout.  They got a very slow start trailing by 19, came all the way back, and then Stout made all their free throws down the stretch and won.  Both teams played well.  Fun game to broadcast.  What is your daughter doing these days?

WW looked good and played well in the win over EC. Hard to beat pressure/smart/heads up defense.   The 3 point shots in tthe second half are what really zaps an opposing team and momentum. Young EC team did not help themselves. Beyond the WW defense, EC kept shooting itself in the foot being sloppy. All said, EC is getting better. Look for an EC win at Zorn. Look for WW to take the WIAC.

WARHAWKS: 80
Eau Claire: 72

Eau Claire scored the first points of the game but the WARHAWKS tied the game on a basket from Courtney Kumerow and went ahead on a layup by Lisa Palmer.  The WARHAWKS held the lead though it never exceeded four points and included seven ties until the final second of the first half when trailing by two Eau Claire's Cady Roedl sank a 45 foot bank shot giving the BluGolds a 39-38 lead.  Kumerow's 14 points led both teams.  Eau Claire scored first in the second half and held their largest lead of the game 43-40 at the seventeen minute mark.  The two teams tied twice over the next few minutes when Abbey Reeve's three-point basket put the WARHAWKS 50-47.  Reeve's hit two more three-pointers to increase the WARHAWKS lead to seven, 53-49 after six and half minutes of play.  After that the WARHAWKS would build double figure leads (11 & 12 points).  The BluGolds would get to within three points once and four twice before the game ended with a 6-0 WARHAWKS run.

It was good game in which both teams battled back and forth with seven lead changes and ten ties. Reeve's three-pointers on consecutive possessions seemed to be the turning point.  After that the BluGolds would hang tough but each time they got close the WARHAWKS would get the basket they needed.

Reeve's fifteen points led the WARHAWKS bench to a 24-3 scoring margin which was a significant factor in the win.  The two teams played close in the paint, 30-24 WARHAWKS.  The WARHAWKS turned the ball over eight fewer times, 20-28, and had 18 steals which led to a 28-16 advantage in points off of them.  The WARHAWKS shot 19 of 21 from the free throw line.

Kumerow's 23 points and 12 rebounds were game highs.  Reeves added 15 and Palmer 10.  Kaitlyn Thill  finished with a game high 9 steals.

Leah Rempert and Courtney Lewis had 19 points apiece to lead the BluGolds.

The WARHAWKS travel to Stevens Point Wednesday.

WARHAWKS: 58
Pointers: 55

Point scored first but then went almost three minutes without another basket.  The WARHAWKS didn't get their first basket until almost two and half minutes had been played and then went on a 13-2 run to go up 15-4.  Point answered that with a 11-0 run of their own to close within a point 16-15.  The WARHAWKS answered that with another run of their own, this one 14-5, and were up ten, 30-20, with two and half minutes left in the half.  Point finished the half with four straight points and the score was 30-24 in favor of the WARHAWKS.  Neither team shot particularly well, WW: 36%, Point: 37%.  Lisa Palmer led both teams with 8 points and 5 rebounds.  Point started the second half with a 16-2 run to go up by eight, 40-32, but over the next six minutes the WARHAWKS battled back.  A fast break basket by Mary Merg tied the game and on the next possession Katie Burton sank a shot to put the WARHAWKS back on top 46-44.  The WARHAWKS built the lead up to nine points, 57-48, before Point countered and pulled to within two points, 57-55, with less than a minute to play.  Merg's free throw with three seconds left put the lead at three points and Point missed on their final possession.

Point outshot the WARHAWKS 40% to 35% and scored two more baskets overall.  However the WARHAWKS made an extra three point basket and 10 free throws to 4 by the Pointers.  Bench scoring played a role in the win as the WARHAWKS held a 30-8 advantage.

Courtney Kumerow finished with 12 points and was the only WARHAWK to score in double figures.  Kumerow and Burton led the WARHAWKS with 8 rebounds each while Palmer and Kaitlyn Thill each had 7.  Merg had a team high 3 assists.  Thill and Palmer each had a pair of steals.

Myranda Tyler led the Pointers with a game high 17 points and Sam Barber had 10 points and a game high 9 rebounds.

The WARHAWKS will travel to Holland, Michigan for a weekend tournament in which they will face Kalamazoo College Friday and the host Hope College on Saturday.

Tthe UW Superior win over EC was the first over EC  since 1987. The Yellowjacket win over SP was the first over SP since 1995. Beware WW fans, the Yellowjackets are "super" for real this year.

WARHAWKS: 101
Kalamazoo: 45

The WARHAWKS scored the first eight points of the game and took a double digit lead 17-6 in the first four minutes.  After that the lead grew to a high of twenty nine before the half ended with the lead at twenty two, 52-30.  Courtney Kumerow and Emily McCullik each scored 8 points.  Mary Merg and Kaitlyn Thill had 6 points each and Merg added 6 rebounds.  The WARHAWKS pressure defense forced 15 KC turnovers while the offense committed just 5.  The WARHAWKS opened the second half with a fifteen point run and the lead just grew from there as KC only managed a total of fifteen points in the second half.

