Thanks for the input you guys.  I guess I should stay at Holiday Inn Express more often.  Then I might know what I'm talking about.  :P

He just left a D2 head coaching position at Parkside.  He did a fantastic job, very impressive turnaround, and I agree that he is a very good coach.  But he isn't likely to go from DIII to DI.  So it would seem that if DI is his goal he may have been better off at Parkside.   Obviously it wouldn't be that difficult to get to a better DII program than Parkside's but I've got a feeling that he's going to be around Oshkosh for a while.

But it's been a long time since I've stayed at a Holiday Inn Express so I could be way off base.

Not saying he's leaving anytime in the immediate future but part of me doubts he'll be a lifer a la Egner.

Sam Barber was named a All American by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA). Barber is also one of three finalists for the NBCA's National Player of the Year.   Additionally Courtney Kumerow was named an honorable mention All American.  Kumerow's naming to the honorable mention list is the fourth time in the past five years that a WARHAWKS player received honorable mention recognition.  Congrats to both and the others as well.

Good luck to Sam Barber; I've been a distant admirer of hers.  But I don't think anyone but Calvin's Carissa Verkaik is getting any of those awards this year.

Sam Barber has been named the Women's Basketball Coaches Association DIII National Player of the Year.  Super honor for Sam, Point and indirectly the WIAC.

I'm not sure if there is an affliation between the WBCA and the NBCA.  It looks to be a separate organization.

BW, I think you had your alphabet soup cris-crossed in that original post.

WBCA is the women's basketball coaches association

NABC is the men's basketball coaches association

The NBCA is the collective name for all NBA head and assistant coaches, but they don't have anything to do with college basketball and don't distribute awards.

Both awards for Barber (All-American and Player of the Year), as well as the one for Kumerow, are from the WBCA. The NABC only honors men's basketball, and the WBCA only honors women's basketball.

You're right Bill, thanks for straightening it out.

I stand corrected - I thought Ms. Verkaik would sweep the awards.

Congratulations to Sam Barber!

Strong hire by UWO on its mission to return to the top of the WIAC.

Congrats to WARHAWKS assistant coach, Amy Zelinger, who is being inducted into the UW-Stout Blue Devil's Hall of Fame.  Amy was an outstanding player for the Blue Devils.

Several WIAC teams played at Just A Game today. UW Superior and a split UWW squad played to a tie and looked good. UWSP was very good in the action I saw. River falls was there too but I did not see much of them.

The WARHAWKS have released their 2013-14 schedule.  Nonconference home games include Edgewood, Illinois Wesleyan and Elmhurst.  Road games include St Mary's College, Northland/St Norberts, University of Chicago, Carthage and Ohio Northern.

The WARHAWKS women scrimmaged Marquette.  Despite it being a mismatch we made a good showing of ourselves.  The game was within 8 points with 4 1/2 minutes remaining.  Regrettably that was the last points we would score as the Golden Eagles 44-27 point advantage in the paint (size) and 27-7 advantage off the bench (depth) was too much to overcome.   The final was 78-59.  I'm told that Mary Merg and Katie Burton played exceptionally well.

Good for WIAC from an exposure stand point. Not so good for other teams looking to knock of the 'hawks. We'll see how UWSP does against UW on thursday.

Look for UW-Platteville to win a WIAC championship this year! They just got in a new freshman girl who is supposed to have some stellar talent and plays straight, no nonsense, technically sound basketball. I'm calling it!