Kumerow finished with a game high 16 points in sixteen minutes.  Abbie Reeves (12), Merg (10) and McCullik (10) also scored in double figures.  Megan Theune's 4 assists were a game high and Merg's 3 steals tied for a game high.  The WARHAWKS out boarded KC 41-28 and committed 10 turnovers to KC's 26.  Fifteen players scored.

WARHAWKS: 52
Hope: 63

Unfortunately things weren't as easy Saturday as the WARHAWKS turned the ball over 15 times, scored just 9 points and shot 17% in the first half to trail by 21 points, 30-9 against 7th ranked Hope College.  The WARHAWKS rallied in the second half whittling the lead down to single digits, 56-48, with two minutes remaining.  But forced to foul to stop the clock and Hope's 7-8 from the line down the stretch sealed their fate.  In addition to the horrid first half free throws were a significant factor.  The WARHAWKS hit 10-12 but Hope hit 23-26.

Mary Merg led the WARHAWKS with 17 points and a game high 5 assists.  Megan Theune had a team high 3 steals and added 10 points.

The weekend split leave the WARHAWKS with an 8-3 record.

The WARHAWKS JV team annilated Milwaukee Tech last night 101-40something.  The game was competitive to 12 points and after that it wasn't.  The JV team is the first to put 100 on the new scoreboards.

Superior getting some votes in this week's Top 25.  No, they aren't in the top 25 but come in at 39th.  Point and WHITEWATER are ranked 17th and 18th respectively.  River Falls is also mentioned.

WARHAWKS: 58
Millikin: 49

The WARHAWKS and the Big Blue met in what could be described as a low scoring, turnover plagued affair.  Millikin started out with an 11-4 run and held a lead until Sam Quandt's jumper put the WARHAWKS on top 18-16 with seven minutes remaining.  The two teams were tied 22-22 with two minutes left when the WARHAWKS scored the final six points and led 28-22 at the half.  Both teams shot poorly in the half finishing at 32% each.  The WARHAWKS were just 1-7 on three point attempts to Millikin's 3-4 but outscored the Big Blue 7-1 from the charity stripe.  Millikin started the second half with another run, this time 15-6, and took a 37-34 lead.  But the WARHAWKS tied the game 41-41 on Mary Merg's first of two free throws and the second gave them the lead for good.  A 17-4 WARHAWK run thereafter put the game away 58-45 with three and half minutes left.  Millikin scored the games only points after that.

The two teams combined for 57 turnovers (WW: 23, MU: 34) 33 of which (WW: 17, MU: 16) were steals.  The WARHAWKS had a 26-11 advantage in points off of turnovers.  Millikin shot 58% in the second half but WHITEWATER scored an additional basket, 21 to 20, and outscored the Big Blue 13-4 at the free throw line.

Merg led all scorers with 14 points.  Courtney Kumerow added 10 points and completed a double-double with a game high 10 rebounds.  Megan Theune's 2 assists led the team while Katie Burton's 4 steals were also a team high.

WARHAWKS will meet Millsaps today.

STOUTGUY! Long time-you know...

I'm cautiously optimistic about our women's basketball team. Sally Linzmeier doesn't like to lose and, thanks to some very nice players around her, she's been competitive--the team has been competitive. Of course, the real test comes now with the real season getting under way. I'm hoping.

Liz is in Tampa, working for FedEx. She escaped the snow and cold and won't come back, she says. Crazy, crazy, crazy. She keeps going farther south and I keep wanting to go farther north. Who can figure genetics?

I watched the Stout-UWS game via live stats while sitting through the men's game--yikes, that was awful--and rode a rollercoaster watching the point spread grow. I was practically hysterical when UWS caught up, and then morose when they lost. They're battlers. I like 'em.

Marcol. I don't know. I don't think she got much playing time last year. She had size, as I recall. It shocks me that we have a roster big enough that I don't clearly recall players. Not a luxury I'm used to up here.

WARHAWKS: 83
Millisaps: 70

The WARHAWKS opened the game with a 13-2 run and built the lead to a high of sixteen, 32-16 before Millisaps finished the half with a 12-4 run making it 36-28.  Courtney Kumerow led both teams with 11 points.  Katie Burton's basket to start the second half put the lead back into double figures and it reached fifteen before Millisaps rallied and closed to within six 47-41 with thirteen minutes to play.  The WARHAWKS would put the game away a short time later with a 23-4 spurt and maintained a double digit lead the rest of the way.

The WARHAWKS shot 53% for the game.  Kaitlyn Thill had a game high 20 points.  Burton added 16 points, Kumerow 15 points and Abbie Reeves 12 points.  Led by Thill's 8 steals the team totaled 14.  As a junior Thill moves to within 15 of the current school record of 269 career steals.  The current record is held by her sister, Trisha Thill.  The WARHAWKS out rebounded Millisaps 36-20.  Freshman Lisa Palmer's 7 led the team.  Mary Merg's 6 assists tied the game high.
